My bike was parked in a garage in Cape Cod with a flat cement floor. A strong gust of wind came up and pushed my bike off it's properly put up and in good condition center stand.
Can you believe it?
SUCKED!!
3 spots on the fairing damaged and the engine came off at the 2 lower points.

Good side... Althgh it spilled some gas it started right up.

I'm just venting.......

Yep some days just suck.

I put my K100 in the trailer to take it in for a engine number check after I had repainted and replaced the engine and it fell over in the trailer damaging the paint and fairing before I had even riden it, it stayed like that for near 2 years as I felt that fixing it wastempting fate again.

It really hurts when you do the right thing and it still gets damaged by something out of your control.

Thank guys. For the record I meant the "engine guard...", obviously not "the engine."

That said if this happened just after I got it repainted and had the engine replaced I'd be half way through a case of beer by now for sure.....!!!

The reason I started my restoration on the day I did was because I dropped the bike and broke the mirror and scratched the paintwork!

I was only moving it's position in the garage!

Ok since everyone's talking about their bikes falling over, has anyone ever had theirs fall twice (once on each side) within a ten minute time period? How embarrassing is that? I stopped at the intersection across from my garage and somehow fumbling with a garage door opener did not get my right foot down quick enough. Over she went...scraped the right side, mirror etc. A neighbour helped me pick it up. I then pulled into the garage, went to put my left foot down and my boot lace caught in the kickstand. Down again! Will anyone admit to something worse than that?

Yes but we can be on the Guiness record book!..
One that drop its bike twice in 10 min. and the other ignited his engine......Razz
OK, I will tell you what I did...
I had the bike totally repainted and when re-installing the glove boxes, I took the wrong screw(too long) and went right through the fairing. This is why I have a sticker on the side of the fairing. lol!

Apologies to all Canadians! It's not all bad. My wife helped me pick it up in the garage. Up until that time, she wanted to ride with me so we were looking to borrow a helmet for her. Funny thing, she hasn't asked since then. Hmmmm is that good or is that bad?

tis all funny to hear......sad when it happens eh?

i have to reverse out of a quite small entry to my parking place ....with a small deviation along the way (dog leg you might call it ) the day after i forgot to put my side stand down in a car park at the local shoping centre (causing an almighty crash with me and the bike on the ground ....left hand mirror bouncing down the tarmac ) i was really quite carefull about hitting anything with that same mirror i had just repaired on the left hand side ...i clipped the upright of the entry with my right hand mirror ...sending it plummeting towards the floor ...crack ...i could hear the plastic housing opening up ...busted the glass, opened up the glue repair etc .....i was stunned

we have a word for that down here, which i find quite appropriate "bugga"

hoping you all are having a little giggle

Dunno. I like my wife, so I like it when she rides with me. Not everybody feels like that tho... Some would prefer their girlfriend rather than their wife to ride along.

Riding with my wife would be a beautiful thing. This would imply common interest, common friends,....
I have few female friends riders but I would prefer to have my wife sharing my passion.
How nice would it be to go on a ride or a rally with her and meet common friends?... Imagine how this could improve our relationship!
I guess most of us would dream about this.

Mine has her own K75 and likes to come to the rallies. The longer the ride the better. She says that since she got her licence (35 years ago) she much prefers to ride her own bike and not pillion with me. I think my riding style scares the crap out of her.affraid

Wife vs. Girlfriend. Had a wife for 10 years. Now have a girlfriend of 8 years; and yes crazy frog, I mean we've been together for 8 years, not that she is age 8...Wink

The only 2 other times I let my bike fall were when my GF got on a little to harshly & when I put my foot down for control I had hard heeled cowboy boots on and slipped on oil in a parking lot.

I no longer where cowboy boots while riding 2 up.

2 repair questions.

From the fall(s) I would love to learn how to:

1 - repair the mirrors (take apart, re-glue, etc).
2 - repair & rebuild some areas of my fairing

any hints or links out there? Fiberglass repair maybe......

oh - Oil Changes. With modern oil bought at the BMW store how often should I really replace the oil?

try here jr http://k100rt.aforumfree.com/t1628-fiberglass-fairing-repair?highlight=fairing+repair

i too had glued my mirrors back together ....but after a drop event, decided a better way was needed ..i rewelded the plastic using a soldering iron and a donor plasic from an old computer fan ...seems a good match in formula

Wind blew over my 1988 K100LT Pictur17

Wind blew over my 1988 K100LT Pictur16

a bit more finishing was required to smooth out the plastic weldin on the exposed surfaces ...but i left the back of the mirror plastic as you see it ....interesting to note that it is extreemly strong now .

about the oil ...i try to replace the oil about every 5,000 ks (seems a convienient for remembering ) i guess that would be about 3,700 miles

Thanks Charlie. That helps a lot.

and every 3,700 miles makes much more sense. I was told every 1000 miles. i got the bike last November and already have put almost 5000 miles on it. If I changed the oil every 1000 I would have already spent about $300 already just on oil and filters!

Counting the votes I get:
- about 6 in favour of "riding with my wife is a good thing" ( I think so too)
- 0 say it's a bad thing
- several hundred have no opinion, are wives, or are just plain afraid to answer.

I guess that's all the controversy I can create for one day Laughing

Crap. Crap crap crap.
So APPARENTLY when the bike fell it ALSO stressed the fairing enough that although I had 2 large pieces of gaffers tape holding it in place… while I was doing 55mph in heavy traffic on REALLY bad roads over a bridge on the BQE in Brooklyn the glovebox lid flew off. SHITE! It took forever to find the last one and now I can't find one at all; not that I have $40 extra anyways!
I'm considering getting out my trusty Dremel and making one myself out of some "artist" material and adding a freaking hinge.

ugh…. At least my bran new over-priced iPhone and tire gauge and other stuff didn't go flying as well.

crap.

I guess I should also add I'm glad my girlfriend was NOT with me. All I needed was a well placed "I told you so" or "maybe you should have…" to convince me to ride straight off the bridge.

"GOD GRANT ME THE SERENITY
TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CAN NOT CHANGE,
THE COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN,
AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE"

and a cold beer at the end of a long day.

(oh, for the AA guys sorry for the obvious hypocrisy.)

I had to resort to putting a cable tie discretely (or not if you are a purist) through the top end of my glove box covers and into the plastic part of inner fairing. But them I'm a re-known tightwad.
Good luck RT

My wife had one come off the K75 about a year ago and I was thinking of making a tie out of the plastic covered stainless cable that is used for traces on fishing gear. Make just long enough to be able to get it out of the way but long enough to be intrusive. But as usual I have it on the to do list ................still.
