Hi,

I finally got the bike ready to ride. The paintwork took more time than expected, but it was worth it - Ferrari red. Almost all seals have been replaced and all previously painted parts have been repainted, including brake calipers and handles. Old bolts have been replaced with stainless (A2 or A4) ones. Only one technical part has been replaced in the engine - old 6-rivet output shaft was loose and used 12-rivet one was installed. I have driven it for about 300 km now and there is no leaks so far. Wink

Wow, does that look good!  Red is the fastest color, and for sure Ferrari red has to be one of the very fastest shades of red.  Nice!

PS: For the coolest photos try taking the picture with the camera about 75cm above the ground. That's how the magazine guys do it.

I didn't and my photos were cool anyway... Razz

Hi,

Thank you for your comments. Here are some pictures of my project. There are so many stories to be told and these pic’s gives a little taste of what I experienced. For many of you, this is a normal side project, but for me this was a real learning opportunity. Without forum help and Clymer manual this project could have been a lot more painful to finish.

When I compare my project to those who completely rebuild the bike, I have had a relatively easy job. Bringing a bike to its original condition (or close to that) seems to be easier than customizing it and fitting new non-BMW parts. No welding, no cutting. In the end, everything is fine, and the bike works well too.

This is where all started – pure love at first sight. Parts just put together for transportation. I was getting a set of winter tires for my daughter’s car and saw this miserable K-bike abandoned in the corner of an underground private garage where tires were stored too. I made an offer and one month later got her finally home. Why K-bike and not something else? There is a picture that reveals the secret.

After dismantling the bike in November -20, I found this lump of metal.

Finally ready to ride 2_dirt10

Which finally only needed a new output shaft, all seals and clutch. And, of course, heavy cleaning and new paint.

Buttons needed refreshing. “Heat gun” method was found in internet somewhere … worked reasonably well for yellow and red buttons. I still would like to have new buttons for both assemblies. Couldn't find any.

Brake calipers needed a new paint too. They were sprayed with heat resistant paint and baked in our oven. Do not ask if my wife liked it. I am still alive.  affraid .

In early March -21, I got the frame back from sand blasting and powder coating. First were new bushings installed for the engine.
Finally ready to ride 8_fram11

Then I was able to install cleaned parts including new steering bearings.

In the beginning of May I got fairing parts back from the paint shop. Then installing a tank with new hoses and filter etc… , synchronizing the TB with home made manometer. It is working, believe me.

About in a week I was able to make a test drive. Now it is in everyday use. The whole process took 7 months.

This is why K-bikes are close to my heart. My first touch with K-bikes. Picture is taken in July 1991 somewhere in Alps on the way to Northern Italy. There is me (10kg ago) and my bike. During those days I fell in love with it. The picture is taken with a film camera.  At that time, nobody could dream of digital ones.

At the last picture. This is my another bike - e-powered by Yamaha. German made as well.

That is stunning and I like that you have brought her back to "original" condition.

In July '91, I would have been nearby on my brand new red 75S  Very Happy  She is having a bit of a makeover in anticipation of her thirtieth birthday.  New tyres and suspension recently.

I must have missed this one while it was ongoing. Kudos to you for bringing this bike back to 'near new' condition. I am anticipating returning to OZ after a while to pull my red RS from the shed and giving a good going over. I'm not sure I'll have the time and space to refurb her like you have, but seeing a bright red K I am reminded of how nice they can look, and how much I miss riding the bike.

Gorgeous! All the bodywork for my bike is currently out for refinishing. I'm sticking with the Alaska Blue. I can hardly wait. I really like the look of the black engine covers, so I may do that. I know that I could do it myself with heat-resistant paint but I wonder about the longevity of it versus paying to have it powder coated.
