So I have the K1100 well and truly entrenched in the garage now and thought time to make a thread as I have been doing a bit and a lot more needs to be done.

Smurfette.

Smurfette - The bike Smurfe10

The bike has lived by the sea for many years and is showing signs of light corrosion.
One day she will be stripped and cleaned right up, but for now it is maintenance.

I think the list will be quite extensive when I really start looking.
What I know:
Needs a new rear main seal.
New throttle cable
New front master cylinder
New tyres
New pads
Electricals cleaned up and De-0xitited
Side stand switch
Fuel tank plug
ABS flush
Choke light
TB balance
Valve clearance

What I have done:
Oil and filter
Gearbox & final drive oil
Spline lube (in perfect nic)
Fork seals blew out. Changed and cleaned a huge mess.
Front master cylinder cleaned and re-installed, but the sight glass is leaking. Thoughts?
Low seat installed.
Two LED hi vis lights installed.
Bought a new clutch cable as mine feels notchy. If I pull the lever in half way and then decide I need to bring it the rest of the way in it seems to resist. Possibly the bearing at the rear arm? Installed new cable next to old. Note to self to carry spare nipple.

That is about it for now. I had my own shed weekend and also got stuck into the old bike to get her back on the road.
The /2 is on the way out the door.

Rosskko! Rosskko! The name of the game isn't to get rid of any of them, especially a classic like the /2 red beast - you just have to find a way of getting more shed space.

Maybe we need to set ourselves a target of going to the Alpine Rally on the K1100s this year since it is a sealed road access year I'm sure the fairing would be useful at that time of year. You'll have to keep the red one for next year's Alpine back at the bottom of the hill. I'm hoping to turn my attention back to doing some work on my K1100 now as well.

On a serious note re the shed space, I'm looking into one of those car stacker hoists like a four post service hoist to put into one garage in another house if missus and I downsize our property in the next 12 months or so. I figure I can put 3 bikes and a trailer on a lift above one of the cars.

Mate your Smurfette is a bloody good looking bike, and I'm sure with the maintenance and repairs sorted will be a seriously good ride.
Always hard to get rid of one, to make way for another, but I reckon the /2 should find a good home as it's also a top looking  bike.
Good luck with it rosskko.

Rossko,

Check the clutch lever and the nipple in the lever. If that's not lubricated or is missing its sleeve, when you pull the lever the nipple rotates with the ever and pulls the cable at an angle, then the nipple slips in the lever housing and you can feel it. Do it while bike is on the stand and you might see it. It gives a notchy feeling and is often the cause of an early cable break. Grease it up and see what happens. The cable doesn't come with the little sleeve.

The Alpine is sealed road?????

You bloody rippa. Heated grips here we come.

I am still dreaming of a K1 and every time I see a good one the response is 'sell one of your bikes and get one'

I still have the original RT in the garage and that is never to be sold so the Alpine on dirt roads is looking good.

Never sold a bike before so I am not sure how hard it will be Smithy. I almost cried when the Commodore went and that was only 5 years ago. Jeez I miss that car. It was MY COMMODORE damn it.

Olaf, I greased my nipple, I replaced the nylon bush in the handle and even bought and replaced the felt thing that I never knew I had and it is still a bit grabby in the handle. Hopefully when I do the rear seal and pull the gearbox and re assemble it might magically free up. Can only hope.

And on that topic, why put something so integral to the operation of a lever in a position where it can be lost the moment the cable is broken???

Why not have the nipple sit into the lever FROM THE TOP with a little bit of a ridge thing to stop it falling out the bottom when the cable breaks.
That's it. I am done. Thanks for the comments. Now where is that post on the Gulf JPS K100? Hope he has photos up already.

Check inside the slot in the lever where the inner can wear a slight groove and if there is a groove then you have a groovy lever Ha Ha you need a new lever.
Is the front Master Cylinder OK to use?

TWB, that seat has been banished to the top of the cupboard.
It is too tall for me. Put a low seat on and it is perfect.
I am surprised how much better the riding position is on the 1100RS as opposed to the 100. Maybe due to the 100RS not having the low seat?

And what is with the extra reach on the 1100?
I have measured from the back of my seat on the 1100 and the 100 to the knurled nut on the steering head and the distance is the same, but I reach more on the 1100. Still a very comfy ride.

Rick, the lever looked good to me. Already had a bunch of grease in it so cleaned that out and replaced with 1/16 the quantity.

The front master is fine to use. I cleaned it out in the ultrasonic bath and removed the racing tape the PO had installed to stem the fluid flow out the window. Now there is only a very slight weep that is close to nothing.

K1100RS' have a wider, flatter bar than K100RS', so perhaps that's contributing to the feeling of a longer 'reach'.

I know what you mean, though, as I went for the first good burble on my K11 last weekend and I felt a bit more stretched out over the bike.

Paralever swingarms are slightly longer than Monolever and K1100RS forks are less raked than earlier forks (which means about the same wheelbase between models), but that shouldn't be affecting the nut between the seat and the 'bars!

The main fairing stay off the steering stem on the K100RS is a different part number from the shared part number of the K1100RS and 16V K100RS, so that might have an influence. Perhaps it juts forward a smidge further. I will grab a tape measure and see what results I can find 'tween the two.

It isn't any difference in the position of the fairing on these models,
as both versions of the K100RS using the same inner panels along
the side of the fairing.
But the 4V models have a more solid fairing bracket made of tubes,
the one on the 2V model is made of stamped sheet metal.

Fork seals blew out massivly. Both at the same time and had oil from front to back and all the cracks in between.

Replaced and all good so far.

Then on Thursday on the way home from work the fan siezed and then proceeded to melt as hot fluid flowed out of the bottle.
Scavanged the one off the old RT (seriously, it is not a donor bike) and put it back together.

A few pics of the cave.
This was the scene before the koffee ride today.

I hope you can all relate.

Make sure to clean the oil out of the radiator fins or massive amounts of crud accumulate and blocks the air flow.

And the good thing about that sanctuary Rosskko is that you are the only one who knows where everything is in there and why it's there. Sometimes other family members just don't get it do they?

Mate, it sounds like you might have been close to the feeling I have had a couple of times this last 12 months when I have had three bikes in the shed and none ready to ride - luckily, as I'm sure you were, I have been grateful that BMW used common parts across various models and I was able to get on the road with a quick change on a part from one bike to another.

Cheers

got me some new tyres.
Local shop, guy is helpful and friendly which makes a big difference, but
Saturday morning.
'Pilot Road 4s please'
'Got em right here'
'Oh? cool' Strange I thought to have my size off the rack.
Tyre fitter guy 'What size is the rear? It's not 17!'
'18'
'18? what bike has 18? I just assumed....'

Front already on. Old rear taken off, tried to put a 17 on and ended up putting the old tyre back on so I could get to work.
Today (Tuesday) took a spare rim to put the tyre on and was informed they could not get the Pilot 4 in the 18" so have a 4 on the front and 3 on the back.
Still two very good tyres, but not entirely happy with the outcome.

"What bike uses an 18" rear..."

Common mistake amongst those perhaps more Japanese/Italian bike oriented.

That's a bummer for you, but only a bit. Let's see, which bikes? All K100-16V, K1100RS, R850R (earlier version), R1100R, R1100RS & R1100RT. Not a lot. What tyre manufacturer is going to (continue to) cater for that small market? Not many do.

Not to worry, as I used a new PR4 front when they came to market with a PR3 rear on my R1150RT (17" rear, but not because it wasn't available) for the life of the rear and they're fully compatible.

G'day Rosskko , I'm using PR3's front & rear on mine , great tyres , only issue is the front is very noisy , having a PR4 on the front ( new tread pattern ) with the PR3 on the rear is a better combo

I have PR2s on my K1100 and they are very noisy. I was hoping the PR3s would be better but not so.

That's interesting about noise from your tyres. I have never heard the PR3 or 4 above any other brand of tyre. On the R1150RT I suppose it could be the vast expanse of plastic at the front possibly blocking some of it. Or just that I never noticed any.

It's just as me dear old mum always said, 'You never pay attention to me!'

I call it selective hearing.

With the PR2s the rougher the road the more noise. With really smooth surface there is virtually no noise and the real rough stony bitumen the noise is like a roar. I can get the noise level down a bit by making sure the tyres are inflated to 36 and 44psi but that is a bit higher than I prefer for feel and comfort.

So got the new tyres on and pretty happy if not more confident. PR4 front and PR3 rear. The old ones were old >5 years so they had to go.

Also got some of those cheap pads from the states. $50 posted for a full set. Put the rear ones on tonight and will give them a run the next few days then put on the front pads. I figure if they are crap then at least only one part of my braking will be crap.

Had a great ride to Newtown and beyond. Followed Waz down to his place, on his black beauty with him on the 1100 so he could weld up a broken pannier bracket.
I hope the quality of the job is in direct proportion to the amount of smoke. Should hold forever.

Rosskko recently brought Smurfette for a run up to Newcastle to show his support along with other Krew members at the Blue Boxer Ride.
Our photographer on the day caught a few good snaps of Smurfette , so I thought I should share them here with you.
Both Rosskko and Smurfette look a treat. I'm sure most would have to agree.

Rosskko took home a prize for his efforts , well done on the day mate. Thanks for being there.

Ok, made a start on Thursday night.
Took a while, but some serious decisions were made so I would be ready to start the bike repairs on Friday night.

Smurfette - The bike Dsc_4410

Batten down the hatches. Seems a very unsteady beast.

Smurfette - The bike Dsc_4411

Maybe I left this seal change a bit late. Might have to clean that off.

Smurfette - The bike Dsc_4412

Nothing complicated about this ABS stuff.

Smurfette - The bike Dsc_4413

Weld anyone?

Smurfette - The bike Dsc_4414

Hmmmmm. I think I did let it soak for too long.

Smurfette - The bike Dsc_4415

Next time I might pay more attention to the warning signs. What are they you ask? Redline in 4th at 60kph would be one.

Smurfette - The bike Dsc_4416

So now I wait for the son in law to come home so he can hold the bike while I attempt to undo the clutch carrier nut, but until then it is time to don the black stovepipe jeans, put on my best black shirt and head off to see accadacca.

It's a long way

given I"m overdue for the same proceedure , gotta give you credit for going it alone there Rosskko.
You're starting to sKare me a bit of the task ahead.
Those Torque stands are nice to look at , bit worrisome in use though. Glad you strapped Smurfette in for the ride.
I still have a couple of more jobs with Ol' Blue before I brave the inners, I'd be happy to share a guinness or two if you are still at it next weekend, otherwise I best start stocking up for my attempt.
enjoy the show , I heard Angus is the last original band member?

A rattle gun is the way to get those out. Have you got a compressor?

Hope you check the plates for dishing and have you got a new friction plate?

G'day Rosskko, You're going well with the Smurfette. Rick is right about the rattle gun, they work a treat. Luckily I have a 12V impact spanner that really works, Good luck with it. Cheers Tom

Rosskko my original exhaust on the K1100 came off exactly the same way and it's easily fixed - spend a shitload lot of money on a Staintune system.

Good luck!

It is VERY important to keep the support on thr right side near the centre stand in good condition. apparently that is what causes them to crack up.

Rick, plates are smooth as. Friction plate looked almost new.
I have a replacement plate to put in.

Rattle gun worked a treat. Probably first time in there as there was thread lock on the shaft.

Taking the pipes to a muffler place tomorrow.
Question, are they stainless? If not a mate can weld it up.

Rick, I noticed the right muffler mount was loose and it appears to be the same as the mount for the crash bars?
Also when I took the stand off, the rubber insert came out.
If they are the same part then I have about 3 new replacements. Old crash bar one has been superceded. Maybe I should just go look.

Greasy as all get out and having fun. Guinness o'clock yet?
cheers guys

They are stainless and if necessary can be welded with an ordinary mig with no ill effect except the weld isn't stainless and will rust but in there who will see it.
The mounts are the same.
Check the steel plates aren't dished as in put a straight edge across the flat surface and the surface should be touching the plate across the full width of the friction surface.
Don't forget to lube the wire ring or the make a shit of a noise. It is easy to overlook.

Checked the plates. When I said 'smooth as', technically they are smooth. Just not flat across the disc. I doubt you would get a hair through the gap. It is on the inside edge. Sticking them back in as I have no alternative atm.

Got the seal in and O ring and clutch. Cleaning up the gearbox so I don't re-contaminate teh new disc with leftover crud and that should go back on tonight.
Got a replacement for the muffler rubber mount.
Got grease under every nail. Laughing

You need stainless steel nails to cope with the weather exposure.
