Hi everyone,

I have an ex-police 1992 K100LT and have recently had to change the fuel tank as it developed a leak, I used to get about 160 miles on a full tank, with the tank I have replaced it with I can only get about 120 miles on a full tank.

My question is this, can anyone tell me what is the largest tank size available for a K100LT.

kindest regards
Stephen

Hi Stephen,
Have you thought of repairing the old tank. There are a number of very well regarded petrol tank sealants such as Permatex which are a putty like substance which one kneads the two components into a homogeneous mix and applies to the outside of the tank pressing a blob down onto the leak point. Many people use that and have no further problems for years.
Regards,
K-BIKE

Hi K-BIKE,
Unfortunately my father-in-law thought he was doing me a favour and told the scrap merchants when they were passing to take my old tank away thinking I didn't want it.

The quantities shouldn't be different. What indicates the different mileage? Gauge or light or running dry? It could be that when you put the fuel pump in you didn't seat it deep enough. Or that the gauge float is not adjusted right.

Hi Rene, thank you for your reply, I suppose the fuel pump might not be fully seated, I will check it this week-end, the fact that I took the float from the old tank to the new one it could have been bent slightly. If the float bar is bent how does one tell.

The best way to setup the rod is to empty your tank and put 4 liters in your tank. Then, adjust the rod to have the 4 liters light on. If your bike has the 2 lights (4l and 8l) poor another 4 liters and see if the light is going off.

I'm curious to know what range and refill volumes other K100RT owners typically get. My 7L light starts coming on about 165km.I think it is on solid by around the 200km mark and the 4L light starts coming on by 220km. For the first few tanks I would refill around 250km which is soon after the 4L light stays on solid, but I was only putting about 17L in, so I figured I had plenty of fuel left.

A couple of days ago, I ran it all the way to 299km before refilling, but it was giving the occasional hiccup / surge from 289km. I really thought I wasn't going to make it to the nearest pump. When I refuelled, I could only fit 18.5L in, though I'm not filling it all the way to the bottom of the lip either. I'm leaving an inch / 25mm or so of space.

A friend of mine who owns a K75 was waiting at my house for me when I 'almost' ran out of fuel. He says he gets 300-360km per tank, but fills it right to the brim.

On my last trip I made two 300 kmts legs at 140km/hr and reffiled (to the tanks top lid) 17.5 lts each time, with no engine starving symptoms.

Being a lucky owner of a K75 and a K100, I can tell you that the difference between the 2 bikes is ...... 1 cylinder Very Happy
With the K75 I can ride 300 kms before the fuel warning light starts to glow and with the K100, the 7 liters light starts to glow at around 210 kms.
I don't know how far i could go as I try to refuel as soon as the light is ON.

I wouldn't trust the lights. When my 7 liter warning light goes on there's actually about 12 liters left in the tank, when the 4 liter light goes on there's about 7 liters left. I've confirmed this by fueling up when the lights come on. Best is to try it yourself and it will give you a better idea what your bike warning lights are actually indicating. The best I've been able to do is about 270 km on a tank of premium fuel.

Just come back from my first longish run, 400klms on nice roads 80/110 klm speeds. The economy was much better, I can get 320ks from one tank so I feel much better now, just these shorter runs screwing me up. I have never been able to ride more that 200klm with my dicky back before, a testimont to the riding position and comfort of the RT.

My 2 bob's worth on this - neither of my lights work, never have in the 5 years I've owned the rt. I tried to fix the problem early on, but to no avail, so on reading about the consistent economy and checking how many litres are required versus Km's covered I have gained confidence in the bike's reliable economy.
I use Premium 98 whenever possible, 95 at other times. In Tassie 98 is about 10% more expensive than 95, but it equates to approximately 10% more Km's per tank, and that's a worthwhile (security) benefit when touring. Basically I refill at about 280 - 300 Km's, but have stretched it to 320, 2 up, panniers and top case loaded. Typical speeds 80 - 110 (B roads and highways).
