89 K 100 LT ventilator fan not starting

Hello to all members,

My bike was overhauled one month ago after not being used for a long time. I know that the thermostate had been replaced (not with a new one, but 2nd hand allegedly OK), yet until now I never heard ventilator fan starting. I know it should switch on when the coolant liquid's temperature reaches 100 grad Celsius, but how to test all of this? Once in this period I had to drive in a traffic jam and it was hot weather, so the temperature meter almost reached the red area - and still nothing happened.

Also, my buddy who fixes bikes' electrics would be very happy if someone could tell us at which SIDE of the bike we should look and which parts of the fairing need to be taken off. We just tried with the front grill behind the wheels, and were nothing cleverer after that. So more work is foreseen for this weekend maybe.

After a drive, leave the bike runing on centerstand for 5 - 10 minutes and fan will start (maybe not). I heard mine only few times in ten years. Fan starts at 103 C.

Tarik, have a look at the Portal page. Center bottom you'll find some fault finding info that'll show you (or your mate) how to test.

the temp sensor is on the water stub ...behind the radiator

to get there it is best to remove the right hand side lower fairing ......we have found that often the sensor terminals become corroded and the mating surface from the stub t the sensor becomes corroded ...which sets a false high resitance .,, sometimes a removal of the sensor (19 mm ) and a clean up of the mating threads is required also change the sealing washer between the water stub and sensor .

...but more importantly so do the fan connections ....which i found to be high resistance on my own bike ....again they are accessable from the same lower side cover. but near the top of the rear of the radiator on the air filter side .

might i suggest to open up the contacts of the connector and give it a good clean ...both sides ...socket and plug ..

to test the function of the temperature sensor ...you could ground out the connections comming from the sensor to the temp sensor relay ...(which operates the fan ) the fan should start up ...

Also check that the fan isn`t stucked....not unusual.

Thanks for advices! My mate and me hoped it would also be possible to see if there is a fault, when we connected the bike to the electronic diagnostics system, but no luck - damn unit recognises only later 16 valve models

I had a look and in "You just bought a used K 100, so what now?" (the rest deals with other things), I found only this advice:

Q:My
bike runs hot but the fan and thermostat are working fine.
A: All
K-Bikes run a bit hot, the K1100RS a particular culprit. There is an aftermarket
fan switch a rider can use to make the fan come on sooner and keep the bike cooler.
Fresh coolant will also help.

Did you had something else in mind?

Tarik, in the fault finding you find the schedule/diagram. Under the heading temperature/fan you'll see the relevant part highlighted. Clicking on the 'temp monitoring unit' gets you a schematic that shows how all is connected. You or your mechanic should have sufficient info with that to do some fault finding or look at the ignition trouble shooting page almost at the bottom where it also tells you what resistance from your sensor should be at which temperature.

Having had to replace radiator fans on both of my K bikes I would advise removal of fan and connection to a 12 Volt supply to test. These fans seem to be a weak point on the K bikes.

It's not only that, in other sections here I was sort of giving a diary of how I progressed with putting my bike back on the road after being stored for a long time. So I somehow thought other members may know the story. But not everyone reads everything (me neither too), I should have known better.
