Should the headlight go off while the starter is turning?

Indeed it does as that is the function of the load shed relay which drops the current from the indicators, horn and lights while the starter is cranking.
So in short nothing to worry about.
Unless of course in your case it is not :suspect:

Thank you I just never realy took notice until my other problems occurred

No problems it is easy to imagine you have other issues when you suddenly think "did it do that before...?"
