It goes like this.

Jedi Girl [Magda] as we know has a very nice K100LT.

We haven't seen too much of her in recent times between exams and jetting off to home to get married. But we have kept in touch with what's happening in Eccentric land. Last exam is on Friday 9th June.

Anyway its in need of a service and has a few running issues [non running] and she has gotten all the service parts and a few more as well.

Doing professional exams at the moment and no time to get the K sorted.

Chatting last night to Magda and to 88/Will we came up with an idea of a get together where a few of us might get her back on the road. It does mean us bringing some tools but to be fair not much is needed for a K service and between a few of us we will manage this no problem.

The inevitable barbecue suggestion was made and she was delighted, slipping in the fact that she has a bbq anyway. This makes for a nice Eccentric day of workshop, do a few tasks, get Ks looked at and whatever in a very convivial atmosphere.

So, Saturday 10 24th June was suggested and so far works for Will and myself and I said I would pup up a thread. But there may be a few issues with the LT so it would be nice to have a few more Eccentrics along. As in as many as can come and the invite is open to all. I am happy to offer to do some bbqing etc. If we get sorted early there might be time for a few miles in some nice direction.

Location is Magda's place at Monasterevin, not far off J14 on the M8. A little discussion may take place as to any odd little parts that might be needed.

Pop 10th June in the diary and come along for what has to be a good day.

On the day:
Magda
Ringfad
Corkboy
88
92KK Olaf

On the BBQ:
Angus, recently deceased.

A plan was discussed some time back of a trip to Europe taking in a few places and it is likely this will come back up. We did look at it for last year but weddings put a stop to it. My eldest daughter decided to get married in Italy and Magda decided to get married too so it never got too far.

Magda was on for it as she has a place in Poland for us to stop off at. I am on for one too.

Maybe time to look at something for 2018.....

In the meantime are you going to come down to us at St Leon sur Vezere in September? Excellent camping hosting and roads there. I have ferry sorted for 2-21 September.

Magda has some nice friends.....

Would you like me to start a singles section?

Singles and K75s would nicely balance K100s then.

I'll be much closer on that date than I am now - Rodemack, France. Unlikely to be able to make it, though.   Sad

Greetings, Magda. Fond memories of the day I rode with you and the other Eccentrics a couple of years ago. You're in my avatar! I wish you success in your exams and in getting the K sorted.  Smile

Hello All!!

As my friend, house mate, motorbike enthusiast and a great mechanic Jack is out on holidays until June 11th I would rather we got together when he's back.

I know 18th is father's day so some of you might have commitments I suggest gathering on June 24th.

There will be barbecue as we have a nice grill house in the back yard. I would say it will be awesome as we have a Cuban chef in the house!

All welcome, thank you all for your help!

So, what time are you arriving in Dublin?

Magda

I hope that Cuban chef is well trained!!

I just logged on to tender my apologies, and dissapointment, as i am in Northern Spain on the K for the first two weeks of June.

But I am around for the 24th!   bounce

Looks like it is firming up to be a good meet-up.

I'll bring the mallet and vice-grips, oh yeah, and duck tape and yellow cable-ties.

This is sounding good! Nice one Fintan.

A few little jobs suspected...

Balance throttle bodies.
Clean TPS connection.
Temperature thermostat [coolant needed anyway for service]?
Usual fluid changes.
Brake fluid change [can't remember if its ABS/Non ABS LT]
LT panels removal for service.
Tank removal, fuel hose/clips
Check for air leaks at intakes.

Magda has new coils and some of the plug leads plus all the service items.
Tools needed including oil filter removal tool, sizes for head bearing tightening?.
Brake cleaner [we should pop pads for a check and clean].

Could be a fun day but we might do things to more than one K as its good to have a team together.

Magda has her own imported Cuban chef so it promises to be a good day!

Land in Dublin at 17:10 if all is on time. Plus getting through airport processes. Then there's the problem of getting to our accommodation and getting to Monasterevin.

I fear it would be problematic.  Sad

Had a chat with Will tonight, seems we have what's needed between us.

Fintan:
Brake cleaner, oil filter tool, yellow cable ties........

Simon.
Balancer.

Olaf
Have some copper paste, fuel line clips, fuel line, one set of brake pins, WD40?.

What spanner sizes for head bearings, we will need these I suspect.

I changed the pads on my abs k today, had to open the bleed screw to push back the pistons.fitted the new pads and re bled them. brakes are still a bit spongy. I have never before had a BMW with ABS, do i have to bleed them at the modulators aswell? I don't have that fancy pump people on American sites keep talking about, just an 11mm spanner and a dirty rag.

Hi Guys
If  I can wangle the day off I'll take a spin down,
and meet some more Eccentrics, maybe hand out some patches to those who haven't got one yet,
(see Will and Olaf for latest ones.)

Had a discussion with Will/88 last night about what to bring with us.

Magda has all the service parts as in plugs filters oil and also replacing coils, plug leads but she only has a new 1 and 4.

So this is a list that we can adjust:

Magda.
Plugs
Oils
Oil filter
Air filter
Fuel filter
Coils x 2 [brand new]
Plug leads 1 and 4

So we discussed what to bring as there is a running issue that may be down to some of the more normal K issues

Vacuum gauges [Simon]
Grease for spline lube [Will]
Oil filter tool? [Olaf?]
Intake manifold crimping tool anyone? Not sure if we will be going that far but maybe.
Meter to test coils, plug leads etc?
Meter to test inputs into ICU/FICU?

Spare plug leads 2 and 3 anyone?
Spare ICU [Olaf?]
Spare FICU [Olaf]
Spare HES [Olaf?Spare fuel hose?
Fuel hose clips?
Temperature sensor anyone?
Crankcase breather pipe anyone?

Carb cleaner to test for air leaks on intake?

Given that Magda bought brand new parts like coils and plug leads can we test the old ones as they may well still be good and no point in binning good used parts.

Any other items to be thinking of? I will put these into the first post in the thread.

Magda will meet us at Mayfield Services Monasterevin, Junction 14 on M8. Good stop for coffee.

As its a workshop day and we can do some things to other Ks too so if you plan on a tank off at Magda's DONT fill up at Monasterevin, leave it run low to make a tank on/off easier.

I'm definately out but for a different reason to usual: LFB has blown the OEM rear suspension and I'm still waiting for Realm Engineering to return my overhauled RamShock. I was talking to them yesterday and it seems that there was a problem with the body seals, so they're effectively going to give me a brand new shock - but it has to be made. It's like riding a f*****g pogo stick ATM and I'm sure it could make you seasick given time.

I could come down on the Bandit but... the wee skitter came out in sympathy with LFB. It blew one fork seal and the exhaust system on the way to the MoT last Monday. Then I broke three bolts in the cylinder head trying to get the exhaust off and that was after a week of soaking them in penetrating oil. Cylinder head change this weekend...

It's motorway most of the way and very smooth riding......Harley owners ride it on hard tails......

Disappointed for you though, hope that shock gets back real quick.

Would be great if you brought those. I don't have spanners for head bearing adjustment as I must do mine too but we can look at Magda's.

I will go to my shed tonight and pull out the other items.

Anyone have a spare temperature sensor?

We will miss Dai and Corkboy, both for knowledge and sense of humour. At least the lardons won't go missing.

Hope Magda's workshop day went well and achieved all that was required - both technically and socially.

I was sorry that I wasn't able to make it over, but it was University pick up day and my services were required elsewhere. Mind you, having part filled the car with daughter's belongings, there was just enough room left to be able to detour on the way home to pick up an eBay impulse buy....LT upper fairing, headlight, indicators, left & right lowers, radiator fairing, small side panels, fairing mounting bracket & horns, glove boxes and lids, knee pads, duck tail (including rear light and indicators), fairing infills and a screen etc. all in very good condition and the right colour for my fleet (apart from the screen which is very yellowed) - all secured for a opening bid of a mere £60! All that was missing from getting a complete set are the mirror pods (the job lot only included one and that had its glass broken) and a front mudguard. My intention was to get them sprayed up and ready as spares so that I could fit them to Heidi and then give hers a general respray and tart up in slower time. Given the colour and condition, I'm already well ahead of the game!

Definately hope it went better than mine. I put the replacement head on the Bandit and was just about to torque down the cam caps on the second camshaft when it became obvious that one bolt was just spinning in the socket.

'F*** it - the thread's stripped' I thought. A nuisance but not a complete showstopper as I keep 5mm, 6mm and 8mm helicoils on the shelf. But the thread hadn't stripped - the damn bolt had sheered!!! A high-tensile bolt that wasn't even down far enough to have the torque wrench applied to it had sheered cleanly two threads down and flush with the cylinder head at the bottom of a recess. Of course it was the one that was in the most awkward damn place to get at! What really p!ssed me off was that the replacement cylinder head was only £67 but the gasket set was £134 and now I was going to need another one. The cylinder head was back on the bench inside ten minutes but I did have to suppress a severe temptation to literally throw it in the bin.

On close inspection I saw that the bolt was protruding about 1mm above the bottom of the recess. I figured that because it had sheered before being torqued, there was a good chance it was still loose in the threads but how the hell was I going to get a grip on high-tensile steel? With more high tensile steel of course! I ground the edge of a very good Bosch electric screwdriver bit to a sharp edge and with a couple of blows from the BFH's smaller cousin, was able to cut a very shallow 'slot' across the shank of the broken bolt. It was enough - just. I gripped the screwdriver bit in a pair of vice grips and by applying a lot of downward pressure to stop the bit from climbing out of the slot, I was able to back the broken bolt out. Better still, on inspection I realised that as the head gasket had only been subject to clamping pressure for less than half an hour, it hadn't yet taken up a permanent set and was re-useable.

Figuring that at this point I'd probably used up my entire day's luck in twenty minutes, I put the cylinder head back on loosely, took a walk up the road and bought myself a bottle of Jameson's 'Cooper's Croze'. Turned out to be a very drinkable whiskey too.

If the engine has not been run then use some 3 bond and pull the bolts down to about 10lb then let it sit for 24 hours and then tension them as per the manual I have done it a few times with success. I would not do it with a well used gasket but a new one it has worked OK

It's a multi-part gasket Rick - I'd certainly do that if it was was a single-part gasket. Never seen one like this before; it literally is three layers riveted together at about 4" (100mm) intervals so the whole gasket is floppy. The one that came off had been crushed flat so that it resembled a single-layer gasket.

Oh for the days of solid copper gaskets and a gas stove...

First off, it was a great day and Dai after his frustration joined us in his Jameson, which comes from........Cork.

There will be more, looks like we need 2 more to finish the job but loose ends are being picked up on the way.

We were all sent home with a gift package. This was after being fed copious quantities of tea, coffee that had Will jumping with excitement, burgers specially made for us and fantastic hospitality.

When I got home curiosity got the better of me.

On close inspection I saw the bottle had been opened.

The label said rum but it wasn't......

I am not sure what it is in Polish, but 'bzoovka' doesn't sound the right translation into English.

Hit by bazooka might be more like it.

Looking forward tot he to the next one!!

Looking forward to the next time.

What a productive day.

Sump pan off and pick-up cleared ready for fresh oil. The water pump and kit I took with me for a run in the ultra sound bath before seals replacement will be carried out.

The Sprag clutch was hit with a bit of cleaner and line whilst we had the covers off.

We passed judgement on a few other bits that will need sorting and laid groundwork for the next instalment by way of cleaning prepping and soaking in oil.

We made out like bandits on the hospitality

I haven't tried a shot of the BZooka yet but I have an occasion soon that will provide the opportunity.

Jedi Girl Get Together: Magda's Workshop Day. We need day 2. Music10

A musical interlude during an enjoyable day. I think Will was playing some Mahler ...

I also like Dai hit the Whiskey last night. I was able to open a bottle of Talisker collected on my recent visit to Skye on my K1100RS.

We tried the bzookva (my sister and husband are visiting) but deemed it not suitable if you were driving any time soon, so it will wait for a more suitable time.

Unfortunately my frustration didn't end there. The cam cover bolts to the cam caps and guess what? A thread stripped as soon as the bolt started taking up. Of with the cam cap and onto the bench for an M6 helicoil. I even made sure the pillar drill table was perfectly horizontal before applying the drill. Not much crud came out which seemed a bit odd but... the helicoil threads looked alright when I tapped it and the helicoil went in okay. Then I found out the cap bolts are 7mm.

Jedi Girl Get Together: Magda's Workshop Day. We need day 2. 259495

So I took a 6mm bolt and found a spacer that would form the correct shoulder and said a lot of prayers. It looks like it's holding, so far. Fortunately it doesn't have to be very tight. Which was all okay until I stood up and realised that despite the fact that I hadn't knocked or otherwise disturbed the cylinders, the base gasket now gives every appearance of leaking from the bottom of no.1 cylinder.

Somebody remind me why I don't like Japanese bikes.

Much has happened since the last post....

Magda headed off to Cuba while I was in France but there has been a little behind the scenes conversation about the next Workshop Day when she is back which I believe will be soon unless tropical storms intervene.

Will is heading to France at the long weekend and will be missing both that weekend and the following weekend.

Would a Saturday in November work for us? Could be a nice meet up. Some alcoholic free mulled wine can be organised from my end so as not to have illegal side effects......

I recall we must refit water pump but that also needs time to cure so we can't do a test run on the day but we can attend to some other tasks.

Magda, back to you because my memory is a bit off:

Anything on brakes/brake pads? Fluid change? Pads?
Spline lube?
Radiator and fan? I recall something on the fan?.
Temperature sensor?
Fuel filter.
