Hi all, apologies if this has already been covered but couldn't find the answer. One of the first refurb jobs I want to do on my bike is to repaint the wheels. Are these simply sprayed silver or are they powder coated? The wheels are the 3 spoke items on a 4 valve bike.

Not sure how they were done in the factory but I got acceptable results using Hammerite Smooth Silver aerosols.
Would imagine powder coating would be the way to go given the time and money.

I have a pair of wheels at the powder coaters at present. One is a three spoke K1100RS front wheel and the other is a rear from a K1200RS. I have ground off the ugly casting rib in the centre of the wheel rims and have chosen a steel grey colour with a lacquer finish to preserve the shine.

I shall post some pictures when I get them back next week.

Mine got the PRO treatment, first at the metal polishers who stripped the rims completely and then to the Paint shop who did a 2 pack Bake.

I have no regrets except for the Dimwitted person who fitted the tyres and chipped the paint with the machine. Not sure if Powdercoating would hold up any better. It probably would. The paint was only a few weeks old when the tyres were put on

These have stood up really well, as one would expect from a pro panelbeating / paint shop

Price:75 for the strip and 280 for the paint. ouch but  . . .

a once in a lifetime job

So dare we ask who fitted the tyres up after the new paint..?  Took my wheels off my R11, an one at a time to the local shop, almost unmarked at this point, please can i have someone who knows the machine and how to on the job, I don't mind paying extra, i say, at which point said service manager gets shitty an says we will do our best, if thats not good enough you better go elsewhere...!!!
So i say go do your best, well they got there box of beer, and i got some new marks, along with my new rubber... Seems one cant win eh...

Yeah. I won't drop anyone in it. This town is too small for that. Suffice to say that if you know who has the best Tyre prices in town then it won't take much to figure out which crowd was responsible. I took the rim back and showed the w/shop manager - all he said was "well, it can't have been us because our machine don't reach that part of the wheel" . . .go figure

 YEP, Thats him hahaha... Nice guy, but....   The whole industry needs to lift its game in my mind, and at a $100 ish a hour so they bloody well should...

Hmm . . funny what happens when people get hold of certain dealerships. You know, like BMW ones. You would think that, with the new found prestige they would be wanting you to return.

I will, but only to purchase the tyres now. Then I will go across the road for the tyre fittings and wofs and oils, and go back to Experience BMW in Auckland for all the Gen. Beema parts. I don't like being shafted and I cannot stomach lack of integrity or accountability, especially when I pointed out to them that these rims were brand new

 Yea Im hearing you on all that dealer stuff, seems the she'll be rite mate attitude is well entrenched, sadly.  I been thinking about buying my own tyre machine, did work in the car tyre an racing world in a past life, the rite gear and attitude does wonders, also looking to do some bike stuff for others who cant or don't have the tools or aptitude, or want to pay a $100+ a hour to have the apprentice shag it up...

My 1983rims were very shabby. I cleaned them up with a sandblast then painted with a wheel silver rattle can.
Very happy with the results so far and at minimal cost (one rattle can did two wheels).

If you ever want a bare finish then vapour blasting is the way to go. It uses extremely fine beads which seal the surface and really slow down any future corrosion. I have two Guzzi engines in the garagae, one of which was vapour-blasted around eight years ago and the other around five years ago. I haven't done anything in particular to protect them since and both still look like they've just come out of the shop.
