I have noticed that on start up after being on the side stand overnight or for a few hours the bike will smoke on start up .It doesn't smoke if parked on the center stand or while being used and so far hasn't used any oil.Is this normal for these ?

I've read it's normal for early K100 models. No harm. Repels insects.

Making a right side kick stand would solve this problem.  It's too bad there aren't enough early K's on the road to make this profitable for someone.  I'd buy in a heart beat.

Yeah, I'd buy that!!

I find that if I tilt the bike to the right for a good 30 seconds after turning it off that prevents the amount of smoking on my '83 RS. Should just get my centre stand sorted, but that's petrol money!!!

A too-common issue on early K75 & K100 models, which pinned oil control rings - circa 1987 - mostly 'solved', but it'll still occur on newer model years if left on the sidestand for long.

Mystery solved ! Thanks so now I won't worry,I'll just think of it as acting like one of my 2 strokes. I ran her today on the high way for the first time.Did around 75 miles at speeds around 70mph and she's running GREAT ! I'm loving it more and more every day

If you really want to make it smoke on startup... get it good and hot, then park facing uphill on a good steep slope. I nearly made Carlingford disappear from view doing that... Twisted Evil

It's very common and just ignore it and if anybody asks just deny it and say BMWs don't do that. Laughing

Mine did that lots when I first got it but then I realised the previous owner had topped up the engine oil to the very top of the sight glass "just to be sure" ! With oil level at the mid point it scares onlookers far less.
