Well, just as things are running smoothly on the RT, for some reason I was on my hands and knees checking the engine number and spotted this.
Mysterious Hole in Crankcase P3040010
Turn your computer to the right, this is on the right hand side near the junction of gear box and crankcase.

My simple question is WTF? is going on. Anyone seen this before. Needless to say, my slight oil loss my have just been solved. How the hell do I fix this? chewing gum, gasket goo?
Thanks in expectation.

What makes you think the hole is mysterious?

I can see it plain as day. It is a hole. Nothing mysterious about it.
Unless a wabbit comes out.

I will have a look on the engines I have here and get back but I have a feeling that it is ok and quite possibly just a bolt hole that has been drilled just a touch too far before it was tapped for the thread. I wouldn't be overly concerned about it.

looks like a sump cover bolt lost ......shouldnt cause a big issue ,,unless you have a lot of oil around that junction as the sealant would probably keep it free from leaks ,,,,,

but maybe would be wise to check the etk for the correct size-length to replace it ????

just an opinion

k blakey i get what you mean

looks like a slight bubble in the casting to me ......sounds like an acetone to clean it up and a bit of liquid metal to make it apear to be ...erm ...solid ...

but the missing bolt above is of some concern

heres a blurry pic of how mine is ......its dark outside ...and wet

Mysterious Hole in Crankcase 2013-032

Mysterious Hole in Crankcase 2013-033

looks about 6mm x 20 - 25mm to me .....if this was missing there could be a little weep out of there ...maybe ?

but looks as though you crank cover seal rubbers has started to loose the seal bob

maybe replace that seal ./....and the rubbers for the retaining bolts ( they loose presure over the years ) or run some "good sealant " over the crankcase seal ...wait for it to go off then put the crank cover back on ???

just some thoughts after my leak events recently

looks like an allen/hex screw ...wack one in see if it takes up..could be that hole was caused through rough handling removing or fitting that bolt.

Tks everyone, there is a small amount of oil there, maybe Charlie is right, coming from the crankcase seal. Just another job.
To be honest I thought that bolt hole was where the lower fairing bolt was located, I think I have something that will go in there.

Just goes to show you should get a magnifying glass out when you are bored and give it a once over.

When I replace that seal, do I have to use sealant goo or does the seal seal without sealant.
Whoops dubbled up.

bob if you are fixing that seal just remember the rubber becomes hard over time and doesnt seal as well as it did when it was young .

sure you will be able to refit it and it will service well for a few more years ...maybe ..or put some silicon sealant around the whole lot to take up the low presures ..( which i did )

but the bolts that you undo to get the cover off have a rubber gromit for want of a better word ...around the head of those bolts ...it compresses over time ...and they are the cause for some of my leak issues when i did my camchain recently ,,,they just dont put enough presure on the outer seals any more

you might find that getting some new ones will help dramatically they dont cost a lot but there are many if you take the head cover into account as well ......

what did we count blakey ? 20 something of them for both sides *22 total *

cheers mate

Ok, looking for those "grommet" things of which you speak. Can't see them listed in Munich Motorcycle's site, how did you get a hold of them Charlie? is there a special name for them. ( I just felt a cold shiver as Inge let out a scream of exasperation).
The crankcase gasket seems cheap enough from them and will get here Monday if I can order it all. (means I will have it fixed by Easter if I,m lucky.

I was impressed that Blakey came up with the numbers, but it is a general thank you.
There are a few of us who live a bit isolated from the rest, and this forum makes it easier to control the destructive urges that come after fiddling for hours getting no where.

I'm sure this is not an issue.....it was simply one of the bolt holes from the rear housing adaptor that was drilled a shade to far at original mfg. see my pics. the screwdriver shows that mine was also drilled almost through in that area. since the other side of this "hole" is into the rear threaded bolt hole area, it does no harm (unless you are worried about road salts & water getting in through that hole and rusting up the rear facing bolt threads. In that case, just block it with a dab of some sealer. No worries, nothing will be leaking outward from that hole.
Here's a pic of an old spare I have (1985 K100RT). You can have it for free if you want to pay to ship it from the USA.
