Hello all,
I've been wanting to scratch the itch for another bike for a while.  I was thinking about a dual sport, but I found a brick for a "can't pass it up" price.

My new toy is a 1987 K100LT.  It has some cosmetic needs, having been down a time or two, but it is mostly complete and has had decent maintenance.  When I bought it, the bike had a slight oil leak from the 2" hole in the cam cover created when the seller had dropped the bike mid-corner minutes after having new tires mounted...  I found a replacement cover on ebay and ordered a gasket from Max.

After fitting the cam cover and filling it with fresh oil, I got it fired up and put a few miles on it to see how it ran and what else might need attention.  It's got a bit of an off-idle stumble, so I pulled off the airbox and throttle bodies to check for air leaks.  The throttle boots are good, but the injector seals are like plastic.  Also, the crank case vent hose is rotted.  And the cooling fan was seized.

A friend gave me a good cooling fan motor, so that's done.  I have couple boxes of Bosch injector seals left over from other projects.  The vent hose will get ordered from Max along with brake hoses and some other odds and ends.

Here's how it looks as of a few days ago...

Greetings TS888 welcome to the forum. Great to have another brick along for the ride.
Sounds like you have found a few of the common issues, if you go to the portal page and check out the thread "so you just got a BMW K what now" there is a heap of good info and what may need attention when you get a 25 Year old brick

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you are on top of things with the LT.

Everyone here is very helpful and lots of technical knowledge.

If you add in your Bike model and VIN to your signature it makes it easier to identify specific parts and issues.

Hmm.. just a stone's throw away from Wind River Road and Windy Ridge.  Lucky you.

You might want to consider getting your FI's reconditioned: http://home.comcast.net/~smithduck/bmw/13tech/fis/fis.htm

For what BMW charges you might want to consider getting some braided stainless brake lines.  Or do what I do and get rid of that stupid system that goes through the steering head:  http://home.comcast.net/~smithduck/bmw/13tech/2vbrakes/2vbrakes.htm

Welcome ts888.  You may want to consider contacting Two Wheels Better on this forum.  He is a parts mangler at one of the Seattle Bimmer shops - and now I don't remember which one.  You can PM him on this forum, and he can source parts quickly, and ship if required.  He sends my stuff to Sumas WA and I slip across the border from the North and pick up.

Hallo GTJos,
I am not sure why you cannot see the picture.  I linked it, so maybe it has some permissions?  I'll try to upload a picture.

I have spent much time in Netherlands.  I used to work for Nike, so I have been to Amsterdam and Hilversum may times, and also to Zandaam, Zandvoort, Aalkmaar, Den Haag, Utrech, and all along the A2 down to Maastrich.  It is a beautiful country, and het bier is goed!

OMG. There are so many new members on the board today I can't possibly greet them all. So, to you, and everyone else new to the board, welcome to the club.

Rode a good deal in the Pac NW. My fav is Olympic Pennsula and the High Desert in Oregon around the Columbia River basin.

I'm now in the Atlantic NE, what they call here, New England. I don't know why they call it New England, with all the snow and cold we get it feels more like New Finland IMO.  santa

But, the long winters are great for bike clean-up, maintenance, and (my favorite) modifications. Always a new bike coming out of the shop every year.

Enjoy the ride!

Welcome too.

New England has place names from over here. From Rochester to New York to Birmingham to New London and much more. All history.

But we get all year round riding and only occasional non K days! Means you need two Ks!

Hi Jamie and welcome too. If you go to the home page there is a section on what to do when you buy a K.

As everything ages a few well known trouble spots appear. The K is no different except that they seem to be much fewer in number. This forum will help to identify and sort them, learning enough to prevent them. Everyone is very helpful and there is a great friendship around.

Despite the age of the Ks you will see very few stories of us being stranded or broken down. My RT is 30 years old and I would quite happily ride it on 2000 mile trip and expect it to be trouble free.

In time you should expect the K1100 to get a bit lonely, it will be pining for a mate....

Pedants warning!

A common misperception from those abroad...and from many Americans too...the six New England states of the US are comprised of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massatucky, Connecticut and Rhode Island. New York state, home of Rochester and NYC, isn't one of them, though it's as picturesque, especially in the 'Fall'. Granted, New London is in Connecticut and Cow Hampshire contains a Rochester.

You are of course correct in that. But the names all come from the same source, English and Scottish and even some Welsh names of cities in the homeland. The 'New England' designation came later. Sure you even have Newport..........there are very few places over here that do not have matching names over your way. But some of the names come from further back, like Chester, comes from the Roman/Latin word for castle, so you have connections with Rome too.

Hi Jamie welcome to the Knuthaus. Red 1993 K1100s are the perfect bike but I am biased.
You need to come to the Kuruah River Rally on 7, 8, &9th Feb and meet many of the guys. Its only a couple of hours ride for you.

Hi Jamie

,89 k100lt owner myself but now itsa k100l . . .c . . lol

Welcome to this amazing forum

Ive found the K100 very hard to go past in terms of traits and attributes. My ride never ceases to thrill or amaze me, unless I want to go faster than 215 k's, which is very seldom :-))
