welcome aboard marky boy .....(also a brisvegas bloke here  )

you have started well in the members introduction ...and probably in a week or so ....or after you have made several more posts
the doors will open to the technical data and help guides ...created and hosted by our fabulous leader ...( its pretty much the bible for all 2 valve models of k bike )

but in any case , in the forum you will see a "search" feature

this could be very helpfull and often overlooked by many in here

just open the search   and type in "neutral light "  or "gpi switch " (stands for gear position indicator )   then stand back .....giggle

have fun !  they aren't hard to decipher ,,,just getting  used to the terminology is sometimes a little awkward ,,,hang in there !

perhaps when you have time and a little more confidence with us ...you might share your "kbike " story with us ?

we love pics .....many of us grew up in the comic book and cartoon ages ....grin

Hi Mark welcome aboard. The neutral can be a bit fussy about the switch on the back of the gearbox getting wet and as Brisvegas has had some rain and as welcome as it's been those switches don't like it.
There are a few posts about them and with good info but one thing you should do is seal it well once working again. I use sikaflex its 100% permanent and 100% water proof

psst ...dry it out well before sealing it  ...hair dryer  perhaps ? ...and some deoxit to clean up the corrosion  before the seal job

just a suggestion

A easy and simpel test to determine that it's the GPI switch which is reason
to the problem or not:

Find the switch connector (under the RHS battery cover) and disconnect it.
At harness side connector, connect all four contacts together...........
(it's 3 yellow wires with tracers and one brown wire)
your neutral light should now function as normal, if it's the switch that is the
reason to the problem.

Thanks to all,

I am over whelmed with the quick responses from every body.

Yes, I will share my K Bike experiences - and Pics.... She is my second.... I had a RS 1985 before this one.

Inge K . . . . great info, I will try that and let the forum know.

Further information from my end.

The bike was off the road for some months whilst I did a number of repairs including the odometer (that was fun).....I have photos and advise for any body that needs to do this repair.

Every thing was working before my repairs........ (Oops)

When I tried to start the bike after about 3 months the battery was flat, I connected jumper leads and found natural,,,,,,
Here is the part that gets a little funky..... when I hit the starter when the natural light was on the motor turned over very slowly and the dash board lights including the natural light went very dull (some thing was defiantly wrong).......
This happened for about 5 seconds before I stopped....

This was the last time I saw the natural light. She will start with the clutch pulled in, when she is in natural the GPI says "4", natural = blank, 2nd gear = "5"..... you got the picture......

I have reseated all electrical connections 5 times over in the hope the problem will go away - removing the swing arm to get at the GPI switch is not what I have plained for Sunday...

I will try Inge K's suggestion to see if the switch ok or not - I saw a big power transistor in the speedo I just hope I did not fry it........

Thanks again guys, I hope my experience and confession above can help others........

When it does those crazy readings it is usually the switch. Probably one of the 3 copper wipers is broken or displaced and not contacting.  It's a swinging arm out to fix it so take the time to do the bearings and shaft lubes as well.

Very strange…  this happened to me just today. As Rick G said "been a bit of rain" and I'm just down the hill from you (cross the border and turn left). I've been commuting in heavy rain for the past 3 days.

Oh, and by the way welcome to this great forum.
Your girl looks very similar to mine. Care to post some details?

Cheers

PS just checked your profile … Same year and model.

Was out in torrential rain a few weeks ago. My front fender extender ended up lost in France somewhere so more water. Oil light came on, checked level, everything all ok. Soon as rain stopped it went out again. Happy it was only water shorting issue.

My GPI does this every now and again. Must be rain. I did seal it all up with sikaflex but maybe not well enough.

90% of the times its fine, but a little bit of moisture will spin it out for days. No big deal but I do find it annoying.

Will have to do it again....

Thanks Inge K.

I followed your instructions and found the problem to be the switch. Now for the fun part - is it possible to even touch the GPI swich with out taking off the swing arm?
I can not see it up under the bike. Id like to be check the terminals before removing the swing arm.....

Yes I would like to post photographs but I can not start a gallery - nor find out where I can upload to an open gallery.

There are no terminals to check and there is no short cut on this one you just gotta take that darn swingarm out.
When I do one of them I carefully cut away the old rubbery cover and prise it open inside a plastic bag so as not to lose any bits like tiny springs etc. Clean and use some WD40 or similar to reassemble then clean the outside with acetone and give a generous covering of sikaflex and let it sit for a week or so to cure if possible but at least 24 hours.

What I did was just make a google blog, upload the image to that, view the blog, right click on the photo and copy image location url and and plug the url into our pic thingy in the toolbar when you make a post

I just use imgserv thats integrated into the forum.

Click on the 3rd button to the left of the youtube button.

Then you just select the file, hit upload, then copy the link it gives you and paste it into you post. The forum will then use the link to display the image when you post it.

I should write a how to for this, as it comes up alot and its not that hard, just has a few steps involved.
