think I found my intermittent high beam issue this morning

the terminal looks to be dry joint to the cable

a quick high temperature solder job seems to have fixed it after a good clean up of the terminal



meanwhile time for a new front type I recon
another 20,000 k done and dusted ....guess its my 6 th front ...including  those rotten dunlops that it came with ...euww  and a short spell with a radial on the front



was pushing through corners yesterday ...yucky

should be able to get at least another 5k from that one Charlie , just put some more lean into it.

blasted broke off the screw retainer on the high beam switch

but just as well I did

erroded switch plates and regressing connection post






after a bit of work and my spare switch assembly showing less signs of ware





and a little polish up of the plates ....


see if this goes together well

seems my prediction of a bearing has come forward to bite me

this evening lost all drive to poor old gerty

recon its a gearbox bearing ....fortunately have a spare at hand ...almost ready to go

that will teach me to procrastinate .....and to get my finger out and do some stuff

no its not a driveshaft or rear splines issue ...but something more broken

I can rotate the rear wheel ...and feel the driveshaft turning the uni joint and output shaft no issues

but recon its a bearing in the gearbox .. as the noise is pretty distinctive and locatable  to deep in there ...

clutch control is still active ..so plate and spline should be good  

so a real early start for this old fella tomorrow morning ...pity the sun comes up a good hour later this time of year

do a gearbox swap ...then get to work


sheesh ...life is a challenge ...car is still off the road so gerty is it  till sunday when I can throw the engine back together in the car  (forgot that Anzac day shops are closed and needed some wire to compress the cam tensioner (whilst fitting ))


got a spare (new ) clutch lever - rod bellows  (good investment that ) to replace the torn one on the spare gearbox from marky boy last year thanks mate ...really appreciated that contribution

Tough luck, Chazza. Good thing there's a spares source among mates. If it gets worse for you I've a known '87 gearbox just sitting on a shelf awaiting its next task. It's a silver one, too!

looking like clutch splines .

just drained the oil out of the gearbox ,,,,was playing on my mind a bit there

oil appears clean and no fragments of metal that I can see at all

which is a real bugga ... don't have a new one around the place ...just oil contaminated oldies ...lets see what  I can figure out !

Hopefully it will only be the splines in the plate. When my 1150RT did the same, it took out the input shaft splines and input bearing, so the whole gearbox had to come apart.

ill measure up the two old ones i have , to see the better plate thicknesses  and spline deteriorations

likely change the box regardless

fingers crossed I can remove the gpi switch and swap that over as well  (the 83-84 box has a different connector  with flat blades rather than the round pins  )  but expect to find some resistance in the attaching screws .

I do have a spare gear set here , cant remember seeing the input shaft though ...but ill have a dig around in the spares boxes when it gets light enough

I have a new clutch plate here if you need it on a replacement basis I can drop it down tomorrow, need to go for a ride.

still fighting to get the pressure plate assembly apart ....but getting there slowly, now those rotten short socket bolts are off

you recon that the ones I have are cactus ?

If they are oil soaked then most likely they will give trouble. You may have some success giving them a bath in the carb and throttle body cleaner then metho and burn them off. That will give them some life.

interesting to note   there seems to be far less rumble at idle and far les whine whilst on the road

removed some very milky trans fluid after the first start ...and refilled with the clear old oil from the other gearbox
perhaps this could improve some more as the gearbox gets some fluid in all the right places  after years of no service ..id guess

another interesting thing ...the drain plug is ever so slightly ...in a different position in relation to the centre stand bracket - mount frame

the drain plug interferes with that bracket on the way out ....perhaps I could reposition the centre stand just a little bit ? it an early model g/box   um 84 ?

thought I had a failed second gear dogs at first ...but has improved marked ly after a few times up and down through the gears ....phew    !!! 
its been hot round here today ...not one for mechanicing really ...   time for a few cold ales

Another job you can tick off... well done.

Looks like you fell foul of the water a few years back and got the grease washed out. Shes been dry for a while by the looks of the rusty colour.

must get one of them inspection camera do hicky things to do an inspection periodically  eh ?

perhaps a rubber bung in the bottom of the drain hole might help as well ?

thinking that breather in the front of gearbox top  could do with an extension ...up to somewhere less likely to be in the line of water spray ?

I don't know Charlie seems logical to me after all you've been into a few KRR river crossings most up to the cam cover, or a tad higher and well that's plenty of water from where I'm sitting
