I am planning to replace the front fork seal on my K100.....wish me luck!

These bikes are amazing and so far I have enjoyed doing my own repairs, the last being a successful conclusion to a heavy clutch.

I do hope this job goes as well as an MOT certificate is now required Front Fork Seal Icon_cherry

Hi Mike,
Probably worth changing the fork oil again in a week or two to make sure all the crap (that is a technical term) is flushed out.

That sounds like a good idea the oil I took out was very murky looking pond water with a dash of sticky mud.

The cost of the fork oil is not too bad so I will use it as a first flush. Thanks for the tip.

One last thought I have heard of people using ATF as a flushing agent on badly contaminated forks as relatively it is quite cheap. They fill the forks give them a pounding up and down with a short ride with sharp braking to make them work up and down and then straight back and drain out then replace with more ATF, drive drain and then use the right stuff.

K-BIKE

Hi
I read that too, I did not find the Fork seal oil to badly priced and as the job was relatively easy I think I will give it a change after I have done some miles. I always thought fork seals were difficult to replace but the K100 has yet again proved what a great bike it is to ride and repair. I owned a couple of Pan Europeans previously and I would not service them myself, they also proved to be a handful to ride at times where as the K100 is more forgiving and stable.

It's always nice to read about people trying to keep these K100 on the road and a couple of people impressed me by rolling their sleeves and starting to do their own mechanic.
This is the intend of this forum: Helping each others. The mechanic is so simple, that a majority of riders having a little bit of mechanical knowledge could maintain the K100. We have a couple of people with extended mechanical knowledge and they are not shy about sharing.

I believe that the K100 forum is one of the best as we are mostly sharing our mechanical experience. I am giving a thumb up to all the contributors.

Trip reports, pictures and a good joke are welcome too.

Bert

This is a good forum and looking back at post where people have done repairs helps a lot when you are setting out to do the job for the first time.

Now for a joke;

A biker is riding a new motorcycle on the
highway.

While passing a car, he knocks on the window. The
driver of the car opens the window and says, "Yes?" The bike responds,
"Ever driven a Honda motorcycle?" The driver says, "No I
haven't."

The biker drives on, until he sees the next car.
While passing it, he knocks on the window. The driver of the car opens the
window and says, "Yes?" The bike responds, "Ever driven a Honda
motorcycle?" The driver says, "No I haven't."

Then, suddenly, there is a curve, the biker sees
it too late. He crashes off the road into a ditch. A car stops and a man runs to
the unlucky biker. Covered in blood and surely dying, the biker asks, "Ever
driven a Honda motorcycle?" The man replies, "Yes I have. I had a
Honda for 20 years". The biker asks, "Where are the brakes?"

I've had my K bike for just over a year now. I've replaced the main seal, clutch components, done a complete spline lube, rebuilt the master cylinder, replaced the seals in the starter, repaired the leaking fuel tank, replaced the fuel filter and all the fluids, replaced the plugs and plug wires and put new tires on. The only thing I've paid anybody to do thus far is mount my tires to the rims.

I'm not a mechanic by any means.....just can't afford to have anybody do my dirty work for me. The point is that between this forum and my Clymers manual I've been able to do all of the work myself. This forum has been invaluable to me.

The only thing left to do is replace a leaking fork seal.....which is why I'm on this thread right now!

I have a 1990 K100 LT on which the oil seal on the left fork is leaking. Do you have to remove all panels in order to remove the fork(s)?

You don't need to remove any plastic except maybe the glove boxes to get easier access to the clamping bolts on the triple clamps. Once those bolts are slack then the forks will or should slide out. Remove the wheel and don't leave the calipers hanging on the brake lines.
