Not the pic I was aiming for , would have liked to put a bit more of a ride in front of me to achieve this challenge.
but this was giving me some inspiration for an upcoming project which will be shared with all later . 
Weather was a bit hazy and overcast , but still a top spot to admire the surrounds of Newcastle.
There are several unique locations around this city which offer views to the ocean , country and city scape. which are even better on a summers night.
BTW , I still have no idea what this marker represents. 
there is a memorial plinth close by suggesting a local family owned a vast area of this suburb .




so the challenge will be to find a unique marker on a hill with inspiring views. bring it on people .
even better with a Kluster of K riders in the pic.

Good challenge - plenty of wacky monuments/edifices at view points to choose from. 

I've been trying to work out what yours is. Do you have a map location? I've tried looking on google earth...but it a small blip in a large area and I couldn't home in on where the photo was taken. My first thought was it is a navigational marker/transit/head mark (although it doesn't look like it is high enough) - does it have any lighting or is it just a plain black disc? There seem to be a lot of head marks scattered along the edge of the Hunter river.

A triangulation station, also known as a triangulation pillar, trigonometrical station, trigonometrical point, trig station, trig beacon or trig point, and sometimes informally as a trig, is a fixed surveying station, used in geodetic surveying and other surveying projects in its vicinity. The names of triangulation stations vary regionally; they are generally known as trigonometrical stations in North America, trig points in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, trig stations or points in Australia,^[1] and trig beacons in South Africa; triangulation pillar is the more formal term for the concrete columns found in the UK.


Bill

This obelisk, while technically not a trig station, it is a navigational marker and is located atop the highest point in Newcastle NSW. Obelisks are usually erected as a monument but this on was not. It was built to replace an old windmill in 1847.
This is as close as I could get to get both in view.

well done Kaptain , mine was taken just 2 weeks ago . spent a couple of hours up there after work watching ships come into the harbour. some nice buildings in the locality.
It was peaceful just watching hanggliders hovering above the beach and looking out across the mouth of the port and lighthouse.

Also are you aware of the All German Show and Shine being held at the Newcastle Foreshore this weekend? Not sure if bikes are included . 
Been haggling with the organiser , but no confirmation.

Its an interesting spot Ed, with quite a bit of history.

That other Trig site you posted is Braye Park just a few klm from me. I go for a walk up there a couple of times a week at sunrise.

The next challenge will be a piece of modern abstract public sculpture. This one is on the Esplanade at Nobby's Beach Newcastle.

The sculpture is a reminder of the Pasher Bulker ( storms of April 2007) , enjoy taking my family to Newcastle beaches whenever we can . I'll be down there on Saturday morning on the K.

Weather permitting , I wouldn't mind a quick run up to the RAAF at Williamtown. They have a cafe there too.

With a little know how help from Kaptain Hollister , we shared this K pic with the lunchtime crowds at the Honeysuckle Precinct, the new social scene in Newcastle .
I've ridden past these things on many occasions, even stopping to use the Newcastle Harbour backdrop for pics , but never knew what these were for .

Good to hear this challenge is keeping a few of you on the edge of your seats. 
The challenge I have in mind was to be executed at the Snowy gathering , however distractions got in the way , and didn't eventuate. sorry people .
This was a good thing though , as it happened our fellow krew member ,BAE advised of his upcoming visit to Oz . 
 Putting things into perspective I have given Paul an insight as to the next challenge for when he arrives, hope we can pull it off and post up a top challenge.

The edge of my seat, I'm in danger of falling of as I go to sleep. Two months between post and challenge is far too long. Two maybe three days, maybe even a week if something really special is in the pipe line but not 2 months.

Apologies Ed, I like your intention but .... ?

...a suggestion.... I know we don't like rules but how about IF the challenge winner does not post a new challenge within 7 days, the previous challenge is open again, unless said challenge winner can manage to get his new challenge up first.
So in this case, my previous challenge a piece of modern abstract public sculpture is open again, unless Ed can get his new challenge up before someone responds.
That way it will keep moving along at a better pace. Just a thought.

My thoughts on it are that I have something specific in mind for a challenge but unless I can get a reply post in and then the challenge I have in mind within a few days then there is little point in doing a reply post. In around 500 posts and quite likely 100 different subjects I have tried many times but been beaten to it and only once managed to get a new challenge in and it isn't for a lack of trying.
But the aim is go for a ride to get both photos and I have done it many times.

Art it is , keen to see something Kreative .

I have to agree. By producing a photo to set the next challenge it validates the task as do-able. Otherwise we could unintentionally get imaginative challenges that are too difficult imo.

Also while we're at it, I'm not sure the 30 day rule is really workable. Anyone can set a challenge without having actually completed one.... Sorry Bert     but I think Rick needs to have a say in this... he instigated the game and has been its unofficial moderator from the start. Just my thoughts.... anyone else want to throw their 2c worth in??

My 2c........it needs a picture of a K with the challenge and the reply. We all love pictures, it's what makes this thread so brilliant.

The concept of the game is to get out and go for a ride. What I would like to have is that when someone meets the challenge they have 7 days to post the new challenge. If they cant or don't for whatever reason then any one can meet the original challenge and post a new one but that should be done within 1 day (any time saturday to any time sunday would be quite acceptable).
I appreciate that Ed was trying to do something imaginative and unusual but I really do think it is reasonable to let the thread keep going.
I have been involved with other fora with this game and that is usually the rule of thumb.

Now lets go for a ride -o:

I love this game and look forward to new postings, it is even better if I can get into the mix as well! 
For me, part of the attraction is seeing the worldwide pictures so I am with the Kaptain and Sidecar Paul that the next challenge has to be set off with a picture of a K by the object of the new challenge. 
I am also with Rick that this should be kept fast moving and simple and that if the challenge is won then the 'winner' has no more than 7 days (although, measured by which time zone could be interesting...) to post the new challenge.  It could be made even simpler in that the challenge is not won until you post the picture of your K alongside the prior object and a second picture by the new object! This would stay true to the simplicity of Rick's original concept. It would also sort out the disappointment for those who have been out and collected both images and then found out that someone got in first by capturing the prior object only. 

Sun is now regularly coming out in the Northern Hemisphere and the K is fettled ready to roll. Art identified, it is now a question of getting there!  Come on guys, get riding!

Looks like we are all in violent agreement on how to keep this game moving. I totally agree with Nigel about the challenge not being won until both pics are posted. Setting any time scale just bogs things down. If member(s) wish to challenge the challenge (i.e. they consider the challenge pic and/or the new challenge pic do not meet the basic rules - e.g. no K in the shot), then they need to do it quickly before a new set of pics are posted and the game moves on.

As a fairly regular contributor to the challenge, when I see a challenge that I think I can get, I plan a ride to capture both the challenge pic and the new challenge pic on the same outing. This actually makes for some interesting rides (aka the concept of the game) and has taken me to some out of the way places that I would never have otherwise ridden to. It also makes you think harder about where to get both pics, although on occasion, you can chance upon something unplanned which replaces your original ideas (like a K with a breakdown truck!!  ). After having done this a few times, I now actually plan a couple of options for both the challenge pics - sometimes, you just can't get the bike close enough to the new object or, when you get there, the view just isn't what you were expecting! If I am out for a bit of a tour (rather than a day ride), I may take the 2 pics on different days - the risk being that when I get a chance to upload them both together, the challenge may already have moved on (I've had a few of those disappointments).

We seem to like the idea that the challenge is not won until both pics are posted so to me it makes sense that both pics should be submitted at the same time ie; in the same post. That way there's no delay and the original challenge remains open for others to attempt without any fuss or confusion. No other rules needed. 
Simple, and keeps the interest up and the game flowing along.

As I saw too many people trying different rules, I was trying to help but... It doesn't seem to get the unanimity.
As we live in a Democratic world, I would like all the people interested to propose a clear set of rules like the one I posted earlier.
Something simple and at the same time something clear and detailed.
It seems that the only thing that I posted where people disagree is the fact that I was not requiring a picture posted for the next challenge.

The rule should be posted point by point:
- Time that the challenge will be up to.
- Time for the winner of the previous challenge to post a new one.
- Definition of new challenge (picture, description,....).
- How long the challenge will run if not unanswered.
- Would will have the right to overwrite the challenge if not answered and in which time frame.

If the majority of people agree with one set of rules, it will be adopted and all messages relating to the setup of these rules will be deleted. Let's keep the post clean.

Now to the serious stuff.
1. If the challenge is not met within 14 days then a different challenge can be set either by the person who set the challenge or by another person who will need to win the original challenge, making the previous win viod, then set the new challenge.
(If I set a challenge which proves too difficult I can change the challenge after 14 days. Any other person can set a new challenge after 14 days by meeting the original challenge by posting a new picture, then set a new challenge by posting a new picture. This will make the previous win and challenge void)

2. When a challenge is won the new challenge must be posted within 1 day. If the new challenge is not posted within 1 day then the win is void and can be won by someone else.
( This will give time to go to a place you have in mind for the challenge)
(for the purpose, 1 day will mean till midnight on the next day)
3. A challenge can only be won if the picture was taken for the purpose of that challenge.

4. The new challenge must be set by posting a current picture taken for the purpose of setting the challenge

5. A challenge must be let run for 14 days unless won.

Accompanied by my son on his SV, Brick ventured out for a ride on an overcast morning.  Here is what we found!



Riding on we arrived at Silverstone circuit, home of the British F1 GP and Moto GP.  Unable to find a way through the gates and fence we stopped to get a photo of the bikes as close as we could get to the 'Wing' grandstand building that overlooks the new start finish straight.  



Brick was promptly 'bagged' by Aiden eager to compare to the SV.  He reckoned the Brick was heavy and long, but very smoooooth!  SV by comparison was a hoot!!! 

New challenge then, Brick by a building with unusual architecture.

Being a good Canadian boy, I took a picture of my bike in front of the world's largest hockey stick!  


So, the new challenge:  A picture of your bike in front of some record holder; world's largest, smallest, fastest etc. etc. etc.
No record holder in your area?  How about a picture of your bike by something audacious that represents your culture or country.

Since this hasnt moved for a while its time we had a new post. How about a K100 in front of a waterfall. I know its only a trickle at the moment, but its been dry for a while. Between Dorrigo and Belengen yesterday.

Ok, lets nudge this topic along a bit. Here's a photo of my very first K100. Its an 83 basic. Photo is about 1986 somewhere across the Nullabor. Note the luxurious accommodation.

I know I havent answered Smithy's challenge, but you get that, and it has been a little while.

Used an old submarine for a backdrop here, the sub will eventually go on show after a clean-up at the historic dockyard on the Medway river in Chatham.
