Hi there,

The opening of the riding season is done today. Maintenance and some improvements were made during the off-season: rear drive seals were renewed, steering bearings were tightened, front tire was renewed and heated grips were installed. A lower engine cover with brackets are being painted at the moment. There are no leaks or strange noises anymore. The bike starts finally to look like the original 80's bike and is ready for a hard ride.

Before I do wish you Happy Easter, I do have couple of questions:

1)     Alternator: On idle it generates somewhat 11.5-11.7 volts. While driving 13.1 – 13.3 volts. Is this normal or should I be worried about it?
2)     Originality of the bike: If you look at my bike (picture), is it normal to have 2-part front fender on a 1986-model and round-end muffler?
3)     Windshield: What kind of windshield/extension you would recommend? I am 6,13 foot tall, so wind will grab my helmet strongly with original fairing.

Cheers JP

Factory exhaust has a long heat shield on it and is rectangular at the back. Yours is aftermarket, maybe Black Hole brand.

I don't think the two piece fender came out until later. Look under the fork plastic caps to see what forks you have. If you have the S forks but no S stamped in the top then those are the earlier pre-S forks.

Season opened - some questions Dscn3126 The exhaust looks like the exhaust on my 1991 K100RS.  I know they are interchangeable because I put an early exhaust system on my 1992 K100RS when the pipes were cracking.  Rode it with that exhaust for 3 years.

Typically at higher RPMs the voltage regulator kicks in at about 14-14.2 volts. 13.1 will probably keep your battery charged but you may need to replace the brushes or the voltage regulator.

Thank you all for the comments,

Duck and Martin W:
* Maybe it is better to order a brand new voltage regulator right away. Not to play with the old one anymore. This way I can make sure that there will be no problems due to the regulator later.

Point-Seven-Five:
* The current exhaust pipe is taken from one spare motorcycle (2V). Maybe it was not there original either. According to OEM spare part catalog, this round end pipe seems to be an alternative, but I have no idea which year model it belongs to - might be for 16v engine. Anyway, I am happy with it and it is working well although installation was not quite P&P. Somehow I just don't like the square end muffler.

Duck:
* Forks upper part looks the same than in the left picture (Sport), but there are no "S" marking. That made me think that forks are taken from a newer bike.

Any idea for the extended (taller) windshield/-screen for rs-model?

Just to help you identify your exhaust, here is a photo.  Notice the hose clamps around the headers, they are there to prevent the welds breaking at the collector by damping vibrations.  I would suggest putting them on your exhaust.

Exactly that one. Although my bracket is selfmade to fit the pipe in my bike. Need to pay attention to those hose clamps. Valuable information, thanks.

Check to see if your exhaust has that big square part that goes under the transmission to see if it a K100RS4V exhaust.

Season opened - some questions T1qv7ye

I can't imagine why anyone would want to put one of those on an earlier 2V K100. It's a horrible exhaust because it weighs a ton, makes maintenance more difficult and the tendency for the header-collector welds to crack.

The Aeroflow would probably work but it is costly and, due to the size, would probably cost a lot to ship to Europe.

Yes, I do have that square part in exhaust pipe. Heeeh, can you imagine that if you get one for 50€ and it is in mint condition? That's why I do have it cheers. It was a lot easier to get than original pipe at that time.

Gorgeous job on the resto.--looks really clean!  Very Happy

I have a Parabellum fairing and love it.  But I understand overseas shipping might be pricey.   I always liked the look of the French Secdem products--and if Irc you can get them in different tints, too!

I'm thinking that exhaust will flow just a tad better than the earlier version.  Whether that gets more hp is debatable, but I can't see where it will hurt.

Thanks zaubertuba,

There seems to couple of options, but which one is right to me? Secdem does look pretty good considering the price. I am just wondering the correct hight of the plexiglass.

Regarding orders from USA (or outside EU in general), that will be quite expensive. I ordered a small letter-sized package from the east coast. Let's' say that value of goods were +20 euros, shipping made 35 euros more = 55 euros. Then here I did the customs clearance online and paid the VAT (24%). Total cost 65 euros including small handling fee.

If your order is more than 150 euros (incl. shipping), then you need to pay customs as well (and VAT of course). For motorbike parts custom seems to be 3.7% of the value. This gives you some perspective.

I had a Laminar Lip on my 1985 K100RS. I'm 6' and have C bars. It made an insignificant difference-a waste of my money essentially. I can't offer an opinion on what it would be like for a shorter rider with RS bars.

I had a very generous individual in Idaho offer me his standard size Aeroflow for just the cost of shipping as he never used it. I ended up paying a fraction of what would have been $400 USD with shipping. I was fortunate. It does everything I want it to do-no turbulence, no bugs. It's attached with 3M Dual Locks, so no drilling. I've had my bike north of 100mph many, many times. It hasn't budged at all.

Duck and RS Rider,

Thanks for the different options Very Happy . This german made adjustable windshield could be a good one, but a bit ugly. Maybe not my choice. I compared prices of the SecDem model from Motobins and SecDem. Total price with shipping are following to Finland: Motobins 175 euros (because you need to add VAT 24%, not customs) and SecDem 165 euros (this is VAT included). They are almost the same price. Need to seriously think about it. First I need to get the engine spoiler back from the paint shop. No idea yet, what it will cost.

Anyway, I managed to find voltage regulator for the alternator according to OEM part number. Hitachi -labeled for +10 euros. Let's see if this works better than old Bosch. I could not find any Bosch regulator for convenient price.

Cheers JP

Hi,
I finally got the new regulator (Hüco Hitachi) installed in my bike. On a cold engine voltages are around 13.9-14.1V and on a warm engine 13.5 - 14.0V. On idle voltages are above 12V. Absolutely an improvement. Can't understand why Bosch-branded OEM regulator has such an eye-watering price tag.

I got the belly pan (engine spoiler) back from the paint shop. The shade of red is the same although the picture tells a different story. To me, it looks great. Now I do have more time to focus on the windshield issue.

Many thanks for the valuable tips and information.Very Happy

Good job on the alternator fix. With the higher voltage your heated grips (if you have them) should be slightly warmer.

In case anybody else needs one in the future, what is the part number for the Hitachi voltage regulator?

Mmmm...  That engine spoiler looks good!

Yes, what is the part number for that regulator?

The voltage regulator I found with an OEM part number (12311 4 59286) on several automotive parts pages. OEM number was listed in the reference number list. To be honest, there were many other brands on the list to choose from. When you pick one from the list without knowing is it compatible or not, you have to rely on the given information. It is like doing business blindfolded.

OEM part number gave me also reference to the original part (1 197 311 001). This was listed 44€ + postage. Also, Bosch 1 197 311 090 was on the list for 86€ + postage. Instead, I found Hitachi (part no 130507) at the local automotive parts store for 10-11€. I thought it was worth trying for that price. Time will tell if this was a good choice.

Hi there,
Finally I got my hands on the Secdem windshield. There is at least one motosport dealer in Finland who had this shield on their self. Price wise about the same than from Secdem online store, but I got it in 3 days. First feelings after the test drive on a motorway show that at low speeds (up tp 60-70km/h) the shield reduces wind noise in the helmet remarkably. But faster you drive, the less the shield is useful - noise wise. Here are couple of pictures to show how it fits on the upper fairing.Drilling the holes in the fairing produced a couple of sad tears.

"Sad tears"? Did the Fibron chip around the holes or did the drilling produce cracks?

Not at all, no cracks, no chips. Just a bit sad to destroy beautiful and shiny paint by drilling holes.

Tears fell probably because the upper fairing was a virgin all those years until JiiPee drilled it—a bittersweet right of passage.  Laughing

Got it! In your eyes and not the fairing.

You said it  Very Happy . I could not put my feelings into words. I try to keep the bike as original as possible and therefore visible tuning is not my cup of tea. This time I had to give up my principles. Sacrificed on the altar of ride comfort Laughing .
