I just finished repairing mine. It had the factory upgrade kit installed already so I just got new bolts, taped the holes and cleaned with brake cleaner, and than used Loctite 262 for final installation. So far so good.

The heatshield is there for protection on the passenger to save a burn to the leg when dismounting. Why not disperse of it altogether.

I won't get rid of mine because the shed where the bike is, is a bit tight for space. When I put it on the centre stand, I often rub my leg against the exhaust.

And...to borrow a word from you lovely Poms, it looks naff when it's removed.

Hi Guys!
Don`t you just love that heatshield.....
When I went up the Grossglockner hochalpenstrasse last summer my K100 made a strange noise in the lefthand turns.
As I always ride with earplugs,it didn`t occure to me that the exhaust shield had came loose and was just hanging on from the front and made a racket as I coasted into the parkinglot at "Kaiser Franz Hohe".
Head turned everywhere, especially a group of nuns who had came by bus.
And the local bike riders who wonderd about the idiot who rode into the parking with a piece of tin hanging from his bike.
Luckily I had some M6 bolts of correct lenght in my toolkit.
And with a swift move,as if nothing particular had happened, put the shield back where it should have been in the first place......
Got my pictures and even got a blessing from one of the nuns.
By the way.....
I think the shield is there to keep some heat of the pannier aswell.
Cheers,Wikur!

Wikur makes a very good point there. The other thought which occurred to me was a long hard run getting the silencer really hot could maybe give a problem with synthetic riding suit trousers if they touched the silencer minus heat shield. I think I would keep it in place personally.
