A bit of a tidy up. Sam_1010

Over the past couple of years I've been collecting and repainting parts with the intention of tidying up my solo.

I needed a new front BT45 so I had one fitted to my newly painted (at enormous expense) wheel. I was planning the refurb for sometime in May, when my wife will be in America. I can then move my steam engine, bicycle and a few other big items out of my workshop and into the lounge, thereby freeing up some space to work on the solo indoors. 

So, I took the old wheel out and then thought 'I might as well change the fork legs for the re-painted ones'. Well, without the front wheel in place I could feel the head bearings, what a shocker, rough as old boots!  affraid

Then the fork yokes came off, but not without a fight. The top nut just wouldn't move, even with the chamfer on my 30mm socket turned off to get a good purchase on the nut and my impact wrench with a big hammer. I resorted to carefully cutting through the nut to release the tension.

Fortunately I had already made a new stainless top nut.

Once I had got to the head bearing, I did the finger nail check on the inner race and, to my surprise, it was smooth as silk. The roughness was just hardened grease, so a good washing of the bearings and re-greasing solved that little hick-up.

Having had the bearing adjustment ring off, I'm trying a 'solo' version of my sidecar steering damper. Instead of using 'O' ring rubber, I'm trying 5mm expanded neoprene. As well as giving a bit of friction damping, it will also act as a seal, keeping water out of the bearing.

So far it feels good, but I'll have to wait until a road test to decide if it's really worth doing.

Newly painted handlebars, levers and housings, top yoke, new bar rubbers and fairing boots, new heated grips and brake lines and a lot more to go yet.

I need to repaint my wheels. I decided at the recent tyre change to swap the wheels off the LT only to discover the rear wheel has a big dent in it from when it was rear ended. It has 2 otherwise perfect wheels. Now do I look for 2 good wheels or repaint the cosmetically poor ones I already have on my spares bike so that I am not off road...Decisions and runaway jobs.

Have a go at knocking the dent out Olaf the BMW wheels are fairly soft. I have done a few and use a piece of soft wood and a 16oz hammer and usually a few solid hits removes most of a dent. Most of the Japanese alloy rims and wheels are very tough and need to be rolled in a machine to get them true.

It's a quarter scale Royal Chester, which was the last traction engine built by the Allchin company in Northampton.

Today I pulled the front calipers apart to find corrosion on three of the pistons.

They've never leaked, but, once you know the corrosion is there you have to replace them; new pistons and seals are on their way to me as I type!

The good bit is that, after seeing Bemade's gold calipers, I fancied having blue calipers on the blue bike, so they are growing happily in the workshop at the moment.  :geek:   Upol Acid 8 etch primer.

I don't really need the solo K at the moment, I have the K outfit and Vincent to ride, but I hate not having it available so I'll be glad when all the bits come together and it's back in one piece again.

The calipers are now painted and re-assembled with their new pistons and seals; looking very blue!  Cool

I'm just waiting for some brake line fittings from 'Up the shop' before determining the length of the brake lines, as I'm planning on doing away with the short metal pipe at the bottom end.

Also did a little mod to the handlebar pad bracket today to make it easier to locate.

Those slots, normally plain 6mm holes, mean that the screws can be fitted to the top yoke and the pad bracket simply slots over the screws before tightening them. Should make life easier.

Reminds me of an old work colleague who complained bitterly the he only went out with his missus to buy a toaster and ended up with a £6k kitchen because the toaster didn't match the old one! Ah the great Domino Topple! Very Happy

scp still has the talent to amaze us all ....for him no biggie with the machining ...but I do suspect he is taking on new ideas  ...all the time
appears to me he has not finished the learning at all ...and could teach us lot, a thing or three

now here's the plan  ...just have to convince him to draw up  a mating of the crankcases with 2 heads from the one crank ...somehow ...to make an "ultimate 8 cylinder beast "  even a 6 cylinder (2 x k75 ) would be quite nice yes ????...giggles

Or someone we know well went out with his wife to buy a kitchen and the free toaster that came with it turned out to be a brick a kitchen guy was wanting to dispose of. One with four holes cylinders. Memo to wife: If you want a red toaster write 'red toaster', not 'RT'. It didn't get sent back...wives like that are scarce. He took us up to Sally Gap on Saturday and was beaming afterwards.

I guess you also struggle to align the bolts and holes, eh BlaKey?
 (It's only taken me 30 years to think of a solution)

Well, the tent is now dry and ready to get wet again on Friday  A bit of a tidy up. 178468 but I have done a bit more work on the solo.

 The brake line fittings eventually arrived after the first ones got lost in the post, so I've now been able to order the brake lines themselves, having determined the required length. In the meantime, I made a new stainless steel banjo bolt for the top of the steering head.
 I like to put a bleed screw on the top because the lengthway drilling usually goes past the cross drilling and when the banjo is fitted vertically, a little bubble of air gets trapped there. (Who said I was fussy? A bit of a tidy up. 167893 )

 Shame all this 'bling' gets hidden under the dash pad.

Having fitted some new heated grips, I thought I'd better see if they work. So, ignition on, voltmeter showing 12.4, umm suspicious, heated grips on and voltage starts to drop 12...11.8....11.4. Ah well, better order a new battery.  Sad

I've just replaced the 8 year old Varta on the outfit with a Motobatt, so another should arrive tomorrow for the solo.

Now, a bright YELLOW battery might suit Rickmeister and one or two others but not for me on a white or blue bike. Fortunately, when 88KE was using some vehicle wrapping film on his K, I bought some to play with. So now I can convert a Motobatt to BLACK so that it blends in with the other black bits.  cheers

I like that bleed device a lot

so handy that you can put into application, some very sensible ideas .....(could market this device but the risk is too high that some weirdo would forget to retighten the bleed bolt )

It's been primed and the first top coat is drying as I type. Brush painting a frame in situ is painful, 
I bet Inge has a brush that paints round the back of the tubes.  lol!

And, while it's all apart, what better time to replace the alternator 'monkey-nuts' and brushes? It's only a bit more work!

At least the front end is now all pristine and stainless.

Now I feel guilty but I decided I was not going to strip mine to paint it. The frame needs painting at the rear and I tested brush painting last year where the battery had leaked acid and destroyed the paint. It has held up well using a glass black industrial paint for marine applications so am going to go at it during the summer. Warm weather and warmed paint actually works very well for a good finish, admittedly with a brush. It might not be your standards Paul but it will offer corrosion protection which is what I really want.

You do realise now you will have to take the K for a good burnout to get the headers to a matching blue......

I have some Sadolins Ducksback in Forest Oak colour that might prove useful to bring the backdrop to suitable colour contrast.....

Try these brushes for the back of the frame....

Many years back when I spent my childhood making models and we used bucket loads of Humbrol enamel paints we had very small artist brushes we made into angled brushes for the difficult bits. Especially useful if you hadn't painted some awkward part before assembly. We also found those brushes very good for touch up and for painting racks, carriers and fittings.

On a serious note, we all know how meticulously you look after your machines SCP. I am therefore encouraged to see your rear frame is as scabby as the rest once stripped. It's amazing that they get so bad but also a testament to the build quality that it never seems to be more than surface rust.

Keep posting pics of the RS - I can get enough of it. I just love that paint job!

That has really made me smile. Its great paint too......But how to heat it up a little to bake it. I cant see you getting the K into the oven but if my mother were around she would describe issues over us 'borrowing hair driers for industrial purposes'.

Last week, when I removed the alternator regulator and brushes, I thought that the brushes looked OK, but they did seem a bit wobbly in their sockets.

Today the new assembly arrived and it was obvious that the old brushes were well past their sell-by date........still working though, so not bad for 30 year's use.

So the alternator is now re-fitted complete with new monkey nuts and I've made some new fittings to hold the 'too tall' Motobatt battery.
It's ever so easy to fit the battery without the mudguard in place, you know!

Now I'm just waiting for some new BSA Bantam fork gaitors to arrive to replace the worn out one on my rear shock. With the shock back in place, I'll then be able to move the bike out into the surprisingly unusual April sunshine sunny  to continue 'just replacing the front tyre'. (o)

Wonderful story and pictures. Doesn’t the rear frame looks spindly without all the plastic bits around it? If the rear end looks anything like the front-end it’s going to look brilliant.
 
 
I have Wasp wheels which are bare metal from new and although they are not bad condition, I am debating powder coating them. It’s just that it’s going to cost me about 80 quid for the two along with all the rest of the paint and what I’m doing, and wondering whether to leave it for another day.
 
It also means that the outfit (which is currently a solo but on wasp forks) will be on blocks for a few weeks, although I guess I could put the original wheels back in temporarily
 
What I should have done really is to powder coat the wheels before I started stripping the bike to convert it to an outfit.
 
I do love reading other people’s posts.

Hi James, when I bought my Wasp wheels I had them anodised before I used them, although I've subsequently painted the centres, the rims have never suffered the severe corrosion that you would expect in 27 years.

 80 quid sounds very cheap compared to what I paid Dream Machine to paint my solo wheels.  A bit of a tidy up. 76715

I discovered when it comes to painting there is a big set up cost in minimum quantities of paint and in one off cleaning of spray equipment. So adding a few parts tends to be not as much as one would expect. I have to spray parts for my K but am waiting to get them all done at the one time. I have debated painting my wheels but decided to transfer the ones from the LT at tyre change time and live with the blemishes as it will only cost me a set of disc bolts.

I’m calling in a few favours.
 
A really good friend of mine has two commercial vehicle conversions painted per week and the company that does the painting for him are going to do mine because I am a friend of his. I’ve done all the flatting down (almost finished) and they’re going to lay the paint on. I could lay the paint on myself but it will be better if it’s done by an expert.
The flatting down alone has taken ages would be a large part of the cost anyway. The finished that they get on his trucks, straight out of the gun is really good and I would be extremely happy with it.
 
The powder coating is done by another firm who are extremely slow but do a great job and I have had quite a lot of stuff done with them over the years. From time to time, they ask a bit of legal advice so it’s swings and roundabouts. As far as they are concerned it’s just the same as painting a couple of car wheels. I had my 4 old alloy Mercedes wheels done I think I paid 140 squids.
 
I only know of Dream Machine and I would imagine that they do a superb job at a price.
 
I must admit that I never even thought of anodising them but that’s probably because the nearest anodiser to me, that I’m aware of, is over a hundred miles away. The wheels are not that bad and a quick run around with a stainless steel pan scour would actually see them looking really good. I tend to be lazy though and hence silver powder coating is appealing.
 
I can honestly see me getting the wheels done because now I thought about it, my conscience wouldn’t let me not do it.
 
I replaced all but 1 of the exhaust manifold studs with stainless but couldn’t get the front right-hand one out even with map gas heat. I really didn’t want to snap it off so I’ve had to abandon it. It really grieves me to leave that one in there. I can be a bit anal like that.
 
I am also anal when it comes to using copaslip on threads everywhere.

Yes this is a nice old classic Mercedes. 2003 C220CDI Diesel Estate workhorse.
Worth about 1500 quid to sell but to me it’s worth three or four times that. Had it for 6 years and I would like to say it’s never missed a beat but it has. However whenever I’ve had it fixed, the bill has never disappointed me.
I had a couple of Mondeo estates before this which were also very reliable and I would have had another one.
However I’ve now had two old diesel Mercs I think that if I do get another car before I shuffle off the mortal coil it would be the same again. I have been tempted by a Volvo estate but I do like Mercs. .
 
There is another reason that is that I have a one-man band garage near me that specialises in Mercs and its him that keeps me going back there and buying Mercs. If he was out of business, I think I would probably get another Ford!

Don't know if you have done a clearcoat on your wheels, but if that is the route you take on paint I have a suggestion that can save considerable painting expense.

Purchase an inexpensive air brush.  I use a Badger model 250 which cost me $10 on eBay.  Use it to shoot a one part polyurethane auto paint and then take the part to a shop that does collision repair to have the clear coat applied. 

If it is a single part, they can run it through the paint booth with another job.  The labor if the part is already masked is only about 5-10 minutes and the amount of clear they use is what they normally dump at the end of the job and probably has been priced into the big job. 

At 40psi the air brush does a nice job of laying down the base and, if necessary, blending in the color on spot repairs.  I have repaired several fairing panels and a mirror on my RT and considering the slight 23 year fade and that the clearcoat is smoother than the factory job, the blend is virtually perfect.  You wouldn't know the parts have been repainted if I didn't tell you. 

I have only paid $20 for the clearcoat on a lower fairing panel.

Yes,.75, the wheels are clear coated. As Dream Machine painted the bike from new, I like to generally keep it's original appearance, although I do add a few detail extra blue bits, so getting them to paint a spare set of wheels seemed logical (and painting wheels is a bit of a pain IMO). Good idea about just paying for clear coating though.  A bit of a tidy up. 112350

All the fairing panels are painted and lined before clear coating so the lines on my bike are all well protected: a friend of mine has just bought an '83 R100RS in pearl white, very smart, but all the hand lining, red and silver, is suffering badly from being polished away.

Yes 88, it is a Motad from 1991! I have another brand new one in the loft for the outfit, but I can't get the old silencer off. Probably have to attack it with an angle grinder when I find a round tuit....only got square ones at the moment. A bit of a tidy up. 723598

My Motad pulls on and off without clamps and is only held on by the rear bracket but it is secure enough.
However when I did remove it to how little play around with things I could see the lines from a grinder in the header pipes so obviously someone else had to do the same thing Paul

There's been a little delay as the Bantam fork gaitors seem to have been lost in the post, so I ordered another set yesterday and they arrived this morning, along with some anti-freeze (Bluecol of course :flower: ) to re-fill the cooling system. Re-assembling and fitting the rear shock allowed me to move the bike at last. 
So, this tidy-up is now just about complete and, even though I say it myself, it's looking pretty good. A bit of a tidy up. 292303

Swapping the engine covers gave the opportunity to check the valve clearances, all good thankfully, even though the engine pre-dates the 'unleaded' versions. The output shaft rivets are also OK.  A bit of a tidy up. 112350

Having bought some NOS heated grips with open ends, I silver soldered some M6 inserts into the handlebar ends and machined away the bars to give clearance for the wiring, the home made end weights are now secured solidly to the bars with M6 socket screws.

Of course, it's not going to be any faster, run smoother or handle any differently, but there's something very satisfying about riding a nice clean and shiny K. 
Now, I just need to tidy up  the stand assembly............will it ever end?

It looks fantastic.
Was this a rolling restoration Paul? If so, how do you clean up the gearbox and final drive?
 
You mentioned rear shocker. I have a very basic looking Hagon one on mine with a black spring. The guy I bought the Wasp stuff and chair from had a red spring lurking around which he said I could have but I was on a wave of euphoria having picked the bits up and I’m not certain what he said about it. Anyway, for whatever reason I didn’t pick it up so I would have to get him to post it if he still has it.
 
What I’m getting round to, is what would your suggestion be for the rear spring?
 
I’ve done a lot of tinkering on mine and none of the bits that I have changed will make it run smoother faster et cetera but it does make me feel better. I know when I’ve taken one of my MZs apart and powder coated it and put it all back together again even though I may not touch the engine, I feel more confident riding it. I don’t know why because prettier paint doesn’t make it any more reliable!

Hi James,
This just started with changing the front tyre and when the front end was looking so good I couldn't help doing the back end. Over the past couple of years I've been buying e-bay stuff and re-furbishing it, so a lot of this 'tidy-up' has just been swapping parts. I've now got a load of parts (from the solo) to re-furbish for the outfit.

On the solo I'm still using the original shock and, as it's had a Bantam gaitor covering the damper rod most of it's life, it's still working perfectly. 
The outfit is a different kettle of fish; many years ago Motobins used to sell 'heavy duty' rear springs and that's what I've got on a shortened Spax shock with adjustable damping. Unfortunately, I don't know any details of the spring rating, but it doesn't move very much and that's the way I like it set up. You will probably find that you need heavier damping on your outfit compared to a solo.

I couldn’t go any shorter at the rear end because at the moment it’s quite low anyway and I am wondering whether it’s a shorter shock than normal.
 
With the wasp forks the back is lower than the front and there is not a fantastic amount of ground clearance, probably about 5 inches
 
I am at the Stafford Show on the MZ stand all weekend this weekend (I am the national chairman of the club) so I might pop down to the Hagon stand and see what they have to say. I will take a photograph and measure this one

We were on the balcony last year which was a pain in the backside.
Early last year it was the old Bonhams hall.
We always used to be in Sandylands but since Bonhams took over that hall, we have been like travellers.

You will recognise me because I am very smooth eggshell blonde.

Hi James,

I understand we are in the ex- Bonhams hall, so shouldn't be too far away. 

I hold all the BMW special tools for the UK Club, as well as manuals etc. so if you come to the stand just ask for me.
