Trying to find an aftermarket fairing windshield for my '85 RT.....the one on there currently is in poor shape.

Any suggestions?

Hi Slowride,
Is the original design not to your liking as they may/should still be available for your model.

The one on the bike is actually a home-made shield and although it was made fairly well, it's made out of plexiglass which is known to shatter and it's fairly beat up as it is. I would like a lexan shield. Ironically a buddy of mine who happens to be a four star mechanic and fabricator told me today to just go down to Home Depot and pick up a sheet of lexan and cut one myself with a jig saw. It's ironic because that's most likely where the last owner bought the plexiglass! lol

Other than that I've done some searching online but to no avail. I pulled my search short because I figured I'd ask here first.....gettin forum lazy. I train easy....

Hi Slowride,
Lexan is good I recommend it to my clients for security windows. It is not so easy to get polished edges on and it scratches easily as does plexiglass. I would look to buy a SH screen in fair condition and use the Mothers plastic polish on it.

Hi Slowride,

I have a mate who actually gets screens for TDM900's fabricated out of high impact acryllic. It is stronger and slightly more expensive than regular perspex but easier to work (apparently) than Lexan.

As K-Bike remarked Lexan scratches easily but has better impact resistance but perspex is able to be polished using ever increasing grades of emery paper to remove scratches.

His original screen was plain perspex and an impact test was not encouraging as you suggested.

He essentially created a cardboard template and went to a local plastic fabricator and said "make me one of these". Quite cheap and very effective.

Not as complicated a shape as the RT screen but should still be do-able. I keep meaning to see if he will make one for me but have not got around to it yet.

So might be worth looking around to see if a custom one is feasible.

Regards,

Phil
