Don't forget to put Vaseline (another use for it ) on the side cover spigots and mountings ...makes the covers much easier to remove/replace

without damaging the pins

a few bent retainers were found . especially on the heat soaked -coloured side , now straightened hopefully now running true .

That is an amazing rebuild thread mate. I saw this come up in "posts since your last visit" and at page 1 I was keen to offer my welding skills but you seem to have the frame sorted now. I also have a mate in Brisbane (I am in the middle of nowhere, south of Chinchilla) with a few skills, if you ever get stuck, let me know. Thanks for the inspiration

still need a tig welder for the frame crack marc

I think tig is the right way to do it ...too fiddly in the frame area for safe stick work on the upper side of the frame spreader under the main frame members ,its just a difficult to get at location .

not very edumacated in lots of things but willing to learn what I can, along the path

there seems to be a bit of a theme developing , with some finessing to come .. gives a different view of bmw standard black bits and how they hide the great engineering that lays beneath

got a  k1100 rear wheel from Floyd the other day  thanks mate  really good contribution

thought it might make a good rear being 3.00  inches , well good to have alternative to the big rear at 4.5 inches

tyre stripped off and cleaning with acetone cleared off all the rubber that usually sticks to the rim ,
my aim to get a good seal again

upon inspection quite a bit of corrosion had developed in spots under the rubber bits adhered to the rim , and some gouges from tyre replacement

got me to this , late at night though



and in some decent inside light



just now , along with clear coat of the repainted forks , looks ok I guess

another fuel rail (thanks alby ) really grungy, but looks acceptable I guess, now




clear coat (a number of layers) to the old style centre side stand should help protect it a bit more ,  thanks  ever so much Tom



and an old bevel box  cleaned up,  some work to do inside and a 16 tooth rear spline shaft to find

just an update to whats been happening with the project . sneaking in some after dark type cleanups  without causing too much attention to the neighbours

surprisingly found some calliper pin parts ...win !!! ...and after some cleaning , have the front end brakes sorted out



decided to give the ex Alby gearbox case  bit more cleanup  before a rebuild to happen , added clearcoat after wards to help keep it easier to clean etc and fit in with the theme





meanwhile I got some parts  from Maurice Bremmers in the Netherlands  for the foot plate stuff  springs and retainers ...hard to find at a good price
but encouraging to get completed on the parts list

as they arrived (yesterday afternoon )



a bit later , a bit cleaner after a electrolysis bath ,,, brush finish  and ready to go



and fitted up to the rubbers from Smithy  and the footpeg plates from south aussie care of klompy , marie pennykid, Al pennykid  and a few others on
 the east coast part express here in aussie



starting lo look the goods and now clear coated as well ...hope they hold the sheen as they stand



I sent the cleanup version of the parts back to maurice  who commented , that these parts have been well used for many years and that he is glad to se them back in use and ready to start a new life ..on yet another "k" bike ...back on the road



the pins I got for the pivot - retainer on the foot pegs didnt look like that would hold the sheen and just grubby fit up .. so will be upgraded to stainless 8 x 50 mm bolts with the excess thread cut to length which should look good as a combination

more to come as I get to it ..probably missed a few things that ive done over the last couple o weeks ...but good progress achieved

to be honest I was looking for a globe holder for the instruments



I thought maybe a couple of bucks and I would have a couple
but for $5.00  got a shoot load of bits , including instruments mount



an additional $5.00 from another seller got a couple of z brackets

the shock looks a bit grubby at first



but pulled apart today and a bit of cleaning , looks good





a couple of corrosion marks on the rod , hopefully some hard chroming may repair this at RAD  shockies  ?



but amazingly the shock still has pressure and damping , although the seal seems a bit weepy

lots of work to do to the spring yet  , for another day

good news about the shock

saw paul at RAD shockies today

quoted for all the fixes and hard chroming to the shaft ...about $240.00 

he mentioned that Chris at you know where , used to send quite a few in  , some years ago now

he also said they were a "pretty good shock "

so I'm thinking I'm ahead on getting something worth while without buying new 

there seems to be some valving available to the user as well , not sure if its rebound damping or compression damping at the moment  
but will attempt to find out more  as time goes on
unless someone has some information to hand ???

Charlie that shockie has a rebound adjuster on it. Rebound only. I believe it takes 6 sweeps of the key or pin either left or right. + or -
With regard to RAD shocks I had mine to him twice both time with under 1000km on the shock it developed a rattle. bear in mind that the rebound damper adjuster was hard fixed and required a huge effort to loosen for adjustment. I gave up and bought a rebuilt K100 shock for mine. Don't be surprised if you have to leave the adjuster alone for the shockie to work as repaired. RAD seem to rebuild it as a fixed unit and if you adjust it you loosen off the damper valve. That's what I think is wrong with mine. One day I'll find a KONI dealer who can rebuild it properly.

If you need any more bulbholders Charlie - even just for spares - I'm drowning in the buggers. Yours FOC. And anyone else who needs a couple.

cheers Dai  got a few spares now , some are corroded but I bathed them in a mix and it appears to work after 24 hours
with nice shiney metal apparent after a brush with contact cleaner to clean off the gunk .

Charlie, I think you have stuffed it up with your most recent attempt. I have two bikes here for you to practise on until you perfect it to mirror type finish. You will also have to check my seat recovery job whilst you are here and adjust it to your standard. No doubt there are others out there who think the way I do. Come on, all we are doing is helping Charlie.

parts to be acquired list is getting  to a very low number now , thankfully

but some major works still planned , inside that motor , fortunately  smithys output shaft has one of those problems resolved in the short term ,
till I can rebuild an exchange one for him upon removal of the other ...thanks mate .

a head inspection and likely rebuild is on the cards also , fortunately I have a spare (from old gerty  4 years ago now , with later versions of valve seats )

but I'm happy if I can help out at some stage Stan

some barback - risers appeared today care of tackler (dave ) and his recent purchase from ca in the US from Nick Kearney

arrived they look in great condition for age

ok ...soo... thought to do a econo rebuild of Gertys old head ...for the red frame project ...measured clearances on the old 83 head were under 5 thou on the outlets so im thinking a good deal of valve seat regression ...not a good start ..the Gerty old head valve guides dont have much slop at all...which is a bonus .. the valve seats and gear look good to me and have the later unleaded compatible metal work ....now cleaning up all the gear ready for some serious grinding at the ports to relieve the tight corners and clear out the guides areas ...gladly is above 10 degrees c at night this week ...so far a welcome change ..some pics along the way

I now have a small amount of appreciation and understanding for how much work you are putting into your bike.  Good stuff!

I think this will do , last bit of brush work ...hmm...  either wax or clear coat ?  (clear coat discolours over time)  ...but  something easy to keep clean ??

Two coats of clear.

Any clear will probably yellow and/or peel eventually.  I originally had my crank and valve covers spray painted with chrome paint and 2-part clear.  This setup only lasted 4 years before the 2-part clear yellowed and started to lift and peel off in places.  And that was only from the engine heat experienced by the case covers which are in the flow of air while the bike is operating.  Your asking for a high performance clear coat in a harsh environment Charlie. The idea of using wax is probably better and it can be removed with solvents or refreshed as you desire. Access after the fact would be the issue.
