Hi , I’m Kathy and me and my boyfriend just purchased a 1989 k100rs. It’s thought to have a bad fuel pump so are anxious to get it running. We have other bikes but no bmw’s, and not any repair experience on bikes. So this should be interesting. New to BMW and fixing bikes 29feb010

Thanks! Yes, it’s got some cosmetic issues, but clean looking overall. Great advise. I tend to overdo everything. I’ll be looking for torque specs soon.

Wow!! Thanks! That just saved me a ton of searching and asking silly questions. Trust me when I say I can ask some pretty ridiculous questions. I’m new to wrenching so even the basic concepts are new to me. But I am excited to get it running!!

Welcome!  That is a sweet looking bike in the photos.  If anyone can get it running it will be the brain trust here.  Re: overtightening, go to Harbor Freight and get a torque wrench with 3/8" drive.  They aren't as perfect as the $100 versions, but are a lot more accurate than your hands.

Welcome.  
Regarding working on bikes, I'll put it this way.  I hate working on cars with a passion, but don't mind working on bikes at all. Everything is so much simpler, more logical, smaller, less rustier...well, it is actually enjoyable rather than a dreaded chore.

I wanted to add more pics of the bike. Dave’s charging the battery so wasn’t able to pull it out of the garage or close the seat good.   Wanted to get any thoughts. The bike is like a piece of art. Every pic I took , I thought, wow that’s pretty. Small leak under bike. Wonder what that is, or I read something about leaks can start if the bike has sat. This bike has sat for the last 3.5 years so we have that to deal with.   Dave and I work opposite shifts so we have to wait until the weekend to dive in because I don’t want him to touch it without me here, and I’m afraid I’ll break something and don’t have much of a clue .

That oil spot is I suspect a leaking rubber boot on the clutch mechanism or possibly just a badly adjusted clutch but either way a fairly easy fix and not at all expensive.

Your drip is almost certainly the clutch arm boot. Search the forum - you'll find lots of cussing about replacing that wee thing. It's just awkward rather than difficult.

If the bike's been standing for 3.5 years, you have no real idea how long the tyres have been on there. I'd count on replacing those and pleeeze don't ask for recommendations. Two things are guaranteed to bring out some of the more intersting opinions around here:- Very Happy

1. What are the best tyres to use?
2. What is the best oil to use?

I use Avon Roadriders for tyres running 38/40 psi front/rear. For oil, any good quality dinosaur pee.

The tires actually look fairly new, but have not inspected closely yet so time will tell.    With all the resources online, I feel so equipped to conquer this.   But We haven’t started yet:).  I hope my positive attitude continues .

Thanks Barry, I’ve first started to learn mechanics about a year ago when I purchased a 2000 Jeep Wrangler.   It has been frustrating to say the least.   But fulfilling at the same time when I figure something out myself and better yet, replaced or fixed something .   Im glad to hear bikes are less frustrating Smile.

Let’s hope for fairly easy and not expensive Smile    I’m all in at this point .   I want to ride that bike so so bad!   Or for now at least get a ride on it until I can touch .

Go and have a look at the Chris Harris videos on youtube, he covers a wide variety of all things K and some R bikes, if you get bitten by the bug. The main point here is ask, people are willing to help and no question is stupid.

+1 on the Chris Harris videos.  It's where I got my foundation in wrenching on these wonderful machines.

WARNING:  Chris is very knowledgeable and explains things clearly, but has a pretty salty vocabulary and seldom goes more than a sentence or two without dropping an F-bomb.

Thanks for the u tube resource.  Swearing makes those videos more entertaining in my opinion.  I’ve gotten hooked on aVe’s videos recently and I know nothing about the topic at hand, but he makes me interested in all the tool/mechanic stuff he reviews.
