Hello, Great to meet you all. I am about to become a 85 K100rt owner in Annapolis. Heading out to pick it up (if it runs as nice as it looks) in a few minutes. Very excited. Never had a BMW. Had honda, kawasaki, harley, suzuki but never a BMW. Will attach pics when it is mine.

 It ran better than it looked! It came home with me. It is an amazingly smooth riding machine! She has some flaws but hey it's a $1000 1985 machine. Tires are good everything seems  to work except the fog lights on the fork. I think it may be the switch as it doesn't feel the same as the other switches. Needs a new battery and has a kinda large spot that needs paint. This is my 1st BMW so am trying to figure it out. It's a different animal. When I can post pics I will.

Ok so now it's time to cry. Went out to mess with the bike. I find now that the dash does not light up and when the button is pushed to start the bike I get nothing. Showing 11v on the gauge. It needs a new Battery which should be here today. the old one was just a little one the guy had on the shelf. Put it in for demo purpose. Guess its time to "dig in". All this worked when we looked at the bike.  I actually was thinking about cutting my losses and buying the one I should have in the first place. Was about to call the gent when I looked on CL and it was gone. So have decided to hang on to this cool old bike and fix her up.

it sounds like you have an old battery that won't hold a charge.  They do go bad, usually after 5 or 6 years.  however, even a new battery will lose it's ability to hold a charge if it sits idle for an extended time.  This is the reason most of these bikes need a battery when they're sold. 

Regardless of how nice it runs, unless the seller shows me receipts for recent service I will plan on a thorough round of maintenance and inspection to prevent embarrassing roadside situations.  Remember, your "new" bike is almost 40 years old.  A complete service is a really good way to get intimately familiar with it.

I am finishing up getting the shed ready with proper lighting so I can see what I am doing. Then I am going to tear into it. New battery should be here today. Install it tonight and go from there. By the time I am done you guys will probably be sick of hearing from me!

Welcome and good luck with your new old bike.Bringing it back to life will be fun . A new battery really helps as does cleaning all the electrical connections and using dielectric grease on them.EuroMotoElectric is a place you should check out.They helped me with all sorts of parts. Have fun !

Got it up and running yesterday. Had a blown fuse. Now i need to figure what blew it. I sure hope that it gets easier to remove the Friggin farings!   I also want to make it nice and shiny like you guys! Will have to get the tank painted. Has a nasty spot where it got welded. May Just go ahead and do all of it. Painter says he can match the paint but I am a little apprehensive. I did some work to it today. Compounded and waxed the paint. Started to clean the casings up some. Looks really nice. next will be checking the splines. Hoping to have her on the road this week. Will post pics when allowed.

Good to hear it's running.  Which fuse blew?

What is the paint code?  It's a 3 digit number on the tail cowl under the seat.  WIth that number we can get the name of the paint color and a BASF automotive paint dealer can mix an exact match for you.  Otherwise you can have a part like a mirror shell or battery cover matched at almost any automotive paint shop.  It won't be exact, but will be close enough that no one will notice.

Fuse number 1 blew. I was told by the previous owner that it was Porsche red. But I will look at the number tomorrow. Love the red.

Fuse #1 on my K75RT is for the heated grips among other things.  Whenever I used them, the fuse would blow because the hot wire to the heater on the throttle grip side had worn insulation from rubbing on the end of the bars when the throttle was twisted. 

As long as you don't use the heated grips it won't be a problem, otherwise, it's not a difficult fix to remove the grip rubber and put some taape on the wire to protect it.
