OK, Ill admit to being a little embarrassed to asking this question, but I feel sure Im amongst friends.

Im completely respraying my bike (or rather getting a bodyshop to respray it) and so have begun stripping everything down.

All went well apart from when I came to remove the mirror glasses from their pods. I tried a couple of the suggested methods of removal. First was the tapping it against onto towel trick as seen on ebay. Wouldnt budge. I then got a cheap handheld panel puller and that wouldnt shift them either, so I resorted to the Clymer manual which suggests prying them off with a suitable lever (of course masking the mirror pod to save the paint).

First one popped off no sweat and so Im left with a mirror complete with the ball joint on the back of the glass.

The other side didnt want to play to the same rules and so Im left with a mirror with a shaft that seems to push down into the ball joint which is still in the mirror pod. I cant test it to see if its securely in (because the bike is in pieces) but would I be right in assuming that I may need a new pod + glass for the second one?

i used a couple of cable ties to get my mirrors out of the pod ...about 300mm long when still straight ... fitted them loosly with lots of slack and as close to the ball joint as possible ....a screwdriver through the loop of both ties and a two pieces of 2x4 soft pine against the pod as the lever point ...one was longer than the other and was used lever the whole lot out of the pod after zipping the ties up tight

What have you got at the back of your mirror glass?

Is the ball joint attached to the back of the glass, or is it in the mirror pod?

hi bonzo ...i had a plastic socket at the back of the glass...the ball part was built into the pod ....aluminium ball with locating lugs mounted on a fairly sustantial diecast bracket,,,mine is an rt by the way
