I have been given 2 x 16 spline Final drives which have been opened up together, had the crown wheels etc removed and all parts placed in a box. As such I am not sure what crown wheel belongs with what pinion. Is it possible to identify the gear sets using engineers blue or some other method ??

Usually there are pair markings on gear sets. Often it is etched on in hidden places that wont be subject to wear.

Perhaps counting the 'teeth' of each gear to see what you can deduce - ie, 31:11 or 33:11, etc., and there may be other teeth counts like 12 on the pinion. When fitting them they're going to have to be measured and shimmed appropriately anyway, as you prolly already know.

The casings should have 31/11 or 32/11 on the outside. 31/11 is from early K100RS and 32/11 from early K100 and K100RS. Check the casings first and if you have one of each then as said you can count the teeth and that does it for you. 

Curious as to why they were dismantled. I have a few spare final drives but have not disassembled them. You may [should] be able to reunite them by following the wear patterns.

If you are reassembling I should ptrobably put in a new big bearing. I had one give out at 80,000 miles [had it from 26,000 miles] and another at 100,000 miles [had it since 58,000 miles].
