I've been active here for a couple of years, and I guess I never filed an intro greeting.  At least the forum is bugging me to post one in RED LETTERS ... so here goes:

From 1981-1986 I was Technical Editor for Road Rider magazine, and Cycle News here in the USA.  What a job... ride motorcycles, and get paid for it!

In September 1983, BMW flew me to Germany for the World Press Introduction of the K-100, and I was one of the mag editors to ride the very first bikes shown to the press.  I still vividly remember that morning, blasting along the French Riviera at whimsical speeds on the first production bikes.  BMW did the same for me in summer of 1985 with the introduction of the K75, and I spent 3 weeks riding one all over eastern Europe.

So now that I have more time to ride, I've found a 1985 K-100 RT, and have found this forum a great resource for keeping it on the road.  Most recent change was installing a set of Pirelli Sport Demons.  They're awesome, and highly recommended.  Later this week, I'm pulling the gas tank and adding headlight relays, and adding some insulation to the fuel lines.

Thanks to all for contributing to this forum.  It's a great resource!

Jim, did you put the radials on the snowflake wheels or the three spoke wheels?

I have heard great things about radials, but have been afraid to mount them on snowflake wheels as most reports you can't?

Next time, try radial tires on a K.  You won't regret it. Yes, you can mount them on Y-spokes.

Pirelli Sport Demons are bias ply tyres. Truck Duck's recommended Avon/Bridgestone combo... Link: https://www.k100-forum.com/t7150-radial-tires-on-y-spoke-wheels

As mentioned elsewhere here, the Sport Demons are bias ply tires.  But with a modern design, they're way better than anything available when the bike was designed and made in 1985.

Hi Jim

Well done for finally introducing yourself. That was quite an enviable introduction to K bikes you had - the stuff dreams are made of. It must have been an incredible experience riding one of the first production bikes and it's all the more amazing that these bikes still continue to perform as well as their more recent counterparts.

Enjoy the ride.
