Hopped on the bike yesterday while running arrands on my second stop of the day and pushed the start button no starter. The lights where all on as normal and the fuel pump started running but the starter did not turn. Bumped the bike back and forth in gear a couple of times and whoa it started but I didnt have any turn signals, pushed the turn signal on and both blinked once then nothing. So I'm guessing after looking around at other posts that the starter brushes are probably the problem or at least a good starting point just wanted to see if you guru's agreed and or had more insight.

In my case the signs of the starter problems become apparent when the lights and blinkers started to misbehave. The lights started to blink as a function of revs and the turn signals went on/off randomly.
Next, the bike stopped and refused to turn over until I bumped it as described by Dave.

The point I am making is that the starter problems cause all kinds of seemingly random problems with the electrics. I guess that if it is connected to the load relay, it will misbehave. Ignition and FI are on a separate circuit, so they work even if the starter circuit/load relay are playing up.

But the bike starts and runs well so far.

Adiwan, have a look at Bert's schematics, then the function of the load-shed relays and the ground connection over it becomes clear. If not just ask.

The brushes cause a problem of ground connection and the effects are quite interresting. It could take place in the headlights, the turn signals, sometimes the horn ... or everywhere else on the electrical circuits of your bike...

Good point Green Cat. It affects everything fed by the load shed relay. The temperature switching unit can be affected too.

Probably one of the issues is the load shed relay starts to chatter in and out with the result I imagine the headlight would eventually look like demented Aldis light when it gets really bad.
