Greetings, everyone. I just purchased my very first motorcycle. I found a gem in St Louis. It is a one owner 1993 K1100RS with just under 11k miles. I had seen a few custom builds and wanted to do one myself. I love the look of k bikes when done well as a scrambler/bobber. Some might call it a cafe racer, but I don't think these fit that category and I'm not a cafe purist. Just my opinion, no offence to anyone who calls theirs a cafe. This moto is in such pristine condition, I may have to get a 2nd one so as to not molest this one. I am on limited data so I will post a link I made from imgur. Let me know what you guys think!

Hi Skullmonkey. I think you'll find that 'bobber', 'scrambler' and 'cafe' are all unique and individual motorcycle mod styles with their own features. And then there's 'brat' and probably some others. The trouble these days is many modders become confused about what their bike will look like and end up with a fusion of styles and not looking too good. Just my opinion but a K-bike is well suited to the cafe and scrambler styles.

Yes you're right. That one of yours is way too good to molest. In any case, imo the K1100RS is not really a good contender for the cafe style anyway. They are a tiny bit longer and a little bit heavier than the K100 and they tend to overheat in city traffic. If you want to cafe a K-bike, you'd be better off finding and older K100 with busted fairings that you could buy cheaply.

The K1100RS is a thoroughbred, designed to be ridden hard out on the open road not poncing around the inner city waiting for its owner to finish his latte. Learn to ride that 1100 properly and then take it on a trip for a day or two and open the throttle on a few good bends and you'll see what it can do. It truly is a dream to ride.

And welKome to the forum by the way. There's plenty of help and advice here no matter what you want to do.

Welcome!  I am envious of your bike.  Specimens like yours never seem to show up around here.

I agree with Hollister.  The Later model K100RS and K1100's are not really designed to lead the life of an "urban assault vehicle".  They have been optimized for the open road, and loping through hundreds of miles is what they do best.  Short runs in heavy traffic make them overheat, and they suffer greater wear  and tear to the mechanical parts.

A much better plan would be to flip the K1100 and find a K100 or K75 RT or LT model that has been dropped.  The fairing damage will lower the price more than what you could sell a good fairing for.  If possible get one that has been dropped on the left side.  Right side parts are the ones with the best resale value because it seems most of these bikes go down on the right side.

I too bought a K with the idea of converting it into a café style. It was my first bike in many years.
As I became a better, safer and more proficient rider I really started to appreciate my K100LT for what it is.
Don't get in a hurry to customize. put some miles on her. you may fall in love!
Dale.

Welcome along. I'll echo what others have said - get a bike with damaged panels to café, keep that RS as is (very nice condition by the look of it).

I believe these bikes are about to go up in value as the number of clean unmolested examples are fewer and fewer.

Yeah, I think I'm going to leave it stock and keep it clean. I just found the manual and tool kit completely untouched in the "secret" compartment under the seat!  cheers

Welcome from Idaho.  You've come upon a gem, one that's hardly run in yet.  I completely agree with the advice already offered above.  Please put some miles on the bike to be able to appreciate it for what it is.  I think you will be glad you did.   Very Happy
