I live in Medway, Kent. Post your bike info and problems you're experiencing as suggested.

sorry thought I hats an 83 (B) k100. the problems are intermittent dash lights. no tail light and assorted other quirky issues. basically I need someone who knows the wiring on there to sort it for me (for reasonable remuneration of course).

As the starter motor provides an earth run, dirty or worn brushes can cause all sorts of electrical issues. It's a simple job to remove the starter and check/clean the commutator and replace the brushes if needed.

What Mike says - search 'starter motor' on the forum.

Hello!

What I would suggest:

1.) could be a mass problem.
Solution
= check the connection at the battery
= check the mass cable at the left side of the bike, connecting to the gear box.

2.) still a mass issue the starter coals a bad, this is a we'll know issue that results in many electric issues as you write!
Solution
= take the starter out and replace with a well known used one
= better, buy a starter brushes sett and refurbish the starter

All easy stuff to do

You will find a how to here in the forum or just ask

Cheers

I think BMW sell the brush kit but the fastest way to get the BMW  parts is probably www.motorworks.co.uk or www.motobins.co.uk

Its not an expensive item and is a diy fit. Only 2 bolts holding the starter in place but can take a bit of wriggling to get it out because of the O ring.

in addition to Chocolate's links...
http://www.james-sherlock.co.uk/shop/k75-k100-k1100-k1200/engine-electrics-283/starter-motor-287/starter-motor-brush-kit-detail

When buying spares (in UK), I tend to look at James Sherlock, Motobins and Motorworks and compare stock availability and price. Some things are cheaper on one site and other things are cheaper on one of the others - in this case, it looks like buying the positive and negative bits separate from Motorworks is cheaper (by about £7) than James Sherlock's kit (which seems to have the same bits, but packaged together in a kit).

Always good to shop around and keep them competitive - in terms of service, i have always had very good service from all three.

Google backspin starter, it can work as a fix. But at least check your brushes if it works.
Regards Martin.

If you replace the brushes yourself be sure to mark the starter housing and end caps for position before disassembly.  Putting the parts back together in the wrong orientation can cause the starter to spin the wrong direction.  It's not hard to do, I just put one mark on one end cap with another mark on the main body next to it.  I do the same on the other end cap but use two marks.
