working on fixing the fuel gauge i found the 4 pin roundish plug behind and below the rear of the fuel tank if i give it a wriggle the gauge works are all four wires for the gauge or something different and can it be replaced by something i can buy at an auto shop etc

There are a couple of posts about this subject on here, so a search will help.

Short answer, yes there are four-pin connectors (flat compared to the original round shape) that will do the job.

Is there a Jaycar shop up there? I think they sell what you're after.

Poor contact at this connector (and there will be others), is a common problem. Unless the connector is mechanically broken, the contact problem can be cured by treating with a product called Deoxit. There is a ton of information about it on this forum if you do a search for it. It will be a good investment.

Try DeoxIT first as g35 suggested. Available at Jaycar as well. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, use this stuff on every electrical connection on your bike (earths, bulbs, relays, switches, connectors etc).

after cleaning the socket part , you may find that squeezing the cylinder parts of the socket ,( so they have a smaller diameter ) will help enormously ....found my issue 30,000 k s ago and been good ever since .

The most common reason to that owners finds out that they got a problem with this connector, is when the fuel pump stops to work.

White: warning lamp signal (ground) ...when empty.
Yellow: level gauge signal (variable ground).
Green/white: fuel pump power supply.
Brown: ground.

Thanks all,exactly what i wanted I tried squeezing etc.cleaning with another contact cleaner,all i managed to do was stop the fuel pump from working thats why i asked what the four wires were for,guess its a trip to Jaycar for me.thanks again

Nice job on the soldering but here is a tip....
When I do this type of job, even if I use heat shrink, I will cut all the wires at different lengths and stagger the solderings. This way, if the heat shrink get damaged I avoid the chances to get 2 connections touching each others. When all the wires are soldered together, I make kind of a harness with a bigger heat shrink (or electrical tape)
Here is an example on how I solder a double wire. (more wires, more staggering)
