I watched the expert do my seat and put the cover on. He used clamps that clip over the seat edge to hold it in place while he used a staple gun to attach it to the base.

What did the expert charge you Rick?

I have a new cover here from motobins that I havnt put on yet as I was waiting to see if I would modify the seat at all. Now Im a bit reluctant to do it my self and mess it up...

Floyd, if you've got an '84 metal based seat you'll need to pop-rivet the cover in place, just replicate the original fixings. 

The later (cheapo?) seats have a plastic base and those covers can be stapled.

From the standard of work you've already done on your bike, covering the seat should be a doddle for you.

ill post up some pics when I can  ...but I have the plastic seat base ...which will take rivets if that's what you want .

The issue you run into on the "Comfort Seats" form the 80's is that the cover is glued to the foam inside.  When the vinyl got so tatty I couldn't stand it anymore I had it recovered by a local motorcycle seat ace who warned me that the foam might tare and stick to the old cover and the foam would not be smooth after the recover.

He was right.  The seat came out looking "okay" but not perfect.  At least there weren't any cracks in the vinyl with the new cover.  I find the fact it failed interesting as the motorcycle never spent and extended time outside, it was always out of sunlight when it was parked.

The new sewn cover was attached to the base with a bunch of staples and some glue.

When you think about it a seat cover that lasts 30 years or near that is fairly good but years of heat and some sun and the occasional fart will kill almost any seat cover.
