Please all, I am not being presumptuious. But rather I am begging for comments and observations. You all know that I have been searching nationwide for other Ks and that I have been driving my wife nuts with my 1985 K100rs that I have yet to ride. I also am so entirely impressed by the quality of this forum and value the combined quality of knowledge that you all so unselfishly share. (Anyone who visits Chicago please look me up). Peggy (my lovely wife:)) is going to have her own K. She is going to give it a go. I pick the bike up next week only 1100 miles to Texas. She gets her permit. Takes some lessons (not from me), on a smaller 250cc unit. She gets her Motorcycle liscense e voila!



Well, I found this not running K75 with under 9k Miles and snapped it up for mama. It had been running one month ago and was parked while the owner was traveling out of Ft Hood TX, USA. in the military.

Owner came back and it didn't run. I will find out more symptoms later. But I doubt is is too much. Here are some photos. I appreciate all comments and observations.

Jim,

You have a K75S there and it looks like an earlier model with the square rear master cylinder and alloy coloured drivetrain and footrest hangers. It does not have the bellypan, which I think may have been referred to as the K75S Special in the US. Unsure of the year the S first arrived in the US, 1988 perhaps?

For me, the first item would be to replace the rear brake reservoir. Easy to purchase. Easy to change.

Replace the missing covers and it'll look really sharp!

I believe that the owner removed covers so that it would show the engine. But will check it out

Here you can buy a alternator cover for 5 bucks.
You find it under "engine & engine electrical".

If it was running and now is not, I would be looking at the fuel pump wiring first off. Check and make sure the connection to the pump under the tank on the left side (at least it was in that position on my '85's) is good and tight. Then I would be going after the computer connections. I'll bet it's something easy! It looks really nice. Only 9K miles?

sounds too good. It'll be something simple. Just allow the missus plenty of time to get used to how they handle, always feels really heavy to start with. (and as you get older).

this is what I was thinking. After reading for hours my courage grows and grows, that the problem is just a simple connection or part.



Actually a little more than 9k. I 'm enjoying K armic K nowlege K ollection and K ontribution.

The history on this bike. Young Military Gung Ho gets the bike from his wealthy uncle in California who never really rode her too much. The Kadet put only 1500 miles on her but, after he did some fuel system cleaning and got his bill from BMW, and then while he was away for month of training she wouldn't start he gave up on the project. Then on his meager military stipend prefered to sell her "as is", take the USDs, than to try to pay BMW again to fix her up.

As many of you may have noticed I enjoy searching the thousands of Craigslist markets for parts, bikes and apparrel, and sharing with this forum, but in a selfish moment, I couldn't bring my self to share this bike. I promise that I am done buying K bikes for the near future and will (unless directed otherwise by the secret forum sages) resume my posting services for used merchandise in the North American Market.

More observations about the K75 are welcome! Thanks to everyone.

What a beauty! Good Luck, I'm sure a little gentle fettling will see a superb bike that will last for many years.
I admit I am tempted to get a K75 to add to the stable!

In Oz the S came out in 1987 so perhaps that is also the case for the usa. It sure looks sweet and they do go great so trouble shoot the nonstart issue and then go for a ride on it, you're mamma will be pleased when its her turn for sure

Your wife will be very happy with the K75. It's way lighter than the k100 and smoothhhh.
If the bike doesn't start, I would first check the plug on the EFI computer.

I still have my K75, but haven't used it a lot lately. I have too many toys

is that old square brake resevoir known to be bad? Or just ugly? What makes it replaceable?

I believe that as it sits where it does (the later bikes have them tucked-in further out of the way), it takes a beating from the sun. After time, the plastic degrades and it may leak.

My experience with the rear master is as soon as you want to remove it for some sort of maintenance (and you will), it will crack at the bottom where the small spout is, just when you don't want it to.
Well worth replacing at your first opportunity.

A nice new one fitted will set you back about $400 or if you are Tackler buy a bike with all the new bits fitted....and it makes it 1000 KM's home without a murmur.By the way Tio...your missus has a beautiful bike....I would love that.

I can confirm that the reservoir does get extremely brittle with prolonged exposure to the sun. My son of three was sitting on my K100RT this past summer and kicking his feet wildly. He hit the reservoir and it shattered like glass, spilling brake fluid everywhere. I replaced the reservoir with a second-hand $10 one originally made for a Yamaha sport bike. It's one of those tiny round ones; the fluid capacity doesn't affect the back brake from performing its job. In this picture, you can just pick out the reservoir on the left side of the photo where I initially mounted it in place of the OEM reservoir.

I later relocated it up behind the battery cover using the OEM hose. Protected in this way, it i unlikely that the reservoir will yellow and become brittle, nor will it be accessible for a three year old to kick.

Yammy reservoir = Lower price, greater flexibility, immediate local availability, and equal function over BMW OEM. It was just a better option for me, but it might not be for everyone.

Rob, I was thinking of Klompy's $400..........perhaps he was refering to the master cylinder not just the res.
