You're welcome to become a member of the forum, and here you'll find almost everything K bike you need, but please first introduce yourself in the Member's Introduction section. Thank you.

Just am going to complete the sage myself.    Not only had a motor that would not prime, had the whole motor anti vibration rubber try to turn into good, and stain the petrol a dark brownish orange.    Apparently the 1984 antivibration rubber does not like either unleaded petrol.

Stripped down the system when I found voltage from starter relay going to fuel pump.  Once I had pump out I found the prefilter shredded and bits of rubber and goo directly in the intake of the pump.

Got a replacement kit from ebay, for 83 to 9x series K100, but after cleaning the fuel tank , I found that the replacement prefilter was not usable as it had an extra spigot on the side.  Got an old parts manual and found the old prefilter had the same description and part number as the new one when the bmw parts breakdown was consulted.  Contacted seller company of kit and they helpfully contacted the manufacturers of the new kit.   They were forwarded the image (with no spiggot) and embedded part number in image of the old manual.
They did not have a reference or manufacture the older prefilter.
This spigot when assembled blocks inserting the assembled pump in the assembly mount cutout.  Tossed up using a nibbler on the pump mount platform.  Would still need to block the spigot.

Cut off the spigot and feed channel with a razor saw, and glued 400 stainless steel mesh across the new hole.  Wish I had searched this forum better, as I would have probably replaced all the mesh with stainless steel 400.
I just have to hope the new plastic mesh is fuel resistant.

If you find a similar effect on your bike, you will probably have to replace the submersible fuel hose and post pump filter, and clean all of the rubber goo off the inside of your tank with acetone.  Wear gloves if you can.....

This is utter nonsense.  Unleaded fuel came out in the 70s and K bikes are engineered to run on unleaded fuel.

Maybe they were made after unleaded came out, but 44 years after its manufacture I have one that since I have had it has only seen the fuel pump immersed in 95 since.    So either the petrol or the occassional exposure to air has caused the rubber to go to goo.    I believe this is possible considering the MSDS type warnings about unleaded.   Used to wash everything in petrol (don't any more)  and stand upwind when I fill up as well.

It is the ethanol that is put in fuel since about 2001 that when it is left in the tank for extended lengths of time destroys the vibration damper.  The damper is designed for immersion in unleaded fuel and is pretty impervious to it.

Ethanol has done a lot of damage to fuel systems since it's introduction.  The problem comes from the byproducts of the bacteria and chemical reactions when the ethanol absorbs atmospheric moisture and then sits in the tank for extended lengths of time.
