Saying that it would be a fun ride though.

The dopey buggers even do it to Z1300 Kawasakis. Like they are the ideal bike to make super light.

About the only thing I haven't seen made into a cafe racer is a Goldwing

Was looking at a Gold Wing cafe racer online last night.
Not a pretty sight.
Although, they were endurance raced in the 70's with modest success. Seem to remember Dresda(?) did a frame kit for them.
One of the columnists in last month's MSL commented that old tourers never die, they turn into cafe racers.

Maybe it's the urge to take something to bits and put your own stamp on it. Let's call it the Meccano Effect.

tyranny of distance for us in the lower half of the world mossy

there is soo much difference in the purchase price of old bikes and parts to those in the uk for example

but if you have the bug ...why not explore ??

Yes, a proper build eats up the cash very quick.

That *thing* keeps doing the rounds but so far everyone has done the sensible thing and kept away. It's appeared on ebay too, along with it's equally unloved and cruddy brother.

Did you blokes in the UK not get that influx of low mileage Japanese imports a while back? When I paid $6500 for my '93 with 120,000km on it, I could have bought an 85 wlth 20,000km on it for half that. My way of thinking was, if I buy a bike that's done 1000km per year for the last 17yrs and start doing 1000km per month, something's gotta give. I know people who have bought the imports with some good results, some bad. 
I try to buy old bikes cheap and do them up, and I know how easy it is to put more money into something than it will ever be worth, but then you see people buying $15,000 GB400s from Deus. Each to their own.
I think the stand out problem for me with this bike is the bar end mirrors! They will either get smashed clipping a tree, or crushed the first time it gets dropped. I think the price is a bit high as well.

A very nice looking k100rs just sold on auction here for 2k nzd. It had 36000km on the clock. Maybe there is a price difference here for bricks.
