How Could I Pass It Up? Bmw_k110In half an hour the dealership's van will drop off a red 1998 K1200RS with a likeness to the image above, with 57,117 miles, a full Remus zorst but no panniers, in my driveway. The owner walked away from it after not being able to cough up the $1,300 plus late fees for repairs. It has been sitting since March of '22, so needs battery and fuel drained, fluids changed, a Telelever seal. The tyres are good. It runs. It's #2 red K1200RS in my garage. I did not pay much for it.

How Could I Pass It Up? 20231099
With heavy frost the past coupla nights I was tucked into the garage. I charged and load tested the Westco battery that was installed two years ago, but since it sat for that time unaided, the best load voltage I could get was under 8V. None of the Odysseys I use for workshop batteries were up to snuff, so out to the drive with heavy duty cables to connect to the Ford Ranger - not running. She fired first go and settled into a steady idle on 20 month old untreated premium, now treated. The fans cycled on, and off, twice, after 17 minutes of idling.

I've aired up the tyres which had only dropped to 25 front and 29 rear, should be set to 36 front & 42 rear. They're 7 years old by the date stamp but have plenty of tread left.

The seat lock core is missing so I'll have to scrounge one and 'key' it to the ignition key - a fairly standard part number from Beemer.

There's spider droppings across the fairings that'll need cleaning. As mentioned earlier, both Telelever fork seals are leaking. I have a set in stock as they're bog standard from K12 bricks, & R11/1150 oilheads to hexhead R1200's.

One of the accessory handlebar risers is loose, with a hidden bolt beneath the riser, so it has to come off to tighten it. One turn signal stalk is broken clean, so either superglue or a new stem for that one.

It's got a non-functional HID lowbeam with a maze of wiring disconnected beneath the seat. I've a spare headlight assembly so that choice is obvious. All other lights function, including a pulsing brake light. The typcal ABS is dual flashing which indicates it should go out once underway - to be tested & verified on the road. The full Remus with mid-resonator sounds most loverly. Not loud, just a deeper rumble. I've a stock spare with catalyst if saving the planet comes to mind.

As an 8/97 prod date it's 616 builds away from my other K1200RS, which is a 3/97, but which has a hole in the block where #1 connecting rod & piston used to reside. The PO gave that bike to me four years ago and it has been an excellent spare part source.

This 'new' one's a tasty little piglet for $500 greenbacks in cash out the door.
