Greetings from Nottingham.
After being away from motorcycling for the last 13 years I recently purchased a 1988 K100lt off e-bay for a little under a Grand (my last bike was a K75rt which I used for dispatch riding).
Took it out for a first ride and I'd honestly thought I had lost the Knack of riding. I used it to commute to work for the first week and I was having serious doubts about my purchase and my abbilities. The handling was to say the least a little scary. I came to realise I had a slow puncture on both front and rear tires.
As soon as a new set of boots was fitted I fell in love with my new machine and am now very proud to be part of the Flying Brick family once again.
Once again, Thanks for having me. I know the information and knowledge you guys have between you will help me out no end. (1st thing I'v learnt from this forum was that my panniers DO actualy have locks fitted... under the little flaps)

Welcome Englishkent, are you a Sheriff by any chance?. Once you get the tyres and fork oils right they are a treat to ride. Good to have you aboard.

I work along side the Sheriff as it happens, in Nottinghams Shire Hall and County Gaol. Well worth a visit for all you Aussies if you're ever in town as we tell the story of Transportation to the Colony.

If you see a blue K100LT in Meadow Lane, Trentbridge area that's me. Pleased to help in any practical way, manual, tools, where to get tyres. paint MOT etc. let me know.

Hi Englishkent, your situation virtually mirrors mine; I too was away from riding for many years and returned earlier this year via a £950 ebay K100LT.  I used to ride a K75RT at work, but that was a Police bike.  Just about the only difference is that I didn't have a couple of slow punctures.  A K100LT is exactly the correct motorcycle to ride at this time of year; that big old barn door of a fairing will keep the worst of the weather off you, and that motor will provide a warming draught.  I found mine was a bit too warm during the height of summer when wearing the right clothing, but it was so good to back on two wheels.

Many thanks for the offer. I may just take you up on it if I run into any problems. Do you recommend any local bike shops for parts and servicing? Since I was last a biker, bike shops have become a little thin on the ground. I got my tires from CMC in Daybrook but was disappointed they didn't change the valves (still have slow puncture on front) I'm up the hill in Mapperley riding a bahama bronze (beige) 100lt into town every morning. I'll keep my eyes out for a blue one.

I'm definitely getting back into the swing of two wheels. You're right, the barn door does its job perfectly. You only need to raise your head above the screen to feel what a fantastic job it does, especially now the mornings are getting a bit cooler.

I use the main BMW motorcycle dealer - Pidocks in Long Eaton for small items - oil and air filter, battery, (they do a non BMW one for a reasonable sum as well as the BMW one) rubber grommets, bolts, washers, front fork oil etc. - as these items do not break the bank and they can get the right item. The service department is helpful - you sometimes have to guide them to the right diagrams on their system as the K's are now in the "classic" section not the main section.

Major items it is on to ebay as I do not believe in new items for a 22 year old bike.

Oil is Castrol 10-40 Magnatec (Semi synthetic) - usually from ASDA when it is on offer. A periodic run with injector cleaner in the tank seems to keep that part sweet.

Front light bulb - Halfords super brilliance transforms the light output and is the same wattage as the original.

For tyres and MOT I use M.T.S. (Motorcycle Tyre Services), Unit4 Litttle Tennis Street, Nottingham NG2 4EW 0115 941 3333. The man who runs it and does the work, while you wait, is a joy to watch as he is very methodical and inspires confidence.

Servicing I do myself as I am now a pensioner and have the time. My secret is that I use a torque wrench for tightening everything and it all seems to go together without leaks, breakages, and is easy to undo when you next have to remove something.
