Hello everyone - I have a 1993 K1100LT. The bike has some sort of short (+ other e-issue) that I cannot find. It started with the headlights flickering once in a while while switching from high to low beam. One day I pull into my driveway, come to a stop and turn the handle bar slightly and it died. After that, the bike started just fine and I had it parked in my shop for all winter. This spring I wanted to get it out; the bike started right up but had a gas leak in one of the fuel lines coming out of the fuel tank. I replace the fuel lines, and since I was a it, I also replace a faulty wire harness for the windshield and replaced the high/low bean switch assembly with a used part. Before putting all back together I tried starting the bike; the first thing I notice the headlights would not work; the starter is not turning now either (just makes a one click sound).  All fuses are fine and the grounds seem to be fine; the battery is on a battery tender so I am assuming it is good - I will check it though; anyway I am okay mechanic (i.e. I've never had to take a car or bike to a shop for repair) but not for electrical.   Can someone help me trouble shoot this?   If you are close to Sacramento, stop by to help and I'll be willing to provide bbq, beer, and if required, $s.

Thanks, Jav

Try a new battery and check for the load shedding relay. The lights switch off when the starter is engaged.

Take the battery to any auto parts store and ask them to "load test" it to see if it's any good.  It's free. (Because it gets you in the store and helps them sell batteries.)

Take the time to go through all the connectors on the bike especially those under the tank and in the relay box.  It's possible your problems are due to intermittent contact inside those connectors.  What's recommended is to get a can of Deoxit contact cleaner and take apart each connector, spray them and reseat the connector several times to make sure that the wipers scrub away accumulated corrosion.  Also, take apart your starter motor and clean it.  There are tutorials on this site on how to do that.  Check the brushes at the same time and replace if required.  Grounding for the motorcycle goes through that motor and any dust/ debris/wear in that motor can cause grounding problems resulting in weird electrical problems.

It usually only causes them to quit once they warm up a bit but another thing to do on a 93 LT is refresh the heat sync compound for the ignition amp.

Look at the bottom of this:

Thank you for the advise and sorry for late reply.... I've been three weeks out of the country and got back last Friday night. This morning I tested the battery and it was fine; I took apart the starter and cleaned it, it wasn't too dirty but hard plastic pieces from the plastic plate that seems to isolate the bolt/brush from the outer body of starter was broken. Luckily I had an old starter from a bike I bought for parts and between the both starters I assembled a  "complete"  one.  Put starter and battery back together and the bike starter works great.  I will put all the front fairing etc together and report back to the group...., I suspect the problem was the starter.  Thank you everyone for coming to my aid so quickly!
Cheers, jav
