Hi all, any issues fitting an K100RS fairing to a naked K100?
I have a spare one ready to fit. Cheers, Dave.

Shouldn't be as long as you've got all the mountings and bits.

You will likely need to drill and tap 4 bolt holes in the head tube to mount the bracket that the fairing bolts to.
I have an bare RS frame in the back yard.  When I get a chance today I will take some measurements/photos for you if that will help.

Cheers.

Dave

I have an idea the holes will be there, but plugged with plastic plugs to seal them.

Al,  I just checked my Naked 85 and the holes are there with little plugs just as you say.  I am surprised with all of the work I have been doing on that bike that I never noticed them before.

Cheers.

Dave.

I would like to add that models with factory fitted fairings have rubber bushings
in the front engine/frame mountings.

Models w/o a fairing have a rigid front engine/frame mountings, it's said that to
much stress is put to the frame if these ones is equipped with a heavy fairing.

You will also find the four mount points on the front of the frame (two on each side that take those square bolt heads) will not be there.
Already tried on my naked K.
Frame angles will make it difficult to fit the fairing. I tried hose clamps. Then I gave up.

Odd. Mine's a Nov.'83 naked K100 but all the required brackets to mount the RS fairing were on the frame. No rubber bushings on the front engine mounts through.

Thanks for all the replies. I did read that fitting the RS fairing to the naked K would possibly
place greater strain on the frame and may lead to cracks, which is why I asked.
Rossko- Haven't noticed the lugs on the frame legs. I'll go and have a look.
Looks like I may have a spare RS fairing if that's the case.
Thanks again everyone, Dave.

I have great difficulty in believing that story about the fairing cracking the frame. The K frame wall thickness isn't quite as heavy as my Guzzi frames but it's far thicker than the equivalent Japanese frames and they mostly carry mostly solidly mounted fairings. Additionally, the RS fairing is rubber-mounted in itself: four bushes on the front spider, two on the frame legs and two on the engine. If all you are missing are the four cages for the captive nuts on the frame legs, I'd make them and get someone else to mig/tig them on (unless you can do it yourself!).

You may find it difficult to believe so I suggest you go argue it with BMW as they are the ones who make the claim.

Rick: I'm probably completely wrong on this one but after almost thirty years of building motorcycles (and twenty-odd years of building/modifying frames, none of which have failed), I smell a rogue insurance claim followed by BMW quite rightly covering themselves against the same thing happening again.

I would really like to know where that claim originated from but I guess that's never going to happen.

I just checked the part # of both frames, and they are different.
I don't have any idea what is the difference, but I am like Dai and cannot imagine that the structure of both frames differs.

I've no expert knowledge on the subject but would like to put forward an alternative theory that may fit.
Looking at the diagrams and part lists on Max BMW Motorcycles, I notice that they use the same diagram for the naked and faired bikes showing the rubber bush but don't actually list the bush in the parts list for the naked.
Could it be that the very first K's, the nakeds, used the frame without the bush.
When the faired bikes where launched it coincided with a change of frame after 4/85. A precaution against vibration or did some of the very first faired bikes experience vibration issues?
The other aspect is, were the rubber bushes to prevent frame fracturing or simply to prevent vibration damage to the fairings? 😕

The first K100 didn't have a rubber bush and that design continued through to the end of production of the K100.
However the RS and RT/LT frames had the rubber bush in the front mountings. If they were there from the start of production of the faired models or were put there after BMW found cracks I don't know but BMW say that the rubber mounts were put there to prevent cracking. It may have been a precautionary step, I don't know. BMW do, as we all know, some "strange" things but there is usually a sound reason for them if you can find it.
Whether the fairing is mounted on rubber bushes probably would not be of any importance to the frame cracking as it would more than likely be the weight hanging from the front of the frame that makes a difference.
I would say that the even weight has little or no bearing because the K75RT does not have the rubber bushes and has the K100RT fairing.

Hi again, checked the frame on the naked K and it does have the four lugs on the down tubes (2 each side) sitting behind the bodywork. Not sure about the rubber mounts.
Can't remember what year the naked K is, think its '84.
Anyway, I'm going to put the RS fairing on it and see how it goes.
Then, I've got an R100 RS fairing to go onto the KRS in the fashion of the Ongar
conversion. If anyone here has done one of these themselves, perhaps they could
get in touch? Cheers all, Dave.
