I think i'm starting a collection. I went out and got a K1100lt today. Think I did ok on it got 104000 miles on it and it looks to be in fairly good shape. But here's what I think I might do-since my k75s is real close to the same color, and it is in pretty bad shape- I was thinking about taking the faring and putting on the 1100. I think that the 1100 would make a nice sport bike. I'm wondering if any of you folks has tried this. I'm sure it will take some modification here and there, but that ain't no big deal.

A member of the BMWMCQ put a K75s fairing on a K100, he said at the time it was pretty straight forward. Then proceeded to polish the engine with Sunlight soap and stainless steel wool that was probably 15 years or so ago.

Putting a K75S fairing on a K100?

1 - The K75 tank is narrower. Did he swap tanks?

2 - The K75S fairing is meant to work with a K75 frame and radiator. I wonder how he tackled that. The K75 radiator is smaller and the front of the K75 frame is more angled due to the "missing" cylinder.

3 - Looks like a K100 belly pan.  (I know you can adapt a K75 belly pan because I did on my K100.)

Geez Duck you are straining my brain cells it was at least 15 years ago could be more. From what I can remember he got the complete fairing possibly from a bike wreckers along with everything he required to do the conversion, I remember that it cost him a good sized lump of cash. If you look at the only picture that I was able to find the tank looks to be the same colour as the rest of the bike the fairing and belly pan looks to be a different colour. When I saw it last it was all painted silver, and there was no gaps between the tank and the fairing. If you didn't know any better you'd think it was OEM. With my 75 the fairing support spider bolts to the steering head so the front frame rails shouldn't be a concern. It might be possible to contact the BMWMCQ and see if he and the bike are still members, I'm sorry I can't even remember his name. I was just musing about how that could be done.  Not expecting you to have all of the answers.

The thing about the radiator and frame is the angle of the frame pieces that go from the steering head to the front of the motor and the radiator size.  If you try to put a standard K75 radiator surround on a K100 it simply won't work so I wonder how one could get the bottom of a K75S faring to fit on a K100.

Since the K75RT has an adapted K100RT fairing the K75RT uses the larger K100 radiator and tank as well as having a piece at the bottom that pushes the bottom of the radiator out from the K75 frame to make up for the "missing" front cylinder.  #7

Well I guess there's only one way to find out. Good to hear about the belly pan though that was the one thing I wasnt too sure about. As for the radiator surround, that bolts to the fairing and I was thinking IF the fairing will fit around the tank that I might be able to rework the brackets from the frame, but I won't know until I start doing it. I'll keep you posted though.

I'm sure everyone has seen where the fairing was cut away to clear the coolant hose rising from the pump to the radiator. 

If you look close, you can see where the bottom edge of the fairing in front of the radiator was cut away to clear the timing chain cover.  I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't more fairing cut away around the radiator.

Closer inspection reveals that the fairing was also cut away around the radiator grille to clear the radiator, the bar between the two openings looks a lot thinner than on my K75S.  I can't tell from the photo, but I'd be wiling to bet the grille is not there anymore.

I agree with .75 that it looks like the inside of the radiator panel looks like it's been trimmed.

To put a K75 belly pan on a K100:

Use the front engine mounting bracket from a K75 and drill some new holes in the belly pan to line up with that bracket: #15

The OP is intending to install these items on a K1100 rather than a K100, if that would make any difference at all. He seems up for the challenge regardless.

.75 from memory I believe the mesh was still in place but possibly modified.

Duck, I see in your signature that you took a k75 belly pan and put on a k100. Did you use the k75 brackets?  It looks like the 1100 block has provisions for the front k75 bracket. I'm wondering if the 4v block is close enough to make the belly pan work?

See my post #9 above.  The oil sumps are the same so using the K75 front bracket on a K1100 motor shouldn't be an issue.

I took the lowers off and I held the belly pan up. It looks like ot will fit with some modifications-big surprise Rolling Eyes. The holes for the front bracket look to be off by about 2-3 inches, and the sight glass will be covered. But I think that is to be expected due to the fact that it's off a triple. Just gotta figure out the rear. Haven't got the upper off yet so that will be another story!

How do the clocks work on the K75S?

On my K100 they are bar mounted and rotate with the bars.

On my K1100 they are fairing mounted and do not rotate with the bars. I guess this is how it would have to be done, not sure what spider bracket is used with K75S fairing...is it the RT spider bracket? If so then I suspect a K1100 spider bracket needed but not sure oft he bolt mount points.

Cluster is fixed on a K75S.  It sits in the main fairing bracket off of the steering head. The bracket is unique to the K75S and unfortunately is made of plastic so that the cluster, headlight and fairing bounce around a bit while riding.

The cluster counterweight (or whatever you choose to call it) is the same as for other Ks with a fixed cluster. (K1100LT, K100RT/LT, K75RT)

Apparently the bolts that attach the spider sometimes loosen off which contributes to the bounce. A few owners have used blue Loctite to stop the bolts loosening. My fairing is tight and the spider has never been off I do however have a slight jiggle of the instrument pod.

Interesting observation.  I noticed in my car's rear view mirror that the fairing on the dead K75S I bought a few weeks ago was bouncing around quite a bit when trailering it home.  When it warms up enough here for me to start working on the bike I'll be sure to tighten and Loctite those bolts to the steering head.
