well i,ve finally decided to get out of the shed and tap a few lines out to introduce myself to one and all , name is steve and get called woodcutter aka woodpecker , i live in the west side of the grampians in victoria have a great little plot of dirt here ( 5 acres) and far from the crazy world in the city , been riding bikes most of my life since age of 15 first bike was  early 60's trumpy bonneville paddock bike , frame, tank ,2 wheels, dunlop trials universals, something resembling a seat , then had a stint into jappos for a while  r3 ,r5 yammys, had an xs2 650 on and off for years spent a lot of years travelling and working seasonal work around this great country of ours , settled in sydney for a time , live north of cairns just south of cooktown on and off , back to sydney buying , riding , racing bmw's ,ducati's, laverdas, in formula european, BEARS , etc anyway to cut a long story into a short one i,m now living in victoria and have a nice 1987 k100 basic with the optional k75c fairing , 78,000 original klms and is on CPS great bike ive set it up well , now i also bought a 1988 k100rt in below average condition to strip the ugly fairing of it and build a custom, so every thing thats was bolted, cable tied or held on with insulting tape is all taken off to a bare frame , frame has been sandblasted and painted in a super fantastic paint from VALSPAR it called direct to metal, 2 pack , tough as it comes leaves ordinary 2pack , and powder coat for dead, originally was going to put the old 2 valve motor back in but had issues with white spotty corrosion due to being on the coast at portland , so i found an 1985 motor and used that as it only has 53,000 klms original , and was going to mate it up to the monolever , then i sourced a 1994 k1100lt gearbox, swing arm and FD to use , new rear main seal alternator seal , gear selector seal , input seal @ g-box  new clutch and bolted it back together as a unit .NOW  i spotted a supposedly K100RS 16VALVE motor advertised on fleabay watched it relentlessly and ended up getting it a very good price so the guy could pay his rego on his pristine 1993 FZR 1000 , yes you guessed it ENTER JASON aka HALO lmao what a great guy he is tops in my books and he sent me 20 pages of the k100 forum on his relentless  trials and tribulations with his K so i went up to his place in the hills and squaffed cups of yorkshire tea and talked bikes and past experiences with him slipping the odd nip of jamieson as the tall tales but true continued through out the day , now it was a real shame to see all his hard work and relentless effort on the bench looking like a mob of lizards and snakes had shed their skins all over the shed floor from the clear coat he used the japs tried using it in the 70's & 80's and it turned poxy yellow colour and peeled also , HALO convinced me to go on the forum and look for advise " SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND " lmao with this 16 valve motor i bought from him im not sure if its a k100rs 16v OR  k1100 16v motor , as you learned pipple well know early 2v k100 engine number started as   104EA , and i assume a similar code for the 16v , the k1100 rs /lt had a engine number starting with 114EA to indicate  1100cc , and the k1200 starts as 124EA  to indicate 1200cc , now this motor of jasons is weird ??!! the engine number is     MBM098745M738902179  can any one tell me is it a 1000cc 16v or an 1100cc 16v , methinks possibly a k1100 lt shipped in as a factory bmw cop bike  either to victoria , nsw , who knows and then fitted out with all the bells and whistles i would really like to find out before i start buying engine looms and frame looms , ecu,s etc etc etc , i read your reply rick g , and blakey , and ducky re using a 2 valve loom and tweaking the 2v ecu , spoke to ray peakes and he said it could be done but easier with the proper looms , also which way do i go with the ECU's motronic 2.1 or motronic 2.2  any way need to go and make a coffee and chill out ok any help will be greatly appreciated , and i will be giving HALO encouragement and assistance with his k resto as best as i can for all his effort ,and the wheelbarrow full of $$$$$$$$ he's put into it  cheers guys and we might catch up on a ride some day maybe a camping trip to the grampians for those of you interstate i have 5 acres here plenty of room to pitch a tent  million $$$$$$ views and some great roads to be explored cheers steve Hi to one and all from the west side of the GRAMPIANS in victoria 447221Hi to one and all from the west side of the GRAMPIANS in victoria 112350

Hey Steve. As far as I know the first two digits represent the engine capacity and the third indicates the number of cylinders. so 104EA is a K100. 114EA is an K1100. That engine number from Jason's motor seems to be something else.

By the way, I'm the guy who bought your YSS off Gummy
Good to see you  finally made it to the forum mate. Enjoy

Cheers

EDIT: Just a thought but that number from Jason (MBM098745M738902179) looks like a VIN to me. The 10th character is always a letter which represents the year of manufacture. M=1991
However, VINs are usually 17 digits but this one is 19???

The number is probably one issued by some state authority because the block or complete engine was replaced from the spare parts bin.  It couls also be that the engine number was removed by some not very smart criminal and a new number is issued by police or roads authority.  Considering that the K engine number is actually on the sump section it is not difficult to change.

Hi All, Got to the recently acquired K75s yesterday and with Steve's help got to the clutch and as expected found the splines on the friction plate to be non existent. The splines on the gearbox input shaft are also damaged somewhat and I'm thinking of swapping shafts out of and old K100 gearbox. I have checked shaft part numbers and they match up.
Can anyone see any problems with this idea assuming the K100 input shaft is OK. Thanks in advance. Here are a couple of photos.Hi to one and all from the west side of the GRAMPIANS in victoria Img_0514

hi blaKey, just for you we have glorious blacktop as well as dirt and gravel and at the moment some really muddy boggy ones after all the rain we have had " wettest july on record " according to the local community  newsletter BTW i,m not a great fan of dirt roads when riding a road bike either leave it for the GS crowd , i would like one of those one day santa.   BlaKey  might see you one day if you make it this far south cheers.

hi rick i think you are on the same track as me , luckily i have a good mate who's also the local copper and he's going to check vicpols records in the coming days . But if the sump was changed i was lead to believe that they are unique to the original cylinder block as where the output absorber shaft is line bored to match the two halves so if the sump was changed there's the possibility of them not being exactly true for the shaft to run in, well thats scary as some lowlife can abscond with your pride and joy buy a s/h sump off fleabay and 1 hrs work rebirth you bike engine into theirs scary stuff  well i will just have to wait and see what turns up from vicpol oh rick and the engine number is factory stamped nice and neat same style as my other k100 cheers steveHi to one and all from the west side of the GRAMPIANS in victoria 2601034182  will put up some photos of bikes and associated paraphernalia once i figure it out how to do it Hi to one and all from the west side of the GRAMPIANS in victoria Icon_biggrin

The sumps are line bored but there have been quite a few done by forum members and AFAIK there has been no problems.
I swapped a couple myself from K100 to K1100, just for my own amusement, and no problems, fitted together like they were made for each other.

hi gary thats a big help as my engine number is # MBM098745M738902179  , and vicroads here can confirm the engine number BUT won't give out the VIN number due to official protocol !! unless i get an official receipt for the motor from HALO ( which is on its way ) then front down to the motor registry with it in hand and nicely ask the manager for further information ( its at the branch managers discretion ). Furthermore i was talking to the workshop manager at southbank bmw and he confirmed that the engine size is between 980cc and 987cc which almost confirms its a k100rs16v as halo said it was  but you say your number is the vin # and the engine # starts with wb1052305m>>>>>>  so why is my engine number stamped with a vin number strange ??? anyway its given me some confidence to purchase a main wiring harness from the uk and a engine injection harness as well to match .so does your system have the bosch ignition switch on the battery box ( which is used as a heat sink to stop it from having nuclear meltdown ) and what is the bosch /bmw number on the ecu ?? all this will most beneficial in ordering the correct parts , just received an email from bmw munich via there office here in victoria requesting my postal address and are going to forward further information wow!! wonders will never cease !! i thank you for your reply  gary and if you or any other member on the forum travel down south pm me and drop in , pitch a tent , spare bed , hot showers , great coffee, and food whatever  regards steve

hi rick still at odds trying to solve the mystery engine number from jason have been onto BMW MUNICH and they are looking into the matter , garyK has a vin number that starts off with the same  digits / numerals as my engine number now after searching fleabay.com ive discovered a k100 1985 cylinder block stamped YBM098745K3338419 cant make out the last digits and also from the same seller a 1990/1991 k100rs cylinder block and sump with engine number stamped MBM098745M and cant make out the other digits , then theres a sump housing for sale in utah that shows its a 1990/1991 k100 rt/lt and its number is similar to my other k's and is stamped  104EA 0490 2397 which is what i expected although garyK's engine numer starts at wb********* and so on , its a mystery to a lot of people when the official receipt arrives in the mail from jason i'll trundell down to vicroads and hopefully they can tell me if that number has been registered in this state before and supply me with vin number and hopefully previous owner maybe even give PPSR a call and do a search if no record is found looks like i will have to buy another sump and change it over to a recognisable number as i dont think they will accept a 19 digit number   thanks for your time " life was not meant to be easy " lmao regards woodcutter
it could possibly be a usa import according to the engine number found on fleabay.com any input from other members  especially in the usa will greatly appreciated

I have seen some strange things come in from The US like some big block chevy engines that had no numbers on them and was told that a replacement engine often didnt have numbers but that was home grown not from der farterland.

hey rick i have confirmation from der farterland in munich and they recognise the production date and serial number as being manufactured in the 38th week of 1990 and was installed into a k100rs 16v chassis/frame on the 12th of september 1990 and exported to australia  so it looks like a kosher engine that hopefully has been registered at one time before , but they dont know / relate to the numerals and digits preceding that ie MBM098745M7 JUST SAYING IT WAS NOT A EUROPEAN NUMBER AND OBVIOUSLY AN OVERSEAS BIKE OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT so i will trundle down to vicroads local office on friday with jasons receipt in hand and make further enquiries  thank you and the other forum members for the assistance they have given me regards to one and all ***  woodcutter

The Basic/2 wasn't a big seller - only about 1200 built from late 1987 to 1989. They weren't sold in Australia new, my was a Japanese delivered one that was brought to Queensland in 2006.
