Hi all,

Has anyone ever repaired or made a new screen from perspex?? I'm told that new flat perpex can be laid over and warmed over the old screen to form the shape of the new, to the shape of the old. eh?

An ideas ??

That doesn't sound feasible to me wouldn't the old screen also get out of shape with the heat.
Many years ago (pre fullface) I tried to make a helmet visor with 3mm perspex I managed to get a fairly good shape but had lots of distortion due to a rippling effect. I tried many times because I had a good supply of perspex (free) and never got one good enough to use.

I have seen a coffee table top formed like that. Perspex laid over the table and heated with a hot air gun until it formed over the sides. It worked well. I think you could do it but as K Freak says keeping the old one in shape will be a problem. Lots of low volume Perspex products are formed over a plaster male form. Maybe you could fill the back of your old screen with plaster to give it some rigidity. Optical clarity will no doubt still be a problem.

mmm.. thanks guys, I dont know quite where this is going to go. My fairing is a rickman one I think?? Therefore not easy to find a replacement (unless someone knows otherwise?) My screen suddenly crazed last weekend in the heat after I washed the bike. As did the speedo etc, I have a spare case for the speedo etc but not screen. I'm not sure of the integrity of the screen with the wind buffeting against it if it has weakend it . Maybe your idea of a plaster cast mould might be in for a try out.. we'll see.

Thanks Ian

Hi there, if you shape the new one over the original, you will not get a copy but a mold of the original. To get a copy from the original you´ll have to cast a mold, based on the original, and over that mold then shape the newcopy, the mold can be made of plaster. But as pjjms indicates optical quality may be a problem.
Best regards
JAP

I made some impromptu flip ups for the K and my CX
using a hot air gun ( and my welding gloves !!) with varying results
I overheated the CX one and got a white smudge which wont polish out
as its all the way through the perspex
Luckily it wasnt in an area to affect vision.

They both work in terms of stopping me getting
a face full of wind and the accompanying noise which gets wearing on long rides.
Crude but effective is probably the best description.

I found getting the perspex to its malleable/workable point but not going past it
and getting the white smudging the tricky bit.
this was with much smaller areas than anything screen sized.

If I fancied trying my arm at something screen sized I think
Id make templates from paper or card and cut the perspex to shape
If I got that far without messing up I'd then try shaping it by hand and trying to keep
bends as simple as possible.

I reckon its possible to make something if you're prepared to experiment Very Happy

BTW I call it perspex'' but I was told there are various kinds of clear sheet
and I have no idea what it was, as I found it lying about and appropriated it

there is also Polycarbonate , which can be bent in any manner without heat and not many problems, as reg_ says if you're prepared to experiment, polycarbonate is your best bet.
Can be pricey though.

crack which I have hidden with a tax disc holder. did you ever find a new one or manage to replicate a copy?

I have a Lamar lip that I had to change the shape of, I used a heat gun and warmed it till it turned a slight milky shade, then it formed very easy, be careful that you don't leave a finger print like I did.
