Following on from an excellent day on Saturday with some great new faces there was a little discussion on a trip up north. Unfortunately Comberjohn didn't make it along on the day but he did send along the excellent weather.

We couldn't do a trip up north without him. Hopefully Mark will be able to make it and GMcQ will be back recovered.

For those of us who were not there last year John organised a breakfast meet at Café Chimes in Hillsborough and a 200 mile route that took us around Antrim, Torr head and Giant's Causeway. The days run was very interesting and we finished up back at Hillsborough at 7pm.

Those of us camping at Tollymore headed to Newcastle and Belfast on Sunday morning for Titanic Experience getting back to Dublin in time to miss the match traffic.

Over to you John, hopefully some dates in September might work for you.....no matter what date it is unfortunately it wont suit everyone so maybe pop up whatever works for you and we can work from there. The baker will work any time....

If I have enough notice, I might be able to arrange 2 days off (in plain English I'd love to but work allocation has been a nightmare recently). I'll keep an eye open for it anyway.

A good sense of humour and of course very welcome.....and no the Hondas do not need to be parked 'around the corner' as they were in Stradbally when we went counting bikes and found two 'missing'.
 
Anyway that would be a good start for a trip north so as one would say we are go again. Most weekends in September are good for me, so we can start with Comberjohn and see how his dates work.
 
Due to distance us guys from outside Dublin will probably head up Friday for B&B or camping as case may be. Bjorn found an excellent B&B so anybody looking for that option....talk to Bjorn.
 
It is feasible to head up from Dublin on Saturday morning and back same evening.

I might be able to make it, depending on the dates.

I am just back from a holiday in Belfast (when ye were gallivanting around the country on the bikes), on four wheels.  The Titanic experience is well worth it, spent 4 hours there. Also went up to Bushmills, the Giants Causeway and the rope bridge, so I may go separate from the group  for those. but don't worry, if the weather is good, the roads are just calling out for bikes.  I couldn't get over how they manage to keep the country roads in such good condition in Norn Iron, and as soon as you cross the border back to the republic, they descend into shite again.

OK. Depression from missing Saturday's run starting to lift now.
Think we need to call it for either Saturday the 7th or 14th of September. Even in God's country, we might be pushing our luck leaving it any later than that. Although, it was the end of September last year and the weather was great.
So, can we have a show of hands for these two dates and any feedback on areas that some people might like to visit such as Fintan's ideas. Nothing to stop us heading up the Antrim coast again with a few variations on the theme.
Campers can still take in the Mourne drive, it doesn't take as long and would be a bit more for scenery rather than scratching.
This is the 12th, so lets get the ideas flowing.

Depression is well cured by a K!

As things stand I am good with either date so will fall in with whatever suits everyone else. A plus point is that if we go for one of those dates and the weather plays foul we can get a reschedule.......

I am happy to fall in on the route too. Glad to see Fintan got to some of our route.

I am going to stay over Friday night...we might make a better run of a Friday meet up this time [bread in the oven John!!]

On quite a serious note Mourne Drive and the peninsula are worth it too but lets see what the weather brings.

We hopefully may be 4 or 5 from Cork for this so I will check what accommodation arrangements might be preferred. [Cluainsi, Pat O'D, Corkboy, Bjorn, Olaf].

If dates work out fine, it shall definitely be Friday evening for me - no point starting a tour at 04:00 on a Saturday morning to be up on time Smile. A nice barbecue would be great if weather permits. Once you come to a decision about the date I start sharpening my battle axe (that's for asking for the weekend off).

After a really enjoyable run on last Saturday (thanks guys for organising) I would also really like to do this one in September but I am busy on the 14th (I have decided to go to Rome for the K 30th meeting Very Happy ), so for me the 7th is the only option. I have free accommodation with my parents in Ardglass so going up on the Friday is good for me.

I must confess to a hankering after the Rome trip too. My brother is in Split for September and a plan was hatched for a K run. But it hasnt quite worked out timewise just now. Easier for me to go on a Friday and arrive back on a Tuesday but that doesn't work for the Rome trip. Leave Fri I arrive Mon evening, leave Sat am and arrive back Mon. Nice run but playing it by ear.

Won't miss the trip up north.

Seems that settles Friday night activities too....weather permitting. I would aim for early afternoon........

How about his to see what suits everyone...I know we cant all make it but see how many we can get. Comberjohn made some good route suggestions.....I for one am quite happy to go with whatever results. Not sure if anyone is going to stay over for Sunday? Newcastle on a sunny Sunday morning is rather nice.

Tom Foley mentioned another campsite too which hosted the Adventure Bike Riders event in May.

Early chat suggests that we might have 5 from Cork/Limerick [Pat O'D, Cluansi, Corkboy, Bjorn, 92KK] ......if we travel up somewhat organised maybe meet up with Tom Foley en route. 88KE has accommodation on route already [?], Ringfad also sorted. I would love to head away early enough on Friday to arrive not much after 5pm to get set up and maybe organise some BBQ but lets see what we can do.

I will amend this post with any updates.

I am more interested in B&B'ing it than camping (I like my comforts), and can hook up with whoever closer to the day (Bjorn?).

Comberjohn has some excellent B&B recommendations and I also know Tom Foley's recommendation has some B&B and solid bed accommodation as in hostel style. That could work out if camping and B&B is sort of together. I have a feeling Bjorn also prefers the B&B option.

http://www.meelmorelodge.com Maybe use the hostel or split the Wee House between 4 of us for 2 nights? Space for BBQ and things if we wanted and not entirely weather dependent.....

Can see what happens timewise, it may be that none of us get away too early or we end up in two groups. M8 M50 M1 to Newry and then about 40 minutes east on some rather nice roads.

Cork Dunkettle to M50/M1 interchange about 2 1/2 hours allowing a fuel stop ...Newry about 1 hour from there allowing toll and fuel stop near Dundalk. Total about 4 1/4 hours.

The Meelmore lodge looks perfect. And has both beds and camping. It gets my vote.

Myself and Irene drove from Carrigaline to Belfast in 5 hours. It's motorway all the way and we just sat at 120kph.  OK, it took 6 hours as we stopped for an hour in the Avoca shop (not my idea Rolling Eyes  ). So 4/ 1/4 hours to Newbridge should be about right.

Nice to be credited with a great weekend but in truth Will did the work in organising the route. I am sure took many years of painful research checking out suitable coffee houses, bakeries and hostelries [hostelries for those who, ahem, left at Newbridge].

The success of it was that so many of us made it and as usual had a good time.

Tom Foley mentioned another campsite too which hosted the Adventure Bike Riders event in May.

Early chat suggests that we might have 5 from Cork/Limerick [Pat O'D, Cluansi, Corkboy, Bjorn, 92KK] ......if we travel up somewhat organised maybe meet up with Tom Foley en route. 88KE has accommodation on route already [?], Ringfad also sorted. I would love to head away early enough on Friday to arrive not much after 5pm to get set up and maybe organise some BBQ but lets see what we can do.

I will amend this post with any updates.

Sorry for not joining in on this discussion to date. I am not sure if I will make it or not this time. Keep me as a possible for either date and I will let you know nearer the time. B&B or Hostel for me only, I'm afraid I like my creature comforts too much.

Will you will be very much missed. Hopefully that might change a little. Can  how we work out. Question is still do we go 7th or 14th! I am still open to either.

Got new fuel hoses and cutch cable today so must fit these and finish the service now I can take the fuel tank off and also fit the new tyres I have.

I m free to travel early enough on the Friday 6 or 13th and link up with anyone on the way. if possible leave Cork by 1pm and miss the evening traffic on the M1!!

While I can go either weekend, the 14th is now preferable as i am away all week prior to the 7th.

It seems to be tipping more for the 14th, with me, twohondas and sgmayhew preferring it.  88KE did prefer the 4th but cannot now go either date.

The only one that can make the 7th but not the 14th is Ringfad (sorry Steve Sad  )

I will be sad to miss this run to my home country but seeing as I will be in Italy that weekend I am not that sad Smile .

By the way I met Electric monk yesterday, he is getting his K repaired and his GS is also off the road but he hopes to be back on the road soon.

I'm okay for either date but it looks like the 14th is going to be the top pick.
Shall we call it for the 14th then?
A friend of mine with a VFR800 is going to try to make it, too. We're not proud, we'll take anyone.
Been a bit preoccupied lately with a drawn out house clearance following a recent bereavement. Had a nice couple of hundred miles up the Antrim coast today and more in the form for it now.
Nothing like it for clearing the head. Better than drugs! Not that I would know anything about that anyway.
I've ordered the weather for that day, just need any thoughts about what areas we would like to cover.
I'm starting to think of a few ideas but would welcome any other input.

I like 14th, gives me time to get my fuel tank off so I can get the fuel pipes, coolant expansion pipe, coolant, spark plugs and air filter sorted and also to fit a new clutch cable, new tyres, rear brake pads heat shield if I can manage it. All little things but make a difference to confidence. Its just time as I have all the bits.

Be great to see Electric Monk back ok a K!!! So what's up with his K?

Comberjohn had a plan last time for continuing on past Giants Causeway toward Portstewart and home on a more inland route. Maybe start off that way this time? I don't mind, last route was so good I would happily do it again!

Do we still go for Cafe Chimes? I was thinking too if we are settled on 14th should we look at The Wee House at Meelmore? I didnt see very many of us needing it. I prefer camping but the Wee House would be good too.

Electric Monk has a broken shaft, but parts are coming.

I've just booked the groupon deal. It works out at €50 per head (€99 for two), for the two nights and breakfasts.

Groupon code arrived so hotel booked for Friday and Saturday.

They seem to be on top of things - email confirmation will be sent out.

Glad to tell you that my hospital appointment is not until the 20th Sept so

Corkboy and myself were hoping to leave earlyish as he is taking half day off work aiming to finish I think 12.30. The Cashel meeting point is excellent. I have phone number for you and Corkboy [Fintan] so we can make arrangement].

Depending on times option of lunch at Mayfield Services Monasteravan J14M8....Tom Foley is also down on list and if all is ok with him we can make a lunch stop a little further up after M9 intersection.

Bjorn wont know his arrangements until after the weekend.

Have been in communication with Olaf and have put together a couple of route plans for our day out. Anybody have any thoughts on these two plans? Any other ideas would be welcome too. Nothing carved in stone.


First one is starting at the square in Hillsborough. Those who haven't had breakfast can get some or a cuppa for those who are staying in B&B's. 
If we leave sharp we can head up through Dundrod along part of the UGP course, Antrim, Randalstown, Portglenone and a stop in Ballymoney at the Joey Dunlop Memorial and Joey's pub for pics. Up to the Dark Hedges and then, depending on time, either Bushmills(Distillery?) or Ballycastle and back down the Antrim coast road(avoiding Torr Head if we are running out of time. Its a nice run over the top as well).
I'm conscious of the distance for those who are only coming up for the day. I reckon its about 180 miles but a nice drive.

Plan B would be to all meet up in Warrenpoint and a route up through the Mournes, up through Downpatrick, Newtownards and down the Ards Peninsula to Strangford. Across the ferry to Strangford and then a slower road down the coast, Ardglass, Coney Island and down to Newcastle where we can break up.
Nice scenic roads and a few nice places to stop for lunch and/or coffee.
Probably nearer 100 miles in total. More suitable for the older gentlemen?!

Enjoy your weekend, I always wanted to drop in to Joey's pub so will miss that if you do it. Coney Island is where my parents live so will miss that if take plan B but all being well I will be in Rome ....
