Funny how one thing always leads to another.

Thought i would have a look at why fuel guage wasn't working on saturday, found that it was the little ball float was full of fuel. So once i had repaired that and refitted the tank i noticed a fuel leak at the hose from tank to fuel rail. I decided that i would replace all the fuel lines as they were all original.

Once i had stripped what was needed to get at the regulator i noticed what a nice hot place to mount it, between the air box and intake and behind the radiator. I figured that it would be easier for future maintenance and cooler for it if i mounted it to the l/h frame tube.

I have included some pics of the modification. I'm going to fabricate a fuel cooler to mount to the inner side of the radiator shroud from a powersteer cooler that i have laying around here at work. similar to Bushyintas. Also going to put some MSD cable heat sheild over the hoses to add more insulation to the lines. Also noticed that the little rubber caps over the vacuum ports were split so replaced them as well.

Ok so now i have made and fitted the fuel cooler, i have used a section of power steer cooler and removed the fins from both ends to allow fittings to be silver soldered on.

With 2 x 1/4" bsp brass elbows ready to solder on.

I used 2 x 1/4'' bsp to 5/16'' hose tail fittings screwed into cooler and then used 2 x rubber insulated P clips to mount it to inside of radiator cowl.

Before mounting i cut a slot to suit using a holesaw first and the cutting out with a wafer disc. Placed a piece of mesh over the hole to keep rocks out.

Here it is all mounted up, i had to slot some of my heat sheild covers to allow for the relocation of the fuel line.

I went for a run yesterday in 34degree c temp and the tank felt a lot cooler than before. i didnt check it with a thermometer but its definitley cooler.

Now i know that there are no leaks i will insulate the fuel lines. Now onto the heat blowing on my legs issue.Rolling Eyes

keep in mind that fuel (and anything else under presure ) usually gets hot ...after the regulator the presure is relieved and the temp of the substance comes down markedly ....

yeah i thought about relocating the fpr as well ...vacuume line is cheep as ...and its not the ideal solution to bury it in the hot spots for sure ....but would be perfect for icy weather i guess ....im surmising that where they were made has brought past experience of it icing up ...perhaps ?

I agree charlie, the regulator itself produces heat in its operation. I mainly did the relocation for service reasons. At least if i get a leak on the road its easy to get to. I'm putting the cooler on just to reduce any residual heat in the line, the cooler the fuel going into the engine the more bang it makes. Just a hangover from building high performance cars i guess.

nice thinking ....it think what we were all rabbiting on about before, was that the contents of the tank gets hot durring our summer riding ....and it seems perfectly sound to cool the fuel before putting it back in huh ?

Yeah i read that on one of the posts in here. So it all seemed to kinda make sense in my thinking. Any little bits gotta help hey. We always worked on the theory of the colder the intake air and fuel the more efficiently the combustion process.

I like your work, let us know how it works over the summer months, just went for a 300k cruze with some mates, 32 deg C day, tank felt a lot cooler,no heat felt by my knees ad did before, even cooler than during rides in the cooler months.

32 in Tassie! A veritable heatwave. When I lived there it never got over 31. But that was in the '60s. We were all cooler then.

Yes it was hot, especially on th RT.

rode from Devonport to Shefield, on to Mole Creek, Delorain, westbury, Exceter then back home.

Hot and still, prefer it to be a tad cooler.

Thanks Bushy, must admit i got the idea of the cooler from the one that you made for yours. I was lucky that we had some power steer cooler lines left over here at work.

I have insulated the fuel lines now(thanks Alby for some of the stuff) and also used some of the pipe insulation stuff under the tank. i just laid it in between the frame rails and the tank pushes down on it. I figured any little bit can help.

Haven't been out yet as i spent some of the weekend attending to the water damage that ran thru my shed mid week( we got 300mm of rain in 2 days). Also spent half sunday pulling the pinstripes off the bike that someone thought was attractive. I will do a temp check as soon as i can.
