Hi all,

While i have a spot of free time on my hands i am going to strip down and clean the starter motor and alternator, started motor is easy enough... but the Alternator has got a 22mm nut secured to a shaft with an allen head end... whats the best way to get it off?

Is it to hold the rotating cap in a vice and then use plenty of strngth on the nut?!

Put the allen key in the vise and the shaft on that and use a ring spanner on the nut. If you grab the drive in a vise hard enough to undo the nut you will shag the drive coupler.
You will need a puller to get the bearings of the shaft they can be very tight.

Use a battery powered impact driver to undo the nut. Quick and it will be much better than by hand. It's neigh on impossible to get enough grip on the coupling to prevent it from rotating under torque when using hand tools.
