Hi Folks,
I just replaced the gearbox oil and final drive oil with Redline HD Shockproof Gear Oil I had heard about using this and others success as well as people who had oil come out of the final drive breather when using it. I contacted Redline and asked for their recommendation of what oil to use in my gearbox and final drive the only criteria being what is best for the bike, cost is no object, they recommended the HD Shockproof oil.

Well I did it last night and boy what a difference to the gearbox, my bike has only 11,400 km on it and to be frank the BM gearbox is strong and reliable but changes are not quiet compared to the H bikes and even they are not brilliant. Well putting in the Redline has made the box so smooth it is like magic. I went for a 15 mile ride to see a pal, had coffee and came back, no leaks from the breather just smooth changing all the way!
Regards,
K-BIKE

Just a quicki question from England.
Is there European name for Redoil gearbox oil. I think this sounds a good first move towards easing the clunkey gear shifts, and it seems to come with the highest recomendations. The RS has 83,000 miles on the clock.
Re routed the new clutch cable from around the outside of the forks, and it seems a lot smoother, although I get the feeling that it is just the right length to fit my old RG. Do they make different lengths, RT and RS? It still seem very heavy. Any thoughts. I have been given some great advice already by another member.
Must dash, the dog needs to go down the park, and I need a small beer, Cheers
Huw (Boristhebike is now Betsiethebike...)

The European name is Redline Shockproof Gear oil
http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?categoryID=6&subCategoryID=16 (sorry could not resist that).

I have been doing a bit more research and as an ex Castrol laboratory person I can smell they use the same pungent extreme pressure additive in their oil as Castrol do (loyalty forbids me naming it) but also add to that the solid lubricant which gives the Redline product the opaque appearance. I recommend you read http://www.redlineoil.com/whitePaper/11.pdf which I found interesting.

Hi K-Bike,
Thanks for the help. The Chiswick outlet will be reciving a visit from me asap. The new (20 years old) RS that I have just got is a peach. My dream bike. I had a great run to Southampton yesterday evening on a work job. Cold on the way back (the first frosts of winter!) but a joy. Betsie (the Boris replacement) just flies. 90mph seems to be its optimum cruising speed, with lots of power still in hand. Solid as a rock and eating up the tarmac. I'm not so sure about its new name...a friend (another BMW owner) christened it one evening down the local rustic English boozer, and the name has stuck. 'Betsie'...I'll just have to get to like it, cause thats what called.
The clutch and gear change seems to be an issue. The first 5 miles its fine, not exactly slick (its a BMW) but precise and sharp. Then it just stiffens up. The clutch becomes HEAVY, still working but way way to heavy. The gearbox becomes 'jagged' and selection becomes an issue. Neutral becomes a right bugger to select, almost unobtainable, so you sit at lights with it in gear (NO!!) trying to select the liittle green light, jumping between 1st and 2nd, or even unable to lift it out of 1st. I think it is all clutch related, there lies the root if the problem. I will change the gear oil for REDLINE, and start to examine the internals of clutch. I hope it is just in need of TLC and grease. Any thoughts?
Thanks again for the help. Happy riding
Cheers, Huw

Hi Huw,
I would look at the oil level first using the tool. If that is OK change the oil. Just as a habit I always change every fluid and filter on every new bike as soon as I can to establish a datum of perfect from the start of ownership using the correct stuff. Don't rely on the dealer having used the correct stuff they sometimes use whatever is cheap. Next check the whole clutch cable length in case it is misrouted and is getting hot and frictionally stiff. Next the usual thing the "experts" throw out when balky shifts are talked about is spline lube when was that done? I am about to do mine since although the shifting is great I know that even with only 12,500 miles on the spline lube on my bike is 18 years old! Lastly look at the clutch actuator down by the bottom of the gear case as they are prone to rust at that point and a grease nipple fitment is often recommended
Regards,
K-BIKE
