Just bought a new rear tyre (Michelin Macadam 50) for my '86 K100RS.

The manufacture date shown is 08/09 (August 2009).

Is that too "old" for what is sold as a new tyre?

Your thoughts please.

Its 7 years old.

Will be hard and not at all good most especially in cool or wet conditions no matter how it was stored and then add the time from now until tread is worn out.

I wouldn't use it and if someone sold me one with that date on it I would send it back.

Our cars will fail test if tyres are over 5 years old.

Call me fussy but I have had enough bike tyres under me to bin them once they hit even 4 years.

Thanks Olaf.

Yeah, it is a bit on the old side, so I'll take it back tomorrow and get it changed.

I recall my K100LT sliding around the place on an old rear tyre. Felt very scary. I ended up on the BT45 and love them. Lots of alternatives too. Endless debate on them but I think in time you end up finding one that suits your riding style and set up better than some others.

Well, I took it back and explained the situation.

Swapped it for a Bridgestone BT45 Battlax for no extra money ($150.00AU for the Michelin and $179.00AU for the Battlax).

Date of manufacture: 1st week, 2016.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Very Happy

That sounds like a good deal.

Take care scrubbing it in, first 50-100 miles if its wet is like riding grease. But once scrubbed in..... I had a lovely late run home on some nice rural roads last night and just liking those BT45s.
