Hi, everyone. Just got a 1987 k100lt in need of alot of work. I've always wanted a fuel injected bike, tired of cleaning the carbs on my other bikes every spring. I know, I just kept forgetting the stybil. I've had older goldwings, and just rebuilt a 1986 VT1100, thought I would like the cruiser style, hanging around too many harley guys I guess. I hate it! Way to much vibration for my tastes. So, I wanted a sport tourer, fuel injected,
1000cc or up, two riding with no problems, but did not want to spend alot. Got a fixer upper K for 600.00. Runs, but has been left outside for years. I'm tearing her down, and starting fresh. I did ride her around the yard, and first thing I noticed, No vibrations, and lots of smooth power! Will try to post back with my progess, but this is at least a year long project. Going to convert some things over to a K1100 style, like the lower fairings and the power windshield. Wish me Luck!cheers

Congrats on the purchase. I have had an LT for 3 years and recently acquired a 1984 K100RT.

Long distance, two up, buckets of torque, great to ride and very comfortable on the back too. The vibrations are an interesting issue. Some will vibrate around 4,000rpm which is at 60mph/100kph. My LT did it and the RT does it.  But on the RT it is only there between about 3700 and 4300 so I will investigate more. Elsewhere in the range it is silky smooth. They must be good because my son keeps saying he would never buy one but he sure is intent on 'borrowing' it. If you find you don't have any vibration mind the bike good.

There is a section on the portal 'you have just bought a K100' and its really good with what to do. Whatever you do don't fire her up until you have cleaned out gas tank and any old gas left in it. Also, everyone here is very very helpful and sociable so don't be afraid to ask for anything. Some of the guys swap parts, technical get togethers and more. A few of the members do things like injector refurbs, if you need parts they will point you in the right direction and sometimes when you need something someone else has it.

A few meet ups are nice too, sus out some K owners near to you.

Things like the K1100 conversions have been done by others so someone already knows the pitfalls and the parts that swap easily.

We love photos here. Bike pics and places you go on the K.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the very good price you found on a bike that actually runs! That will significantly reduce the expense in getting it back to the way you want it.

I think it could be a benefit to many of us on the forum if during your adventure you are able to:

#1 take detail photos all along the path back to new (or nice) and
#2 track every penny of expenditure that you made throughout the project for parts, tooling and outside services that you may require during the refit.

I have long maintained that it's far less expensive to buy one that's already done than it is to redo one.

Some people are more interested in the process rather than the cost.
I don't fault anyone who just wants a 4 -6 month hobby to fill their time.

From my personal experience.......I'll try to buy the next one that's all ready to ride.

Please let us know if you care to track the entire story to share with everyone.

Your first challenge (as like many other newbies before you) is learning the steps to post a photo.

Thanks & good luck, Ibjman

Hi there Blade, sounds like a gangster,Very Happy
getting a bike that needs a total nut and bolt restoration is a good way of getting to know the bike at a personal level but as Ibj says it can cost heaps and that is why I dont keep track.
I built a 34ft steel yacht many years ago and wrote everything down and it got to the OMG how did I manage to spend that much stage.
All the best and lots of luck for the restoration and do keep us posted on the progress.

Thanks everyone for the great welcome. This rebuild is more for the journey, than the destination. I will keep the forum updated on my progress.

Hi GWB (Gold Wing Blade, not G.W.Bush).
The best thing that could happen to that Brick was to find a new owner like you, willing to spend-some bucks and time to rejuvenate it.
Good luck on that journey.

Welcome to the forum GWB, good to have another Virginian on board. Your gonna love that K. Just returned from a 1200 mi round trip to CT running
I-81 with both needles at high noon and passing 18 wheelers at about 2 oclock. Hard to believe that my K is almost 30 years old. It pulled those hills in PA like nothin. And if you are anywhere near the Blue Ridge Parkway you'll love the way it handles the twisties. If your anywhere near Roanoke send me a PM (personal message). Maybe we can grab a coffee and compare notes. Great bunch of guys here and my bike is on the road thanks to their input.

See you on the road!

Thanks ironbutt, it will be awhile before shes on the road, but it sounds like i made the right decision buying this bike.  The more i take apart the more i want to upgrade. I might just get it together, see how she runs, then upgrade later. Ridng the parkway is great with the right bike, scary with the wrong one. Will get in touch with you when she's ready. Use to ride out to Salem for the Goldwing rallies, beautiful country out there.

Beemer Wheeler,....
I like your sense of humor and agree with you about how lucky the bike is.
Buying an old bike may save money at the time of the transaction, but in the long run it could be expensive(Don`t ask me how I know that). After the restoration, you get a lot of pride about your accomplishment, have a lot of expertise and enjoy the bike better than a new one. Money can buy anything. Passion and hard work always rewards you with joy and happiness.
Good luck with your project goldwingblade. We will happily assist you when needed.

Thanks Crazy,  you're right, I'm more happy tinkering and building the bike almost as much as riding. The bike is down to the bare frame, and i'm collecting the k1100 body panels and electric windshield to upgrade it. Will post pics when i get a little more done.

I've got the full set barring one mirror, not much use to you at the other end of the world though.
