looked at bikebandit and a replacement gear shift lever is $155.00, ther must be an alternate solution. Can someone advice what they may have done in the past or am I the first cheap bastard to break one. 
Reason for replacement was an easy low-side lay down in a grassy field. bike did very well considering and I was un harmed.

I broke mine while removing otherwise you could have had it.
It snapped across the shaft clamp on the other side of the lock bolt.
It may have already been damaged perhaps.

Im luck as I had already ordered rearsets.

I think its worth keeping a spare gear shift and handle bar lever tucked away somewhere. They are generaly the thing to stop you riding home if the bike goes down. When my RT was hit the last time gear lever got broken.

Stopped on way back last night to help a guy who was sideswiped by a car driver who neither signalled nor looked and came off. Bike not too bad, ankle broken, gear shift broken meaning his friend couldn't ride the bike home for him.

Interested to see how this is resolved. I am actually contemplating modification of mine. Bike is new to me and doesn't really work well with my size 14 foot in a riding boot. If I find a cheaper used one first I will be able to experiment with lengthening it depending on the quality of the metal used.

If lengthening doesn't work, I will probably fabricate a new one that suits me better. I'll take lots of pictures if I go that route.

Quite a lot of the Hondas from 70s and 80s have the same spline and are steel so can be welded easily.

I bought one to suit a honda off road bike, 13mm spline from memory from the local bike accessory shop. Alloy with folding toe piece.

Hi All,

Sorry for reviving a dead post but I cant seem to find much info on this. During my restoration, I tried to shift into a high gear with my hand so I could turn the rear wheel to make sure the engine isn't locked. With about 15 lbs of pressure, IK snapped the shift lever off in my hand... perfect....

Turns out the PO was a board certified JB welder.

Has anyone found an aftermarket aluminum shifter that they have experience with on a K100?

This one off a K1100 will work.  I put one on a K100RS.  Sticks out a quarter inch or so further than the earlier shifter, but doesn't cause any problems.

Yes. The K1100 shift lever works fine BUT:

1 - It has a bend in the middle that may hit your foot. (K1100 peg plates are a bit farther out so it's not an issue on those bikes like it can be on 2V K bikes.)

2 - It has a thinner round tip so if you ride long days or shift a lot then it's a bit harder on your left toe knuckle.
