hi expert brickers 
I am on another clutch cable after 3 previous ones. I researched and found out I contributed to its demise by not inspecting and lubing the barrel. Can someone explain how I can adjust the cable so that the tension when operated goes back to normal? I know it should not be this stiff when I pull. Is it as simple as removing and cleaning the clutch/side stand return arm?

Yeah I had that problem......decided to replace it and found it had frayed and couldn't return to the correct position.

Since you have new cables maybe not a problem, provided you are lubing the handlebar lever nipple so it can rotate in the lever and not pull the individual strands out of the nipple. Also can cause it to stick in the handlebar part of the mechanism. Been there.

When it goes stiff its usually a sign that the sheath has worn out. If you have BMW cables they should not be lubed as it destroys the Teflon sheathing. The Featherlight brand cables require a bit of light lube now and again as per their instructions. 
If its always been stiff its probably due to incorrect routing.
The nipple at the handlebar lever should be lubed to prevent cable stress and fraying .

I like Chris Harry's Video and learned a lot.
In this case BMW Manual writs somehow different.

To adjust the length to 75mm you will have to disconnect the clutch cable first from the withdrawal arm! Then measure.
I just did it this morning for both bikes, so that the clutch last a bit longer, hopefully:-)

That's the cable adjustment but the clutch operating lever should be adjusted as well (behind gearbox r/h side)
The Haynes manual describes the cable adjustment a little differently without removing the cable from the clutch operating lever and I think that's a better way.
I always adjust the operating lever first and then the cable.

But I doubt the cable adjustment would cause the stiffness reported by the OP. If the clutch lever has become hard to pull in its highly likely the cable is worn out.

I have found that when the cable length is adjusted to 75mm on my K75's the arm touches the muffler and makes an obnoxious clanking, especially when running down the road at cruising speed.

I check for this by pulling in the clutch lever all the way and then letting it snap out.  If you hear a clank as the arm hits the muffler you need to take up a little bit of the cable length.  When you've done that you will need to readjust the pushrod bolt to get the correct lever freeplay.

Cheers, Paul.  For the pedantic amongst us, the optimum dimension is 73.8731mm.  I suspect those lazy engineers at Motorad just rounded off to 75.

Ha! That 'clanking' is exactly why I have been searching these old threads  Smile

Does the muffler have to come off to adjust the pushrod bolt? Not looking forward to that...

Any other consequences if I leave it to 'clank'?

I adjusted the gap so it doesn't quite touch the muffler and have had no problems.
Its a common complaint.
