Thought I'd share this idea with you.

Centre stand lock Ssl10717

An angle bracket bolted to the centre stand mounting.

Centre stand lock Ssl10718

A lug welded to the centre stand and a padlock.
It's more substantial than the steering lock, less bulk to carry than a chain, you can't ride off with the lock in place (ref; disc lock) and you can't nudge the bike off the stand when parked.
I originally did it to stop the bike falling over on cross channel ferries.
Paul.

Simplicity itself! A very neat design Paul, I like it.
I'll be removing my stand for overhaul soon and will replicate that when putting it back together.

One of the techie K75 rider in Halifax came with the same idea but not for the purpose of an anti theft device. The purpose of it is to park the bike in any position (particularly downward on a hill) and avoid that somebody bump it and crash it.
In stead of a padlock, there is a spring loaded pin going into the lug.
How does he pulls the pin out?
He attached a steel cable to the folding handle used to lift the bike on the centre stand. When he unfold the handle, the cable activate a lever retracting the locking pin and freeing the centre stand.

Quite a cleaver system. Centre stand lock 112350

That is very ingenious indeed and a great idea. I had a friend whose bike got dumped on the ground because some idiot parking a car gave it a small nudge which rolled it off the stand and it crashed over. I couldn't believe the idiot in the car was protesting "it's not my fault I hardly touched it, it just fell over", GRRR.

I had my K1200S on the 'accessory' main stand in a full-sized space in a car park in Tacoma one sunny arvo several years ago. A woman in a Ford Exploder reversed into the space and knocked it over on the right hand side, causing some significant damage - all that plastic! She and her male partner got out and he picked up the bike (damaging it still more) and then proceeded to enter every restaurant and shop along the Commencement Bay waterfront looking for the owner. I was a mile away walking along enjoying the view and the sunny day - a rarity in Autumn in Washington state, as I recall. When I returned she was still there nervously biting her nails and eager to offer her details and credentials for insurance purposes. She was genuinely sorry. Next day I got an estimate at the BMW shop that employed me as parts manager. A week later I had an insurance company cheque (check) for the damages at retail. I bought the parts at dealer cost and fixed up the bike to as-new condition. That scratch from the last prang no longer an unsightly issue. Sorry if it raised your rates worldwide, but it wasn't my fault. Wink

OG pm'ed me with a request for more details of the bracket. After composing a paragraph of description, I gave up, took the bracket off the bike and photographed it. 1.5"x 1.5" steel angle as material.

Tonight I saw the 'techie' with his K75 and took few pictures of the locking mechanism. This is not pin locking the center stand but more a cam. The cable is activated by the retractable lifting handle.

Does this work by blocking the centre stand when the handle is down???? As in you stand on the centrestand pedal and lift with the lifting handle bike comes up on stand you let go of handle and it drops down to normal position sticking the cam out in front of the centre stands leg so it wont move back up under the bike???? (He say's somewhat unsure he's explained himself)

Yes this is how it works. When you lift the handle it releases the cam.
Before building this device, when the friend was on the ferry, he just strapped the center stand to the front wheel with a the type of ratchet strap. Easy and efficient. the bike could never move. Very Happy

Excellent idea Paul, but I have to ask.

Did you also make that padlock?

Actually thinking about it I am sure you didn't. Looks like it is made from Play Doh.

No rosskk(k)o, I didn't make that one, I just covered it with self-amalgamating tape to prevent it from scratching the inside of the pannier or seat tail.

I have made a padlock though. Very Happy

Barring that a detailed, scaled engineer-type template available for downloading.

This is one of those 'simple' projects that would bring failure, physical and psychological harm to myself and worse, decimate my weekend.
