well bert 2.0 has put together a few of his modded exhaust pipes now ....and he is finding some new and interesting things along the way .

but for us guys, the sound out of the "k" is a beutifull thing

so far amongst our mob, there is

bert 2.0 ( bert2 special)

alby (bert2 special)

saxon 7 (bert2 special)

charlie 99 (staintune )

klompy (staintune )

two wheels better (motad )

all with a great noise coming out the rear ....not so loud as the open pipes of days gone by ....but a solid thump and crackle kinda thing ....turn heads indeed .

the performance benefits are immediatly noticeable ...and the "grin " soon follows after fitting one

onya bert ....there are a lot of smiles around this area of aussie

this prompts me to start some investigation into mixture settings and adjustments to get the best from our old girls

namely an oxygen sensor thingy to get the mixtures right,

so if anyone knows the technical (electronically and physical ) of making such a device please chime in .

im not enchouraging anybody to buy one ...unless there is some kind of cheap adaptor availabe to suit a good digital multimeter .

i was thinking of trying to develop a 2 wire ox sensor (out of a car ) and making some form of electronic output to a digitalmeter to get near a better stolich mix value by adjusting the afm etc ..

kart racers use a thing called ezy tune, i actually have one on my kart

oxy sensor from commodore ( all had to do was drill hole in exhaust and weld on nut)

it comes with leds that change from orange (to rich) to green (right )to red (to lean )i will have a look later and if i get this computer fixed post pics

I haven't owned my K long enough to want to change anything, except the exhaust, which I think is ugly and just a little too quiet. I don't want it obnoxiously loud but would enjoy a little "thump". I just haven't been able to find any good links for aftermarket mufflers. Where do you guys find yours and do I need to consider fabrication of a 4 into 1 adapter. Sorry if this is a little off topic.

Awww Charlie such nice things you say. Mate i just can't leave anything standard, even the mower gets worried.

Its a piece of cake to put the O2 sensor on the pipes. Could be done on the bike, all you need do is drill a 20 mm hole and tig weld an 18mm x 2(i think its a 2mm pitch) nut on and O2 sensor screws straight in. All you need do is get an 18mm set bolt(the thread goes all the way up to the head) to screw in the hole when o2 is not in use.

Then we can check the stoichometric values of the tune. Cant wait for someone to get one of these tuney thingos happening(charlie, alby? resident electro boffins)

Wngnut i think someone on here somewhere has made an adaptor for their bike, just cant remember who.

yeah kinda along the thinking bert but

im thinking portable ...not just for gerty or any one in particular ...

from what i have read

1> they need to get to about 600 degrees to work properly

2> the output varies from about .1 volt (100 milli volts ) up to about 1 volt

3> i need some kind of "calibrated" meter

so my thinking is along the lines of a temperature controlled heater ( i got just the idea ...out of a temp controlled soldering iron )

some meter mechanism ....thinking a real cheap digital meter a bit of a power supply to run the electronics ...i guess a 5 volt reg and a pull up resistor

a sampler tube to project down the throat of whatever zorst were testing which fitts up to the ox sensor and heater ...and an air sucker pump that draws the exhaust gasses up to the sensor along the tube

so i guess the sensor would need to be made fit the sampler tube ...with heater inside ..(probably wrapt around the ox sensor) and a bleed tube off that to suck up the sample ....

would all have to be welded up though ....so i fail there unless i can make it in a little cabinet and isolate the heater etc in some small sealed enclosure

hey col i like that idea ...i have seen some projects in jaycar that are verry similar ....in fact i might go revisit that idea soonish ...

but im looking for a absolute value ...not a good - bad - bad solution , im hopeing we can get enough accuracy to measure down to .25 % increments .....my thoughts with the digital meter was to run up a truth table in comparison with a real working high tollerance unit ....like the guys that fitt gass conversions to cars ....but some of them do parts per million stuff ...so id have to learn the jargon and the meanings first i guess

my hopefull end result is that we can all acheive a nice brown output rather than the typical black sooty end cap ...from too much unburnt fuel through the motor

well is worth a thought i guess

that guy who modded the k in holland did a collector bert you know the one that had the cut up rs fairing in white and all the straight lines front to back

but the "equall length " header pipes is an interesting idea also .. i think that is motad also ....whether still in production is another mystery

Good thinking Charlie, when i was working at a place that had a dyno we had a tube that went up the tailpipe that monitored exhaust gas. It had a five wire O2 sensor attached to it which in turn connected to a laptop. The five wire sensors already have a heater built into them as do the four wire ones I think.

Very often we would go for a drive around the streets with the snoofle(thats what we called it) attached to the exhaust and hooked to a laptop. Worked really well. Now it was a Dyno Dynamics dyno but I'm sure you could do it without that specific tuning software. The snoofle is easy to build.

I am guessing that one of you guys who knows their way around a computer program or two could figure this out.

Now all I need to build is a set of rollers that we can strap the bikes to. Hmmm another project I feel.

Oh could Inge or someone tell what an exhaust came off from a part number. Its Gillet 3887 18121454918. Thats the number off the ones I got from Saxon, with the very open chambers. I seem to have misplaced my end cap so cant compare the numbers. Maybe Alby could check his to see what the different part no is.

Oh by the way Col yours is nearly done too.

yeah your right there bert

but the 4 wire types are what they call narrow band sensors .... but maybe just the job for this cause /

ill invesigate that further ......but will keep an eye on cost ...

i guess ill need to builld an a to d converter etc for the puter huh ?

I can use my contacts to get a sensor when needed. We used to use General Bearings as they are a Bosch dealer and also sell their own brands of Injectors and associated parts and are reasonably priced too. Always good to know.

When I used to drag race we attached thermocouples and this allowed a very accurate indication of fuel mixture and total performance.

Heat is horsepower they say....until of course when too lean and then its just cost.

But this method made tuning at any rev reading very easy..

...still trying to figure out the Supertrapp exhaust literature that I got along with the bike is about.

Was told that it had one of these on it. Can't see anything special down there.

Is quiet when at 3-4 k rpm....bike just whirrs and chirps happily along.

Twist of the wrist above that and it honks loudly when into it and downshifting .. Gets attention.

Folks want to know WTF?

Me too. Very Happy ...but wasn't going to share that with them.

hmm whats that all about klompy ?

i guess in drag racing your trying to get as much fuel through the system in the shortest time possible ....after all its just a pump of sorts ...just have to make it burn well under those circumstances ...no ?

im going the other way ....well of sorts ...to find the best blend of fuel versus economy , concidering what we have planned , more flow , the zorst is just the output, im intending of getting rid of the 9 direction changes through the inlet manifold path and i dont think the metering will be correct for those mods ...call it a less restricted pump ? this could change the torque characteristics somewhat, but im guesing the high mass revolving round will keep it all mooving in the right direction ...well see... its easy to step backwards if it all goes to brown goo . should have a keen induction noise as well ....grin

Every turn is worth a specific pressure drop (certainly in exhaust technology)....theoretically if you have enough turns in a pipe, you wont get any pressure out the other end.

I do believe that the lengths and diameters of primary and secondary exhaust extractors/headers have a marked effect on where power is delivered, and also if there is no back pressure there is less efficient burn.

Sounds a like a fun experiment at the induction side but remember that if its all smooth, and straight you may not get the turbulence needed to get the mixture atomised for efficiency.

Cheers JK

It really looks like an original muffler.
I am planning to first clean my workshop (put the tools back in the tool box) and will start to dismantle. I had to work in my driveway to detach the chair and it was quite cold. When the bike was finally in, people were frozzen and I had to feed them with..... cold beer. All the tools are scattered over the floor.
I will see if the exhaust was modified or if I can find a part #.

Did that when i first got my K. You need a piece of solid steel bar with a sharp end or a really long screwdriver to punch the centre of the diffuser out. I have put up a pic of the diffuser out of the Zorst.

zorsts ---- old boys and young mans toys ? 2012-090

You can see where I had originally punched the centre out, you have to work around a bit but you can get a decent hole happening. Check your progress with a torch. It does make a slight difference in sound and a bit more go.

CF I know there is a family rumour that we may be of Canadian decent but I promise I've never been anywhere near your Zorst. Might pay to check up the zorst hole with a torch to see if someone has modified it. The part number is stamped on the tail section too.

I road tested Col's zorst yesterday to see how it went. Seems the goods to me,ready for you anytime Col. Went over to the BM shop for a squiz and then went and visited Beano. He has a great shed setup there complete with fridge for cold beveridges and such like(I only had a ginger beer i promise) Thanks again Beano.

On the way home down the freeway the traffic was at a standstill going the other way, and there were the boys in blue booking bike riders for lane splitting(although it could've been for riding down the outside). Don't really see what this achieves to be honest.

you could probably create that hole neatly with a holesaw ( metal cutting type ) on an extension bar .

but i wouldnt gamble on the cutout section holding inside the saw blade often ... probably best to drill it whilst in a vice and verically from the bottom so it falls cleanly out the tailpipe

oh cool bert !....we havent seen beano for ages

Good thinking Charlie, i would use a fine tooth one if you were going to do it that way. You can get extension bits that suit spade drills that work fine with hole saws. Would depend on what type of exhaust you have, wether it is the 28mm bore or 40mm bore. But its still the inner tube that needs to go completely.

Beano was dissapointed to miss the Bingara run too, he is busy doing his brake lines and steeering head bearings.

We both came to the conclusion that if it wasn't for this forum we probably wouldn't have kept our K's, its been a boon of advice and help. Cheers to you all.

This is the best Kudos that both of you can give to all the passionate members of this forum.

Cheers,

My last K100 solo had a Luftmeister 4-1 system (black ceramic coated, tuned length collector) before fitting the sidecar, it wouldn't fit with the sidecar subframe so had to go. I bought it from Don Wilson Motorcycles
Sounded amazing and gave a good performance boost.

Yes some do look tight can get your elbow down though, our country roads are also used by the farmers with slow moving vehicles, one could let rip if you know the road well.
